2014 Chesapeake Regional

Year 12.
We are excited by the new venue at the University of Maryland College Park!
Welcome to the rookies registered so far, as well as all the great teams, including the two international teams.

Re: 2014 Chesapeake Regional

I'm curious as to how the facilities will work. Will the field be in the main arena with the pits in the secondary gymnasium, or will it all be in the gymnasium, or will it be something else entirely?

Anne Shade 01-10-2013 08:51

Re: 2014 Chesapeake Regional

The pits and field will all be in the same location, on the floor of the Comcast Center.

Phyrxes 01-10-2013 20:53

Re: 2014 Chesapeake Regional

I believe the Comcast Center is around the same size as the Patriot Center at GMU, that is larger in seating capacity than the Siegel Center at VCU but still a multipurpose college fieldhouse. I suspect that the field/pit layout will not change too much from, but I may be incorrect on that.

Sadly we are not making the trip up to Chesapeake this year to see the new venue.

The Chesapeake filled today with some slots held in reserve. We are delighted to welcome back lots of old friends, as well as some new teams. A nice balance of veterans, newer teams, and rookies from up and down the East Coast. And Canada. And England.

We are on that waitlist. We are really hoping to make it into Chesapeake's field. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with ya'll last year.

We are starting to make assignments for volunteers at the event this year. If you are interested in volunteering and haven't signed up yet in the VIMS - do it soon. Visit VIMS at https://my.usfirst.org/VIMS

We will have lots more info coming about the FIRST Stop visitor program, and will have a very active student ambassador program. More info to come on how to get involved.

Team 329 is looking forward to returning to the great Chesapeake Regional again this year. Of the 4 regionals we've competed in, it was by far, the best. Of course, being lucky enough to win it might have influenced that opinion.

I know this is somewhat early to be asking this so specific a question, but does anyone know if this venue will provide for a true 10' X 10' pit area? The reason I ask is that we've spent 3 months and about 1500 man hours building a completely new pit this year and would like to not make unnecessary modifications. We're a couple of inches shy in each dimension, but could build new cabinets, making us 9' X 9'.

The Chesapeake Regional has been fortunate to have terrific Master of Ceremonies/Game Announcers over the years.
We are very excited to announce that the fabulous Jeff Seaton will be returning to the event as Master of Ceremonies this year!

RE: volunteers. We have a great lineup of volunteers again this year. We are making an effort to train more local folks in the key roles as we are expanding our volunteer base, including engaging many FIRST alums as well as local groups.

We will be starting to make assignments outside of the lead roles later this month. Please get your info in the VIMS asap if you want to volunteer.

Hi...

Team 1610 is looking forward to visiting the Chesapeake regional for the first time. Seeing that Jeff will be MC will make it all the better for teams from Virginia (he MC's VCU too) I'm actually from that area (born and raised in the Baltimore area , i used to work in DC and my dad used to own a house in Laurel for a while and later lived in New Carrolton ) So i know the area well. Wish they
had First there when i lived in Maryland. I'm hoping to be able to invite some family to come see the competition and our team.

As a heads up, high school/university students can now attend BOTH UMD's Bitcamp Hackathon AND the Chesapeake Regionals. Bitcamp will provide showers, endless food, and a sleeping area if you choose to attend the hackathon - and as a bonus you'll be able to check out cool tech like Oculus Rifts and Google Glass since it runs overnight Friday-Saturday and ends Sunday.

It is definitely a great opportunity for programmers and beginners alike to get noticed for that they do and they'll get a chance to build a really cool product in under 24 hours. A hackathon is worth the experience: https://medium.com/hackathons-anonymous/3d5413601c05

From the Senior Mentor Newsletter:

We are still looking for volunteers for the Chesapeake Regional on April 3-5. Specifically we are still looking for:

- Safety Advisors
- Field Reset/Repair (specifically for Thursday)
- Team queuing
- Crowd control
- Safety Glasses Attendant

If you know anyone who may be interested, please have them sign up in the VIMS.

Student Ambassadors: The Chesapeake Regional is recruiting Student Ambassadors to be gracious hosts to visitors to our FRC Regional competition. If you have students who enjoy meeting and talking with folks and sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm for FIRST robotics, we would lover to have them as Student Ambassadors for our FIRST Stop program! No experience required - we will have a short training session on Thursday of competition and students may sign up for a time slot on either Friday or Saturday or both.

Student singers: The Chesapeake Regional will be continuing its long standing tradition to have a group of students from many of the represented teams sing the National Anthem during opening ceremonies on both Friday and Saturday. The group will have several practices on Thursday to prepare.

We have a partnership this year with Dr. David Tomblin and the Science, Technology and Society College Park Scholars Program and are welcoming many former FIRSTers as well as other students as volunteers. You will see them in various roles at the event.

