I have a DSL modem but i also have a bootleg wireless link to my schools T1. I created a wireless link with a router and some cisco antenas. I use VPN to encrypt it. Dont tell the school. It is super fast.

on the survey, I see someone has selected "Other"....would the "other" = 33.6 or 28.8? If not, what else is there?
Other could also mean satelite
One of my friends have that and like it, as for me I have a 56k @ both my mom and dad's houses, a slow T1 @ work (sharing bandwidth with multiple company locations sucks) and a very nice T1 @ college!!!

I am looking into making a network at home for two computers with a cable modem, does anyone know how I go about doing this??? What hardware do I need on the computers and also what other hardware do I need?
Both the computers already have a network card.

D.J. Fluck 09-12-2001 19:45

ah i see now...ok...i was worried that someone still uses 28.8 or something slower

EddieMcD 09-12-2001 21:04

I am proud owner of the almighty "56K Modem That Actually Gets 56K"! OK, not exactly 56K, but still up there.

New DSL users here, we just transferedfrom 56k a few weeks ago, you got to love broadband connections, also we are running a wireless D-link router in my house now so that all 3 of our computers have the DSL works pretty well 95% of the time.

If both computer already have NIC Cards, then all you really need is a switch and the cable modem that you probably are required to use from your provider. Other than that, the cable company should be able to answer any questions you might have about it.

As Tom said, you could go out and get a switch, but then you'll have to pay your provider an extra $5 or so per month for multiple IP's. I'd recommend getting a router instead. It allows you to use only 1 IP from your ISP, and it provides more security. What the router does is isolate your LAN from the rest of the world. If any hacker-wannabees try to get at your computer, they'll have to go through the router first. Plus you can open up file sharing on your computers and not worry about other people seeing your files. The only drawback is it's more complex to set up, and you may have to do some fancy (but easy) work to set up some apps that make direct connections to other computers (like AIM). A decent site for beginners is www.practicallynetworked.com

as i answered in the poll i have a 56k connection but it is a very nice connection. We had to get a special line all the way out to where we live in my town just to get it for my dad's computer, so we have a direct connection. Lately we have been looking into Cable Connection for all of our other computers but that will take a little longer unfortunately:(

Actually, it's not quite that complicated.

Just spend 80 bucks, and buy a NetGear Cable/DSL router. It'll do everything automagicily. I've been using it for about 4 months now to share my cable modem with 3 other people.
