Introducing - MidKnight Mayhem!

Hello, teams!

Looking for some more Ultimate Ascent now that the Championship is over?!

…Well, what are you doing June 29th?

Join Team 1923: The MidKnight Inventors at their inaugural off-season event: MIDKNIGHT MAYHEM!

Where:
West Windsor-Plainsboro HS North
90 Grovers Mill Rd
Plainsboro, NJ 08550

When:
Saturday, June 29th, 2013

Why:
Because you want to rock another round of Ultimate Ascent!

Our event website will be going up soon, but to register your team please fill out the following google doc link.
The cost will be $200 per team, and we’ll be contacting teams that register with info on payment shortly.

I don't know if Team 223 will be able to compete yet, but I can guarantee at least one flame-panted* volunteer!

*but probably not because those things are miserable to wear in the summer

sounds like a lot of fun, we are in a bind right now with funding and the school but will keep it in mind, and share with other local teams.

I'm mad that it took me a bit to get that.

2495 may or may not be attending, depending if we get off the waitlist for monty. Regardless, I'll be there volunteering if we don't make it (and possibly a big chunk of my team)

If you're NOT making a joke on our traditional cheer...

..we'll get back to you on that.

We're looking at following a pretty traditional off-season agenda, so probably 8:30 - but weirdly enough it's not something our committee never talked about! So when we all chat about it I will update it :) and of course, the agenda will be on the website launching soon.

It should be at midnight with blacklights and glow in the dark Frisbees like those late night bowling parties.
Now THAT would be unique!

Darn, Brandon still hasn't instituted that 'like' button on CD!

I'm sure a few Pi-oneers would love to come down!

Thanks! If you're volunteering please be sure to sign up on the form.

Thanks for your support, all - and tell any teams you might be friends with - I know it's a hard time of year to be keeping up with CD, but we definitely want to get the word out.

This event is truly a dream come true for Katie and I - a few short months after we founded 1923, we were in gym class together and realized our school had a PERFECT layout for an event. Now that we've finally got the resources together and the support from the school, we are SO ready to make this a great off-season for everyone. We know it's short(ish) notice, but early summer events seem to be in high demand, since Monty's on a waitlist already.

If you think you're not local enough to make it happen, please know that since we do already have out-of-state interest (thanks 340!), we'll be working on getting hotel deals for teams and/or volunteers if they want to come from far away. FIRST is a community, and we've been so fortunate to have friends from all over the country and world - it'd be a shame if we couldn't invite them to our party!

We're so looking forward to this, and I hope we'll see you there!

Officially on the form we have 4, but we have several other teams who emailed the midknightmayhem@gmail.com account who have been directed to fill it out.

In barely 12 hours since announcing it, we've got 9 teams already. Pretty sweet if you ask me!

Libby,

Please let me know if you do end up with something for hotels. I definitely want to come down and volunteer, but I would probably be driving down Friday night and leaving Sunday morning. It would be far too long of a day to do a one day road trip.

Will do, Jon! That's on the to-do list for today.

We are currently at 12 teams officially registered, with a few more interested, but waiting to make a decision.

And we've got quite a few volunteers already but could use some more! Be sure to register if you'll be around. :)

Thanks a million!

Considering I might be in the area visiting family and taking a break from the good ole' south. I might have to drop by and volunteer. I'll be more sure of that later this week.

We're working on organizing 1923's students into volunteer groups and such first, so all I can say is "Soon".

If you volunteer, we're more than likely going to use you, so don't make other plans for June 29th yet! :)

I heard some rumors that the TCNJ district will be going away next year; are you hoping to host a district next year? That would be great.

As far as I'm aware MAR has already found a replacement for TCNJ, but it's something I wouldn't mind thinking about! We have not been approached about that, though.

Anyone know how full this is currently? 1640 is interested, but we're wondering how much longer we have to scramble a summer crew together.

What's the pre-rookie policy?

