2014 Predicted Event Calendar
 

In an effort to figure out travel schedules, I wanted to compile a list of events for the 2014 season. While the official schedule is several months away, I figure everyone has a little bit of insight into a few regionals.

*DISCLAIMER* The official event calendar will be released by FIRST in September. Any plans based on inaccurate information in this thread are not the fault of the posters. This post is in the Rumor forum for a reason.

I'll get it started and try to keep this updated as more information is made available. Please provide justification for your prediction (i.e. listed on venue event calendar, host university spring/quarter break, local FIRST affiliate email, etc.)

I hope this prediction is wrong, but according to the SJSU and UC Davis websites, both have their spring breaks during week 5, which would result in SVR and Davis being the same week. :eek:

I highly doubt that would happen as usually the 3 events in northern California (SVR, Sac, CVR) end up on different weekends just as the 3 events in southern California (LA, SD, IE) do. I'm sure something will be worked out to keep the events on different weekends.

Bayou will be Week 6. (Apr 3-5)

That will put it the latest it has ever been. It is typically in the front half of the season, but often changes.

I would expect the Canadian regionals to hold their positions, but have nothing to confirm that (except the post about the new North Bay "Northern Ontario Regional" claiming it will be week 1 or 5, dependent on what the fate of GTRWest is).

GTRWest may be moving to a new home in 2014. If it stays at Hershey Centre, I'd expect Wk 1 ONNB, Wk2 ONTO, Wk3 QCMO, Wk4 ONWA, Wk5 ONTO2, and Wk6 ABCA. If ONTO2 moves, it could go to Wk1 and ONNB to Wk5.

Per the HBG Convention Center website, Alamo will be Week 1 next year.

I'd tentatively say that Colorado is Week 7.

The South Florida Regional is week 6 according to the venue calender.

I can't find anything to confirm it (I looked on uniprix stadium's website), but QCMO has been Week 3 both years its existed (2012/2013), and I can't see any reason it would change (the Canadian regionals haven't historically moved around much, if at all, and now that there is a full 6 week complement of them, moving them around has repercussions on at least one other event).

It occurs to me that as more districts come online, pre-championship scouting is about to get much harder, since Week 7 will get more and more busy. Historically, there's only been 2-4 events on any given weekend that the majority of people want to watch. Week 7 will be loaded with all the stacked events.

The Tech Valley Regional could end up being week 2 or week 3. We do not know for certain quite yet, although week 3 is the preferred week because it lines up with RPI's spring break. I'll post here when we know for sure.

As far as I know, Detroit District is Week 3, as it has been for the past 4 years.

If everything shakes out as expected, I believe I heard tell of 10k Lakes and North Star being week 5 again.

When we did NYC in 2011, we werent prepared and it was just way too cold. We didnt do as much as we wanted to, especially in the evenings. A whopping 20-30 degrees!:ahh:
Indiana and Utah this past year were just as cold, but we were prepared this time around and didnt have to walk all over like in NYC.

Correct, this was my source, and I heard secondhand "through the grapevine" that Mt. Olive would be Week 1 and BRR would be Week 5

I'm so jealous. Here in New England there have been times where I would have done anything to get 20-30 degree weather. Try getting to your regional and back an hour away for 3 days through 6in of snow. I was stuck on the same 1 mile stretch of highway for 45 minutes before we finally got passed the ~10 cars in a row whose tires slipped and lost control.

In the last two years, Phoenix Regional has been Week 4. I tentatively expect that to continue.

Unless you have inside info, I wouldn't expect all or most Michigan districts to be in the same weeks as they have been. It's likely there will be major timing shakeups this year.

Vegas looks like week 6 again, pending FIRST approval and venue confirmation as always.

I have heard rumblings of Palmetto staying Week 1, but they are just that: rumblings. Nothing is posted on the website of any venue ever to host the Palmetto Regional*, so nothing is set for sure.

*I checked the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, North Charleston Coliseum, and Colonial Life Arena in Columbia. Littlejohn Coliseum doesn't have an event schedule I can find; I think they remember the medal count of the USC-sponsored teams while it was up there ;).

These are the correct week assignments. There may be an additional event added to the schedule in the coming weeks.

Any particular reason why (from what's been said here) the schedule in Michigan seems to be changing drastically?

The schedule adopted at the MAR Board of Directors meeting (some subject to venue approval) this past Thursday night:

Week 1: Hatboro-Horsham; Mt. Olive (Districts)
Week 3: Springside-Chestnut Hill; Clifton (Districts)
Week 4: Lenape-Seneca (District)
Week 5: Bridgewater (District)
Week 7: MAR Region Championship-Lehigh University - Bethlehem, PA

Again, the schedule is not official until posted in TIMS for registration, but as far as MAR goes this is what should be expected.

