Website Careers

Is there still a career to be made in web design / web development? Most people now either go to big companies that get a website done in weeks instead of going to a freelancer that take a few months because they do it in all HTML and PHP

plus the small business use websites like webs.com and Wix.com and other free tools like that, so what do you guys think? Any careers left in web design?

Yes absolutely! Corporate websites less so, but web applications is a huge market to get in to. Think about systems like VIMS and TIMS for FIRST, every company has something to manage.

The company I work for has about 10 developer positions open right now. We can't find the right people to fill them. By right people, I mean developers that are willing to talk to customers, learn new things, and care about the quality of their work.

Quality of work is the huge one. I would say a lot of my projects that come in have to have rework because the original developer didn't understand patterns and practices that make maintenance and extension easier. Learn a good object oriented language (my primary language is C#), and learn about SOLID principles and DRY (Don't repeat yourself).
