Summer Book Club

Hi all -

I was curious if anyone (Mentor or Student) would be interested in participating in a book club if it was held this summer. We would explore topics such as leadership, team motivation, team organization. . . anything that we as a group could think of. We would meet once a week in the evening over a Google hangout. Let me know.

Mentor/Coach/Teacher here.

Is Evening the only time that would be available?

Consider me interested.

Very cool. I'd read along, even if I couldn't always participate live.

Oh, mentor.

Norm -

I wouldn't mind hosting two meetups a week - one in the evening and one during the day. Gotta love summer for teachers :-)

Definitely interested.

What's your idea for format?
What books do you have in mind?

I'd be interested.

Re: Summer Book Club

I'm excited by the early interest. I'd love to take some suggestions on books.

So far I was thinking of Tribal Leadership by Dave Logan, John King, and Halee Fischer-Wright and Influencer by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, David Maxfield, Ron McMillan, Al Switzler as good Leadership Training books.

I have others I can suggest but I'd rather see what everyone here would like to read.

As to the format - I'll get back to you in a few. I want to find the best format to use when hosting this asynchronously and synchronously.

I wanted to reread Tribal Leadership this summer anyway!
This one is also on my list: http://www.abundancethebook.com/

Really, I am up for anything though.

Just thinking we might get some others that might not want to give up an evening.

I am fan of Patrick Lencioni.

I would (have) highly recommended Tribal Leadership.

I am halfway through Abundance. It is pretty good so far, but likely less applicable/useful to FRC.

Influencer is another really powerful leadership book.

I would be interested in a forum based discussion, though less likely for a live discussion (timing always seems off).

Seconded. Or perhaps a forum based and then more of an optional live discussion type thing?

Re: Summer Book Club

My thoughts are that we have both a discussion forum based club as well as the Google Hangouts for those that want to join in. We may even record the hangouts and make them available on the discussion board. I know that I would like to get to know other FRCers a bit more personally than a discussion board can provided at times.

I was thinking that we may officially start this on June 1st. I get done teaching on the 23rd and then there is that pesky 11 year wedding anniversary to attend to :-p

I will have a writeup with a list of books and such soon. We can hash over that and then I'll open a sign-up list. I may host this through the Red Stick Rumble since the domain name is already established and I can get a forum created pretty simply.

Count me in as interested as well.

Sounds like fun, I'd be down!

Definitly interested.. you could try something like Skype and have a group chat real time....

IceStorm 06-05-2013 19:44

Interested as well. Not sure if I could do every week or not though. I work in the school but behind the scenes doing IT and summer is actually our busy time of the year. That's when all the computer labs get redone as well as new computers coming in.

I'd be interested! I'll need something to do when I'm not working this summer.

I'd be interested, but of course I'm a student, so if you'd like I could just sit in on the conversations.

If we say students should just listen to the conversations instead of being active participants, then I am not interested in participating. One of the main reasons why I love mentoring FIRST is that students teach me new things all the time.

Re: Summer Book Club

(Mentor) Depending on the book chosen, this seems like a great idea. Once a week is the realistic limit for me.

I wouldn't host it. Heck - I think students might add more to the conversation than some of us old fogies :-)

Hello everyone,

If you are interested in the book club, I've created a Forum for us to use as a place for discussion. Please go register and we can get started by choosing what book we will read first and the like.