I'm sure Libby or Katie will chime in with information about MidKnight Mayhem's pre-rookie policy.

I think I've said this a million times by now, but this literally is a dream come true - for me, for the committee, and for the team. Thank you all so much for helping us making this happen, and so quickly! The FIRST community is an awesome thing. We decided to make this a 'real thing' the first week in April, and this has all come together so fast. It's been crazy, but crazy in a good way. I'm so looking forward to the 29th and all the Mayhem it will bring. :)

What are the mentor matches going to look like? Is it going to be 1923's practice robot driven by a different mentor drive team each time or a specific set of matches right before lunch where mentors drive their team's robot in a match against other mentors?

aboppana 10-06-2013 18:23

Re: Introducing - MidKnight Mayhem!

Joe,

I believe we are going to start a new qualification schedule with the matches during lunch time after we are finished with the original qualification schedule and alliance selections. Then, each team will enter an all-mentor drive team to drive their robot during this new schedule for a match. After we go through a round of the mentor matches, we will resume the original schedule with the elimination matches. This way, mentor matches won't affect your qualification score, no matter how good or bad the mentors might be at driving :]

Hi Joe,

Abhishektha nailed it. We're doing sign-ups in the morning when teams arrive, for the mentor-matches where YOUR team will field YOUR robot... with a grown-up drive team. It'll be before elims, and we won't insert them into the qual schedule either- these will be their own independent matches. We definitely don't want mentor matches to affect the team's rank. Once we know who's signed up, we'll be able to generate a more specific schedule.

Team 316, the LuNaTeCs, is totally pumped to be coming to introduce mayhem to your field. We will be bringing our Archimedes drive team but will be rotating through all our students for at least qualifiers. Also we have just switched from C++ to JAVA so you are giving us a much needed opportunity to check out our new code. Thanks!!

We are also pumped about seeing how the mentor matches go - depending on how it looks we might suggest doing it for the Duel on the Delaware - I love the concept!

Looking forward to playing with/against some good competitors - mort, test, nemesis, sabotage, tech fire and the girlscouts among others- see ya there! We gonna be Loooooney!

Can we get some idea on how many qualification matches to expect?

Also what are the alliance selection rules going to be like, is this going to be an event where you aren't allowed to pick teams inside the top 8?

So excited for more robotics, think I've been going through withdrawal. Midknight in 5 days!!!

Libby K 24-06-2013 23:09

Re: Introducing - MidKnight Mayhem!

We've been speaking with our FTA's today, and looks like 5 qualifications per team. (We've had some teams drop so we are down to 31 - will update the teamlist when those drops are finalized.)

Plain ol' regulation alliance selections. 1-8, 8-1 - you can pick within the top 8, but if you decline someone, you can't accept someone else's invite. You all know the drill by now. :)

We're all SO EXCITED for this! See you all on Saturday.
(or Friday if you're one of our lovely setup volunteers/loading in for your team!)

Congrats to 225/869/369. Well deserved and a well fought finals set.

Many thanks to 1640 and 2495 for fighting it out with us, we had a lot of fun with you guys! Thanks to 1923 for hosting such a well run event.

Excellent event everyone! Thanks for hosting. My team had a great time and I enjoyed getting blocked by powercord during the mentor matches. Go fanbot! See you in the fall everyone.

316 had some problems (can anyone elaborate?) during the semifinals, so the alliance called in a backup bot. 869 was the only team left that didn't pack up, so they became the backup bot.

This event was great; the elimination matches were exciting. I especially enjoyed it when 869 pushed 225 back up after they fell over during the final match.

To the four backup teams that up and left: 869 has your championship trophy.
Never leave an event early. You never know what opportunities lie around the corner.

In QF1 the hub of the window motor that adjusts 316's shooter angle slipped off the shaft. We helped them rig something to keep the hub on.

In QF2 the fix for their shooter worked, but one of their drive wheels broke. There wasn't enough time to get a new one on for QF3, so we had to call a backup.