Encourage your visitors to sign up for FIRST Stop. We will tailor their visitor to exactly what they want to see. http://www.mdfirst.org/firststop.html and some of the Ambassadors are UMD students.

Welcome to the 160+ GREAT volunteers. That said, we still have a couple of spots for folks that can volunteer all 3 days -Thurs-Sat. We will have very few, if any, slots for walk ins. We are also looking for some more volunteers to help with the team social.

Welcome to all the alumni and to all the students from Univ. of MD who are helping.

Email went out to all teams on 3/23. Info about lunch pre-orders, team social, team showcase, Chesapeake chorus, student ambassadors, guest invites through FIRST Stop.

Heads up: We will be holding Chairman's interviews on Thurs and Fri. More info will go out to teams.

So many people to thank and we haven't even started. The team has been hard at work planning.

Website: http://www.mdfirst.org/programs/firs...-regional.html

There is some very detailed parking and load in info here. We will be helping direct teams to quickly unload.

Info has gone out to all teams about the Team Social. We still have some pizzas left and some slots for the show-your-talent-show on Friday night so be sure to sign up. Only $5/pp - for students and mentors.

Info has gone out and you will receive more in the packets about these starting-on-Thursday events: Team Showcase, Chesapeake Chorus practice, Student Ambassador training, Chairman's Interviews and NEMO meeting.

FIRST Stop is a great opportunity to introduce guests to the event and FIRST. We treat every guest like a VIP and tailor a tour to what they want to see. Register in advance or at the event.

Safe travels and see you on Thursday.

Hey RoboMom, were you at the DC regional last week? One of the issues I had was the visibility of the match, particularly from the area in front of the field and screen. Will Chesapeake have similar problems?

The height of the wall is not nearly as high at UMD as at GMU, I don't think it will be a major issue.

Oh that should be sweet. Will the video be piped into the overhead screens? Being able to see the matches and scores from anywhere in the arena will be great. Also will the field be near the really steep "wall" section or on the other side?

The last layout for Chesapeake I saw had the field at the endzone side, setup like it was at GMU.

The field is not on the super steep student section of seating but the opposite end. We don't anticipate the view issues that DC had and will work to make sure the field is setup far enough back tomorrow.

Still working on possibly piping the field videos on the overhead screens but that's not a definite yet. There is a cost involved...

Dear University of Maryland Community,

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is hosting over 2,000 visitors at our third Admitted Student Open House for newly admitted students on Friday, April 4, 2014. The event will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Visiting families will park in the Stadium Drive Garage and proceed to the Cole Student Activities Building for registration and a morning welcome. Students will visit various academic departments around campus and attend sessions in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union throughout the morning and afternoon.

Due to the large volume of guests, I encourage faculty, staff, and students to consider alternate entrance points to campus beyond the traditional Route 1 corridor. Several alternatives include the Comcast entrance off of Route 193 or Route 201/Kenilworth Avenue through the main gates of campus.

Please join us in welcoming these admitted Terps to campus!

Barbara Gill
Assistant Vice President for Undergraduate Admissions and Enrollment Planning

More like unfortunate timing. I's pretty standard for UMD to have these events during the spring. Luckily, I'm about a 5 minute walk from the arena and don't have to worry about driving tomorrow.

Practice day was tons of fun. Coming out of the VA Regional, the robot was in tip top shape, so we got inspected right away. That let us not only make all our scheduled practice matches (for the first time ever) but also play more fill in matches than we could count.

We used this practice match to work with team 1629 on catching a ball thrown over the truss. It took a few tries, but we got it down by the end of the match.

Good luck to everyone today!

It's only 2,000 people in a major metropolitan area, the basketball arena seats well more than us+2k, let alone the football stadium on campus. It shouldn't be a big deal.

What an event!
We were watching the live stream all day today, and it was an amazing experience!

It was great to see our VA alliance parter, B.O.T., go on to lead their own alliance to the finals. It was also great to see other VAR teams, Triple Helix and Garrett Coalition, win the event.

2363 had a great time at the Chesapeake regional. We'd like to thank our partners 1629 for selecting us as their alliance partners and 623 for joining us and playing great throughout the elimination rounds. We were very excited when 623 was still available when it got back to our alliance for the last pick.

Congrats also to 1629 for their Chairman's award win, I'm not sure you could have a more perfect regional, 1st seed, regional winners, and chairman's winners. You guys are one heck of a team and we thoroughly enjoyed competing with and against you the entire competition.

We'd also like to thank our opponents in the finals, our great friends from 1610 and their partners 1741, 4945, and 2421. You all were great teams and we enjoyed playing Aerial Assist with you guys.