Since there are six California regionals, I hope they have one each week of competition season (except Week 7) instead of having two on the same weekend like Sacramento and LA have been. However, this is unlikely.

Just got an official e-mail from KC FIRST.

Greater Kansas City Regional will likely be held Week Four (March 19-22 2014)

Location: Hale Arena - American Royal Complex (same as the last 7 years.)

2014 was not the target date for change. Truthfully, we just had some turnover this summer for our regional leadership. Not entirely sure what impact that will have on our rate of change.

That's a shame, I have been amazed at the level that GKC has grown to under their leadership, but I'm sure the west side of the state will remain strong.

As for the Saint Louis Regional's date I would *speculate* that it will be occurring during week 3 to go along with SLU's spring break.

Really hoping that Buckeye can switch to a different week this year. Its typically Week 5, and we (2252) have been heavily considering going to FLR this year. As reigning champs of Buckeye, we're pretty much obligated to go, including the fact that Buckeye is when our team recruits new students. Hopefully this can be resolved especially after the Buckeye blunder this year.

Sorry if the dates might not work for you folks, however teams have shipped their robots back to back weekends from Hawaii via 1 day air, using donated airbills last year to the Hawaii event.

Well, these are all rumors to begin with, so I wouldn't give up hope just yet.

Plus, it'd be just plain silly if directors in the region aren't communicating and coordinating with each other.

I haven't heard anything official about any of them, but I'd assume CVR would either be Week 1 again or Week 2, and that SAC and SVR will definitely fall on different weeks.

I have also heard that Smokey was week 5 as well. Bummer for us because I was looking forward to trying to go back. But the fact is both Peachtree & Smokey essentially fill up in the first round making them a difficult second round pick.

None of this is done in a vacuum. It all coordinated by the folks in CT because they have the fields, FTAs, etc. The other issue that plays into it is when the venues are actually available.

The Crossroads, St. Louis, and Kansas City Regionals will be interesting this year. Every Year the St. Louis Regional has hosted many KC teams. The KC and STL regionals were hosted on the same week, week 3. Many of the teams from both the STL and the KC regionals were upset with the scheduling because they could not attend both. Many teams from both regionals went to Crossroads. If the prior guess is right, and Crossroads is week 2, I'd guess KC will be week 3 and St. Louis week 4.

Switch STL and KC weeks and you should be right for those two. You are also forgetting the Oklahoma and Razorback regionals as they also take many of the KC teams. I'm not sure about Crossroads this year as RH has their spring break extremely late in the year.

Rumor around TRR this weekend was that Lone Star is moving back to Week 6. I have not confirmed this with any official source. Also it might be a Fri-Sun event. Again this is all just hearsay until the planning committee releases more information.

That would make Lone Star an even harder event next year. Allowing all the bots there have lots of time to tweak/change. If Lone Star was week 6 this year my teams 30 pt climber would not have had a chance at all.

IIRC It is generally released early September. Last year it was released September 14th, and initial registration opened September 27th

There's actually surprising little team cross over from these two events. Very few LA or MS teams play at Lone Star anymore (none last year) and only a handful Texas teams (4 last season) traditionally cross the border to play at Bayou each year. It'll be very sad if we can't go to Bayou next year but overall not too many teams will be affected.

No way would they put Sacramento and Silicon Valley the same week, they're way too close and a lot of teams go to both of those. I know Silicon Valley traditionally is on the week of SJSU's spring break but Sacramento isn't always that week, it's been during a school week before.

Given that New England will be making the switch to districts for 2014, I do not think there will be a regional event at WPI. However, I would not rule out the possibility of a WPI district event.

Honestly though, I understand the confusion! I don't know exactly which states border... Iowa for example... and I like to think I'm pretty good with geography!

Well, we are interested in crossing the border and going to Lone Star or Dallas mainly because we really want to see some different competition, and because it would be a huge learning expirience for us being around some of the successful Texas teams. And its a LOT shorter than going to Arkansas or Orlando.

I completely agree, I'm just saying both events will fill up even if they share the same week, so it's not necessary for the directors to coordinate their schedules. I wish they were on different weeks too.

As a member of the Georgia FIRST planning committee, I have been duly authorized to confirm that yes indeed, we are planning on having the event during week 5 in exhibit hall 'B' at the Georgia World Congress Center.

The rumor is now confirmed. Lone Star is scheduled for Apr 4th - 6th at George R. Brown Convention Center.

According to the calendar on the Friends of Hawaii Web Page, the Hawaii Regional is actually going to be held on March 27-29.
