Say goodbye to Excite@Home?

For all you @home users:

It seems that Excite@home could be pulling the plug on cable modem subscribers...

say it ain't so!

I got a letter from AT&T a few days ago, but I only skimmed it. It said something to the effect that they're trying to keep everyone's internet service running, but there may be an outage. If @Home crumbles (probable) AT&T will most likely take over as ISP, but there could be a period of time that we're without our service. Now I've got to go home and re-read that letter.

Mike

Brandon Martus 28-11-2001 11:01

I've also heard (from a co-worker) that it may just be the e-mail & webhosting Excite@home services that will die. The actual internet service may still work.

So ... I'm not 100% sure ...

Joel J 28-11-2001 15:13

my letter says..

In my letter AT&T told me that they were building their own network just in case Excite@Home isn't given a grace period by the government. Without this grace period AT&T doesn't get enough time to purchase Excite@Home's assets, which would make its value next to nothing. If they don't get to purchase Excite@Home they will switch to their own network and our email addys will end with attbi.com instead of home.com. For example joelster@attbi.com would be my email address not joelster@home.com. I don't really like it, but on the other hand I only care about speed.

Brandon Martus 28-11-2001 15:20

Yeah...a bunch of people I know from the Toronto / Ontario area of canada have Rogers Cable as their provider.

Their e-mails have changed over in the past few weeks from user@home.com to user@rogers.com.

Dan 550 28-11-2001 20:39

Prodigy@home

I have Prodigy@home, which is somewhat affiliated with Excite, which helped re-launch Prodigy a few years back. Within the past weeks, I got a few Prodigy@home update newsletters about a name change and such, and my eMail has switched back to ...@prodigy.net, as it was before I got on their cable service. Comcast, my cable company, has assured the NJ/PA users of its cable distribution service that their @home services will be continued by either their @home affiliator or Comcast or a 3rd party, and will continue to be delivered over the same cable lines. The @home services were all intertwined, and it appears that they will still be. But I have my good, trusty, Prodigy internet, and that's all I care about.

Cox @ Home seems confident

Quote:

Thank you for your inquiry. Cox is committed to providing the best
customer service possible.

We are actively negotiating with all parties involved to come to an
agreement BEFORE Friday. We're hopeful that we can reach an agreement
before the court ruling, which would mean that this ruling is a
non-issue.

If we do not reach an agreement to continue uninterrupted service before
Friday, then we will look to the judge for a ruling on IF Excite@Home
HAS THE RIGHT to shut down service. If the judge rules that Excite@Home
has the right to shut down, we will obviously take all possible legal
actions, such as filing an appeal and asking for a stay, which is
essentially a hold on any action.

In addition, we are developing service contingency plans that address
all possible scenarios, and we will keep you informed.

We hope that we have been able to provide you with the information you
requested. If we have not, or if we can be of any additional service to
you, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
This was an e-mail I got requesting info from COX.

So it seems like this will be dragged on until someone has bought it out, which is most likely ATT

Wayne Doenges 29-11-2001 07:05

OH, the humanity! Say it isn't so!
I don't want to go back to a 56k Modem. I don't think I can go back to 2-3 hour downloads. :(

Wayne D.

Tom Fairchild 29-11-2001 07:19

Yeah, yeah, cry me a river. ;) 56K life isn't too bad, though I admit that I really do want a cable modem now that they're available in our area.

~Tom Fairchild~, who's having a real hard time feelin' sorry for you guys. :p

Wayne Doenges 29-11-2001 07:40

Tom
When I HAD a 56k modem I downloaded a 2 meg file. It took me almost 2 hours.
With cable I downloaded a 20 meg file in 2 minutes.

A Temporary Solution...for me at least

Well, if Comcast(the provider for my area) does temporarily lost service, I can always go back to using the T3 at work and carrying things home on a CD-R or Zip Disk...of course, for whatever reason, they only ran 10Base/T for the internet link within the office...

When you're only way of getting on the internet is high speed, you get used to it. Going back would be a hard thing. Although, my cable at home is so slow sometimes, I swear 56k could be faster :) j/k

Tom Fairchild 30-11-2001 07:59

LoL, okay Nate, that just crossed the line. You're complaining because your network can only get you 10megs a second out of your T3 line?

~Tom Fairchild~, who's weeping heavily for Nate's loss. ;) j/k
(Sorry Nate! Just gotta pick on ya, even though I'm using a T1 here at school)

D.J. Fluck 30-11-2001 08:11

Excite at home isnt in our area, but we have Insight@home, the cable TV provider. A few months ago the cable provider had some financial problems, and closely avoided getting their plug pulled....now its 40 dollars a month...thats the only reason why i am still using 56k....

Clark Gilbert 30-11-2001 08:31

56k!

I love my 56k!!!:D :D

It runs fast and it connects very fast....

Plus i was wondering what service Wayne Doenges had where it took him 2 hours to download a 2mb file.. (i think i've downloaded a 20mb file in that time) plus it also depends on the website that you are downloading the file from, some places limit you to how fast you can download it...