Thanks for an excellent experience at the Chesapeake Regional.
The venue was very nice (especially the carpeted pits!) There were several top notch competitors. The matches were exciting to watch. The regional planning committee did a great job of setting stuff up and communicating with teams and keeping us updated.

I think there were some challenges on the field, which cause delays as the ref's deal with them. We had to replay SF2-3 because of a field fault. Apparently something was unplugged on the hot goal for the red alliance. Luckily for us, the end result was the same. Of course, this resulted in us having to play 5 matches in a row and our drive motors were quite hot, pushing 150 F after the last match and the air compressor was about 160 F.

A sour spot for me: I didn't particularly appreciate being harshly accused by one team's mentor of breaking their team's robot during a match, especially when there's no way our robot caused the particular damage. We had even offered to help the team with any repairs. My team reviewed the match video that evening where the damage occurred and confirmed we never were near the damaged robot.

Some other items which could be improved in the future: I didn't really like the access restrictions to certain stair cases, as it made the trip to and from the stands excessively long. The safety glasses table on Thursday was refusing to loan any glasses to people with team shirts, despite the fact that they might be parents/family of teams, rather than team members or mentors (who should be allowed to borrow them too). We talked to the lead safety advisor, and I think he remedied the situation.

To end on a positive note:
We walked away with 4 awards: Entrepreneurship, Gracious Professionalism, and our first time ever with Industrial Safety, plus the Regional Finalist award. Thanks to our alliance partners from 1610, 4945, and last minute addition for the final match, 2421. This is one of the best elimination alliances I've had the privilege of being a part since I joined our team. Congratulations to the Winners, teams 1629, 2363, and 623. Congratulations, again, to team 1629 on their RCA win. Congrats to 329 for winning EI. Congratulations to 4949 for winning Rookie All Star. Good luck at the World Championship to all the winners.

Re: 2014 Chesapeake Regional

Thank you to everyone involved in making the 2014 Chesapeake Regional a success. I know there are many moving parts, but you all did an exceptional job of organizing this event.

On behalf of Team 1629, we would like to say thank you to our alliance partners 2363 Triple Helix, and 623 Cougar Robotics. We truly complimented each other throughout the eliminations, and brought home the gold. Each team did exactly what was asked of them to make the alliance that much more effective.

2363, your double autonomous was deadly, and your truss catch was awesome! You all are an amazing team, and there will be great things to come!!! We look forward to working with you again!

623, your inbounding/trussing/stellar defense was what kept this alliance strong. You did exactly what was asked of you and never waivered once bit when strategy changed. Thank you for joining us on the amazing journey and keep up the great work!

329, congratulations on your EI award, you have a truly amazing story and good luck at the Championships!

Steve Shade and all of the referees, you all were amazing. You handled everything with class and pride, even in the face of adversity. You gave the announcers the penalties and the reasons for the field resets. The job you have is the hardest in FIRST, but you all did it well!!! Thank you for smoothly ran matches, and overall attention to detail.

Good luck to everyone attending the Championship Event, we hope to see everyone there!

We had excellent luck this year with using a fan to blow cooling air over our compressor during operation. Having a pneumatic shooter, the compressor spent a lot of time on when the robot was enabled.

Also what happened that forced so many delays in the eliminations? There was even a rematch that wasn't really explained.

The reflective target on the blue goal was unplugged/not fully seated and did not operate during autonomous. This resulted in the field call to replay the match.

There was also use of an alliance member substitution card that required a lengthy conversation with the head ref.

The rest of the delays were standard time periods between brackets.

Does anyone have video of the awards ceremony, or at least the Innovation in Control Award? I am so proud of my team for winning, and we want to use the judge's script for PR purposes, as well as just listen to our names announced over and over again. So over the moon about this!

Hello...

We had a great time at Chesapeake. Congrats go out to winners 1629 (and their Chairmans win ),623 and our friends from 2363...see you all at St. Louis. Also congrats go out to our alliance partners 1741, 4945 and 2421.

The venue was great and it was well run. The only two things i didn't like were
the way the stairs to the field were set up (which if its held there again will
probably be changed) and the load in/ load out. I guess i'm spoiled by the way they do it at VCU and Palmetto.

Thank you to all the teams! We also had a crew of terrific volunteers.
This was the first year in this venue and there were many decisions to be made behind the scenes and in the planning stages. It's always a balancing act between safety, working with venue restrictions, the volunteer base to support decisions and what works best for the teams.
All the teams and volunteers will be given the opportunity to give feedback in a survey, and the planning committee will listen.
We had some talented photographers who took thousands of really great photos of teams, volunteers and the event. These should be up on our website soon.