I'd also like to thank our all alliance partners and 1923 for hosting the event!

Many congratulations to 225, 369, 869 and 316! What an awesome show. You always teach us a lot, though I can honestly say I prefer the same side of the glass!

But moreover, to the MM Board and 1923: Wow. No, seriously, wow. That was quite literally the best rookie off-season I've ever had the pleasure of attending. I hope it went well for you, because a lot of people will miss this if it doesn't come back next year!

And of course, thank you to 11 and 2495 for a great run to finals! We've been wanting to play with MORT for quite a while now, but I have to say the experience still exceeded my expectations (which I admit were rather high--your reputation precedes you). You're great alliance captain. And thanks again to 2495 for joining us and bringing some impressive defense to bear on some very tough matches. Well done, guys!

The MidKnight Mayhem Committee and Team 1923 did a fantastic job with this event. One could hardly tell it was a first year event it ran so smoothly.

Big thanks to Team 225 for picking us despite the problems we were having earlier on in the day. It was great to finally be playing on the same side as you guys, even if only for two quarterfinal matches.

Thank you also to Team 369 and our backup Team 869. You guys did an outstanding job, and it was a pleasure getting to work with you while we were out there.

Again, great job to all involved with this competition. I hope to see MidKnight Mayhem return in years to come!

Great event, MKM planning committee!

It was great for me to see 11, 1640, and 2495 on the same alliance. Fun and exciting trip to the Finals!

Congrats 225 and company on the win! Great to finally meet the mentors of 225.

I sincerely hope teams do not drop out of the event next year or decide to leave early. The method of selecting backup robots MKM had to resort to was odd, but oh well. Hopefully more teams sign up next year!

PS - Thanks for having all the puppies walking around :D

Thanks to our alliance partners 1640 & 2495, it was a pleasure playing with you guys! 1640, it was awesome to finally play with you, you have a great program and look forward to playing with you again in the future! 869, you guys did an awesome job stepping in, wish we could have pulled it off with you at the Bridgewater District event back in April! Keep up the great work!

Thanks! Our drive team for the past two seasons is itching to get their hands back on the controls after letting our next-year's drive team compete at these past two offseason events!

Thanks to all teams for again giving our new drive team some great practice before they experience the real thing next season. Congrats to the winning and finalist alliances, the finals were some awesome matches to watch. Thanks again to 1228 for picking us, and to 1089 for finishing off our alliance. And of course thanks to everyone for tolerating our alliance-selection antics again ;) .

Libby, Katie, Kelsey, 1923, and everyone else involved in planning MKM: amazing job. 1676 had a blast, and if I didn't know, I would have never guessed this was the event's first year. The mentor matches were fun, the frisbee-catching dogs were cool, and man do I wish I got one of those awesome clock awards! Now that I am going to college next year, maybe I'll get to volunteer at next year's MidKnight Mayhem competition.

We (well I guess I should say the Pascack Pi-oneers, now that I've graduated ) have recorded all of the qualification, mentor, and elimination matches, as well as the alliance selections and award ceremony, and they are now posted on Team 1676's YouTube Channel here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...v14-iN-sggE1cm!

Can't wait to see some of you next month at IRI, and later this fall when I volunteer at Duel on the Delaware! :D

Just a short note to thank 1923 and the MKM team for such a classy event. As others have said, it felt like a 7th year event, not the first ever. It is very obvious just how muh work and planning when into this, it really showed.

I can't speak for the tem (that's Ryan's job) but I really had a great time. Great competition, nice venue, surprisingly good food (I had the Indian food, awesome) and lots of spirit.

My only complaint was the faucets in the men's room: One was scalding hot (and no cold), the other shut off as soon as it was released. But there are worse things in life...

Forgot to mention that; the venue really was nice. JB from 1403 and I were actually pointing out that it would be a great school for a district event sometime in the future. Lots of space and great seating.

