Names of Tools
Sometimes in the pits we yell out for tools we need. Some of these tools have their own name.
So far we have: Stanley = Dead blow hammer:D Alfonso = Big pop rivet gun:confused: and Bill = Small pop rivet gun:eek: I was sondering what some of the other teams call their tools and what they actually are. |
Re: Names of Tools
The only nickname I have for a tool on 1675 is the Maraca (dead blow hammer)

Re: Names of Tools
The hacksaw is named Sal, the wire stripper is called Shanaynay and the crimper is named Sheniqua. Sheniqua is the older sister of Shanaynay. Also...our angle grinder is named Big Red(it's big and it's red...and dangerous). Friedchickenisha is the jigsaw and our mini hacksaw it's called Ralph.

Re: Names of Tools
449 has a long history naming laptops/printers/most non-robot electronics. We have a laptop named Leo, Elephantine, Asus of Spades, etc. We also have a printer named George, and a vacuum named Louis.
We also have a ball-peen hammer named 'Big Pappy' and a lockjaw plier named 'Da boom boom' Don't know where it started, but calling the tools by the names we give them is more fun than saying, bring us laptop #2. |

Of course, there was also that bizarre tool which no one could identify which saw much (improvised) use in fixing the 2008 AndyMark mecanum wheels (anyone here remember those? Oh boy...), which eventually became known only as "the fix-y thingy." |

Re: Names of Tools
The only tool in our cart that has a name is the 2 lb sledge "Doomhammer." In 2009 we were packing up from a demo and in cleaning up we found what we guessed to be another teams packing list, "Doomhammer" was at the top of the page and a student happened to be putting the sledge away so the name stuck.
At the regional this year one our mechanical students was helping to get a rookie robot through inspection and he said "be right back, need to get the Sawzall and the Doomhammer from our pit to finish this," the look on the faces of the rookie team members were priceless. |
Re: Names of Tools
Also, while it's not a tool, we do have the "BFC" (pretty sure people here are smart enough to figure that one out) in the back room for which we have never found a use. I believe it was originally purchased back in 2008 to actuate an arm that never went on the robot (it was supplanted by a far-superior scissor lift).

Re: Names of Tools
Our Harbor Freight MultiMeter is the "One Time Use" or the "Well, There's Something Detector"
Our Hammer is the "Persuader" We also have several "Special Tools" including a T-Handle with some 3/8 threaded rod on a block, though nobody is sure what it is for, and a bent flat-head screwdriver for the WAGO connectors on the PD board Oh, and my personal favorite, we have the "Big Wrench/Big Screwdriver" for anything bigger than reasonable. |
Re: Names of Tools

Re: Names of Tools
oooo, I've got a couple.
Auto Body Hammer: Baby Old Deadblow Hammer: The Persuader New Deadblow Hammer: The Alternate Persuader 18 inch Crescent Wrench: Bertha (always said in a manly voice, must be carried over the shoulder). Old tool box filled with random stuff: Miscellaneous Crap Box (you can find one of everything in here! :D ) Old computer in the corner: NDOL (Not Deserving Of Love). Old CAD Laptop: The Craptop Harbor Freight: Horror Fright (Or Nathanmart) Tool box next to the mill: Kyle's box of magical wonders! (shortened to Kyle's Box). Our pit is now called "The Purple Fortress" after we overheard another team refer to it that way. Naturally there are many more that would be... untasteful to share on a public forum :P |
Re: Names of Tools
May team 587 ever sort through a problem without at least once mentioning the great and powerful 'Mallet of loving correction' ;)

Re: Names of Tools
I forgot that computers are tools.
We named our first Classmate "The Baby". The netbook that replaced it was "Lil' Sis". Our new driver station laptop is "Big Sis". Our very old seldomly used programming laptops are now dubbed "The Craptops", with their overstuffed bag that's been tearing for 6ish years dubbed "The Craptop Bag". |

Re: Names of Tools
Some of our alumni started the tradition of naming (and labelling) all of Dawgma's machine tools (and some other tools). I don't remember most of the names off hand, other than the vacuum cleaners' (which get used the most).
The large shop vac is named Willard, and the portable one is Bill. |

Re: Names of Tools
The most popular tool in our box is a long phillips screwdriver named "Big Red."
On a related subject, I'll bet some other teams have named all of their batteries like we have (it is a practice we picked up from 1625 Winnovation.) We actually become very familiar with each battery by name, and remember which ones won important matches, which ones are a little weaker than others, etc. Our current roster of competition batteries: Franklin Neil Mackenzie Freebie Oprah Michael Gary Sandbag Darwin Pedro Plus two batteries reserved for alliance partners: Tonto and Wattson. |
Re: Names of Tools
Our team likes to refer to those little ClassMate laptops as 'JankMates'.