I know it won't help this year, but, typically, If you go to the announcer right after the awards ceremony you can get the script itself without need for video.

Thank You for the photos Peter! That's our first technical award ever.

1885 had a lot of fun at Chesapeake. Well, except when we were double teamed by defenders - that's not so fun. The referee'ing was great all around, some of the best I've seen this year.

Thank you 329 and 2537 for being good partners for elims. We had a strategy that has worked at many events before and we could have made it all the way with just a little luck at the right moments.

We are really glad to see a lot of our local friends get their spots to Championships; congratulations! We look forward to seeing you there.

Quick survey went out to all the teams and volunteers. We are getting some great feedback. Thanks to all who are taking the time to send in suggestions.

Thank you so much everyone for the amazing weekend from Team 1547 - Where's Waldo! Everyone was so welcoming and friendly! We had the time of our lives and made friends we will never forget. We were so happy to accept the Spirit Award, it was so much fun to share our spirit with you all! We're hoping to see you all again soon. :)

We were kicking ourselves on the way home for not doing that. This is the first year our team has won anything, so we were so shocked that I don't think anyone was thinking

Last night I finished sorting and uploading the photos from my camera. It's interesting to see what you get when you lend your camera to students to take pictures. It's a whole different view of the competition.

Feel free to browse the photos and download them for your own use. There are lots of really nice pictures of lots of different people who were at the regional. If your pit was near ours, you were on our eliminations alliance, or sat near us in the stands, your chances will be better of finding a picture.

Chesapeake Regional pictures

Also, our multimedia team is in the process of uploading all the match videos to the Triple Helix youtube channel. About half of them are available now, with more to come.

You didn't happen to film the day 2 awards Ceremony, did you?

Seems like I missed quite a shindig while I was at the FTC East Super Regional.

2363, glad to see you guys got the win on two fronts.
1885, good see see you guys walk way with the Creativity Award. I wish now I would have taken one of your mentors up on the offer of a ride.
1629, congrats on a double banner showing.
3373, Philip, I'm glad to see the robot and team had a good showing. Based on that I presume you got the robot singing the right tune. (I was one of the CSAs that helped you out in Virginia.)

And to 1610, congratulations on another great showing. The Quality Award was a welcome surprise. I just wish I could have been there. But I know you were in good hands.

Thanks for the help at Richmond! Gremlins are not always fun to deal with, but you guys made it a little more bearable. Thanks a bunch!

Todd...

Are you guys planning to upload the later matches from Chesapeake?
I'd really like to see the one we were both in (match 61 from friday?)
Hope you all got your hotel and ride arranged. We'll be at the Hilton.
We're sharing a bus with 384.

See you all at St. Louis.

I wish I could have volunteered here...I go to school in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins. For future years, does anyone know any good ways to get from Baltimore to College Park? I don't have a car, and the only way I can think of is to take the MARC Penn Line towards DC, get off in New Carrolton, and take a bus to UMD (a short two and a half hour trip...) Is there a better way?

Sadly that looks like the best way from JHU to UMD by public transportation, however remember there are tons of Balmore teams that you could probably reach out to for a ride.

Well, there is the plan, and then there is the execution...

In the meantime, I'm posting the video of our matches which I personally recorded. Our match together was Q51, where we got the perfect cycle. (Still psyched about that.)

I was standing beside the field getting ready for our match when that happened - was really awesome. Glad you all were able to make it to worlds after your strong showing at Richmond.

Also, I know you all recorded the matches. Did you guys record the awards ceremony as well?

Thanks! We forgot to grab the judge's bio on us after we gott he award (too excited) and now the business team is mad at me for not getting it.

I kind of want the money to continue to happen, so I am looking all over to get it... :D

Alright, I've gone through most of my 7336 photos pruning, dutifully tagging, and uploading them for your viewing pleasure. :D

The mass of photos (in order by event time): https://www.flickr.com/photos/122681157@N06/

Please feel free to use any photos for your own use. I have to still go through quarter/semi/finals photos. (just 1831 photos there!) There are a lot of photos of some teams, and not many of others, I apologize if your team was not well covered. PM if you don't see many of your team, I can take another look. Also let me know if something is tagged incorrectly. Enjoy!

As your FTA for the weekend, I want to thank all the teams for being prepared. We consistently had 6 minute match cycle times, which was faster than other events I attended, and allowed all teams to get 11 matches instead of 10. There was a wonderful que and field reset team that worked wonders and the on field performance was solid. We had a few hiccups here and there, but teams and volunteers were able to work together to handle them in a positive manner. I hope to have as good an experience next year!

Hurray robots and robot people!

Thanks for all the help over Richmond and Chesapeake, especially with the whole wallet fiasco. You made a difficult situation much easier than it could have been.