David Kelly 30-11-2001 09:41

my internet service went out last night at 9pm est. did anyone elses go out that uses @HOME. as of this morning, it still didn't work. i'll have to try it again when i get out at 10:30. halfdays RULE!!!

Brandon Martus 30-11-2001 09:48

Someone at work is monitoing mine & my friends cable (same neighborhood) from his DSL line, and my ping averages have risen from 100ms to 600ms in the past two days... my friends cable has stayed at 100ms. I wonder what happened at my house.

I was upset they were 100ms ... and now they're 600ms ... super

Kyle Fenton 30-11-2001 14:18

I measured them too--Much slower last night

I was doing the @Home network diagnoses tool, and the average ping time was 200 ms, when usually it is 10-20 ms. I did the speed test on the MSN website and it stated that I had a connection about the same as a 28.8 modem. But anyway it appears that is back up to speed now.

David Kelly 30-11-2001 16:43

my @HOME works now and seems to be going a LOT faster. i better d/l a bunch of stuff before we really loose service.

Jeff Waegelin 30-11-2001 17:03

Well, for the moment, @Home appears to still be running. The real key, however, will be at 3 AM EST tomorrow. That is when @Home's service agreements with the cable companies end, and they can, at that point, terminate service whenever they feel like it. Hopefully this is all just a bunch of maneuvering to try to get the most out of a buy-out deal, but only time will tell.....

Mike Soukup 30-11-2001 17:55

bad news for us all!!

The latest news it @Home will shut down @ midnight tonight :( Here's the news: http://slashdot.org/articles/01/11/30/212258.shtml Don't count on hearing anything from me this weekend

Mike

Matt Attallah 30-11-2001 18:30

56K Modems Rock!!

56K Modems Rock!!:D They are a little (ok, ok, a lot) slower than Cable modems, but that is what makes them so cool. If you loose a little bit of speed, it doesn't matter. On cable, you can vary a lot, and sometimes it slows down a lot! 56K doesn't! Hehe, we all should go back to 56k's!;)

gniticxe 30-11-2001 19:04

Retribution...

Hehe, I don't want to insult anyone with cable/dsl/t1, but...ha! My friend has cable and its incredibly fast, seeing as the cable switching box is actually in our neighborhood... But he always laughs at me (its all in good fun of course) when it takes a few secdonds for pages to load at my house, while he has instantaneous loading. Anyway, I get to go bother him tonight, as his ISP, Comcast@home, seems to be in the excite network. But, he will have the last laugh, as im sure Comcast will have its services up soon after they go down (if they do). So for tonight, 56K users, unite! lol ;)

Clark Gilbert 30-11-2001 19:11

VIVA!!!!

VIVA LA 56k!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's never near you to comfort and cheer you
When all those sad tears are fallin' baby from your eyes
He might be thrillin' baby but a-my love (my love, my love)
So dog-gone willin'
So kiss him (I wanna see you kiss him. I wanna see you kiss him)
Go on and kiss him goodbye

David Kelly 30-11-2001 21:48

if the service is down for a while, or never comes back im going to have to go buy a dialup because we don't own one:( :( :(

Tom Fairchild 30-11-2001 23:27

All this talk about connections has made me curious as to what connections people have... check out my poll as to what connection people are running on.

~Tom Fairchild~, proudly slowing down the Internet on his 56K.:D

David Kelly 01-12-2001 07:56

@Home still up as of 8am Saturday Dec. 1st:D :D

Jeff Waegelin 01-12-2001 13:09

Well, apparently it isn't up anymore. I lost my connection at around 10:00 AM EST this morning (Saturday). I am now using Comcast's "backup service". Netzero. Whoopee (don't you just love popup ads?). Ironically, the Excite@Home homepage (home.excite.com) is still up and running, though there is no new news on the news page.

With luck, @Home will be back up soon. If any of you cable guys do have service, say something. I am not sure as of yet whether @Home is down nationwide or just locally. For now, I guess I just have to live with 56K.

Jeff Waegelin 01-12-2001 13:48

News flash- @Home is not down (for Comcast users in SE Mich, at least)! I was looking online using my 56K, and found a solution to the problem.

Apparently AT&T was not negotiating with @Home, and they shut down their servers. Comcast, however, is negotiating, and the Comcast DNS servers are still running. Now, as those of you with Comcast@Home in MI know, AT&T used to run the service in some parts of Oakland County. My guess is, @Home did not know or realize that the Royal Oak servers were no longer AT&T-run, and shut them down.

Now, for the solution: change the DNS server addresses from the AT&T DNS to the Comcast DNS. If you are experiencing problems go to Control Panel/Network and Select TCP/IP, and click properties. Go under the DNS tab, and remove your DNS Server addresses. They should be:

24.2.248.33 (or something close to that)

Change them to:

24.2.68.33 and
24.2.68.36

Your @Home connection should work fine now. Time for a return to cable speeds!

(note: as far as I know, this only works in for Comcast in SE Michigan)

David Kelly 01-12-2001 15:21

Comcast @HOME in Indy is running STRONG. :D It seems to be going a lot faster than it was before. I'm still crossing my fingers and hoping for the best :p

Never had any downtime here in Ypsilanti, MI...of course, I've been running everything server-assigned since I started with cable...