Thanks to 1923 for hosting a great inaugural event. Everything ran super smoothly--it ran like 'clockwork' like a MAR district event.

Thanks to our alliance partners 316, 369, and 869. There was no way we could have done as well as we did without each of these teams.

We were very surprised that we got 869 as our backup (we turned in the replacement coupon not knowing all the replacement teams had left, last I had heard one was still there). They played the best defense I have ever seen, easily switching roles between blocking cycler shots and being our FCS fullback. They also righted us after we half-tipped against the wall during F2. Mad props to them.

I dunno, I don't think one set of bleachers would accomodate 40 teams worth of students and spectators.

The seating desired for a MAR district event is around 1200, I believe. I am unsure what the bleacher seating capacity is for the gym, but they had around 16/17 rows. Fire code vs. reality, probably 700 max, if teams leave their stuff in their pit and allow every seat to be taken with a body not a scouting box. Trust me, the first thing I did when I walked into their school and saw the amazing layout was count the seats in their gym. If we could knock down the other wall and put up an identical set of bleachers on the other side it would be great. At a 36 team event, and you assume 30 bodies per team, that is 1080. Some have less, some have WAY More!

Realize that at Bridgewater and Mt. Olive there are bleachers the same size on both sides of the field, and they are pretty full. Clifton has the same size bleachers on both sides of the field as well. Hatsboro has the extra balcony. I have not had the pleasure of attending events at the other two venues but I hear Lenape has plenty of bleacher space. TCNJ needed double sided rented bleachers at a huge cost. Seating was still tight there.

Agreed. It was 17 rows including the very top - I also counted. Other than that, great venue in a convenient location.

First of all, THANK YOU. We worked really hard to make sure this was a smooth, seamless event for our teams and volunteers, and I'm glad that you guys had that impression. We are definitely planning on MKM for next year, on top of our discussions with MAR regarding a district. Our committee was full of rockstar volunteers and mentors, and I'm so happy to have been able to work with them.

1) Yeah - I got a lot of questions about this. ALL of our backups left. As Ed said, guys, don't do that - you never know what kind of opportunities you'll get. After that momentary panic, I spoke with our FTAs and we made the decision to go through the already-eliminated teams that were still there, in seeding order. That was 869 - and congrats to them on that luck.

2) We'll make sure the puppies come back too! AIR, Attitudes In Reverse, is one of the community groups we invited to showcase at our event - also DiscDogs and a few local restaurants - and we thought they were a wonderful addition to the day.

It's on the table, for sure.

As far as seating goes, those bleachers seat 1100 (That's the # from our school facilities dept.) - and we did not pull out the side sets of bleachers which we could absolutely do for a district without blocking the event flow.

We're also looking at our other district high school (WWP South) which has newer athletic facilities, including DOUBLE the bleacher space in the gym - so in the most likely case, a West Windsor-Plainsboro district event would be at one school, with our off-season at the other.

---

As I said during the opening ceremonies - MidKnight Mayhem was absolutely a dream come true for us. Thank you to all of the teams that came, all of our volunteers, our vendors - AIR, DiscDogs, all of our local restaurants, and of course our rockin' DJ, Soundscape Entertainment (no, seriously, use them for any event you might be hosting) - every single person in that building this weekend made our event so wonderful, and we can't wait for next year already.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. WE DID IT!

Yep, we'll make sure that gets put up soon. I know our editors were going to clean it up a little (they did all the shooting AND editing that morning - all robot footage was from MKM) and we'll make sure to link it here when it's up. :)

We were all very impressed and excited to see the video. It was quite a surprise and it is always fun to hear teams cheer when they see themselves on the screen. It was a great idea and I would love to have it implemented at the district events. We would have to have a dedicated videographer, but I am sure from our alumni that we could find someone that would tape on Saturday and Show on Sunday before alliance selection. Something like this:

.....just in case you don't know who you are picking, here is a recap of all of the teams.....
