Well, looking at last year's thread:

For those of you looking for a good week 3 regional, here are some facts.

A lot of parity in the field.
  • No team has ever captained the winning alliance more than once. (2007 = 935; 2008 = 476; 2009 = 1806; 2010 = 2345; 2011 = 525; 2012 = 1986)
  • No team has ever been on the winning alliance more than twice.

A deep top end. In 2012...
  • 5 teams went on to seed #1 at another regional event: 16, 935, 1986, 2996, 3528
  • 9 Teams total were part of alliances that won a regional
  • 1/4th of last years field (16/64 teams) attended champs.

Currently 4 states are represented
  • Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma

All the trivia in the "a lot of parity in the field" was broken by team 1986 captaining the winning alliance while 1806 won it's 3rd Greater Kansas City Regional.

As far as a deep top end goes:
2013:
1 Divisional Finalist at Worlds
2 Teams that made Eliminations in their respective divisions at worlds
2 FRC Top 25 Robots (Ranked #3 and #22)
6 Regional Winner Trophies were brought back to the Kansas City Area (967 makes 7, but they are neither from Kansas City nor registered for this year)
8 World Championship Qualifying Teams (By My Count) (Would be 9 with 1710)

5 states are represented: Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma

Maybe the statistics aren't as impressive, but KC and STL got divided last year by being events on the same week, and team 16 opted not to return to Kansas City. With that in perspective, along with the fact that many teams went to the Razorback Regional where they were beat by an alliance captained by eventual FRC World Champions, team 1477, it's quite understandable that we don't have 9 regional winning teams from 2013.

Excellent. I think getting on the wait list before 2nd registration opens up this afternoon is important.

There should still be a few spots left open for teams wanting to come in for 2nd registrations this afternoon as well. We're in a new arena this year, and organizers are indicating a 60 team target size.

Re: 2014 Greater Kansas City Regional

Had a great time at the "FIRST LOOK" for our new regional venue.

Numbers were drawn at random and teams were then given the oppotunity to select their pit location.
A map of the pits can be found here.

I had to leave the event early, and wasn't there for the pit selection, but I did notice one team on the Pit-Map that isn't on the official registration list yet. Must be that one team on the waitlist still.

PS. Olathe South is now registered, taking us to 9 rookies. 5041 from Iowa is no longer registered for KC. They are now the only rookie registered for Central Illinois.

118 sure seems to have a spot in the pits. When I checked the FIRST website earlier in the day, they still weren't listed though. That would be a lot of fun. KC can be pretty competitive.

So to those that went, how does the seating situation look? It's been a while since I've been to BTC, but I can't imagine there being much room for seating. That's been a major concern of mine since day one.

Last I heard the bleachers were going to hold about 950 per side (1900 total) which is almost 1000 seats less than Hale, but still more than 30 seats per team. From what I hear ShowReady loves the venue and doesn't think seating will be a problem. There will be substantially more seating than there was in the pit-fields at the 2011 championship.

Yes. The 3 Lee's Summit teams cooperate together to build a full size wooden practice field, invite teams to use it on the pre-bag weekend, and set it up for the local regional.

Really helps when tuning up those autonomous routines. ;)

There are still two empty pits on the diagram, so... Even after 118 comes off the waitlist there would be two openings for any team out there looking for a fun and competative week 3 regional. Would love to have the number of teams divisible by 6 and avoid surrogate matches. Call up the regional director and see if you can join us today.

Re: 2014 Greater Kansas City Regional

Seating: The venue is very large and organizers are bringing in bleachers to hold 1900. For comparison, the portable bleachers that were set up for Champs in 2011 held approx 900. Hale Arena had a capacity of 2800, but we all know much of that was empty. The seating will be closer to the field than was possible at Hale.

Practice Field: The venue layout shows a full size practice field area. We in the Lee's Summit Alliance will strive to provide a full field.

For those that have not seen the venue it is easy to wonder if it will be large enough, but it is quite enormous. There is room for a very spacious pit layout, machine shop, practice field, field area, and a large, separated area for FLL, demos, dining, etc. The lighting is much better than Hale, and there are several advantages such as ample free parking, more concession options, BYO food, better judging rooms, pits closer to the fileld, etc. Compared to some of the basketball arenas we have all competed in, it will be very spacious.

That's great news! I'm disappointed I couldn't attend, but it sounds like the venue will work out really well for the regional! Now just counting down the days until kickoff! (Is it weird that I'm counting those down but not to graduation? haha)

We've added another state! FRC 118, Robonauts are offically off the wait list and on the roster. Welcome aboard.

We're now at 58 teams. FYI: There is still pit space allocated for 2 more.

The Kansas City Regional is going to be great again this year. I'm really excited to meet all the rookie teams and to welcome team 118. I have seen and heard nothing but good things about their helpfulness and professionalism...their robots aren't bad either!:yikes:

Ooh, I would really like to see 118 and 1986 go head to head in a match or five.

On a different note, I really hope the the Lee's Summit teams host the "Saturday before bag day" practice scrimmage again this year. Having some field time before the end of build season was fantastic!

Then again, that might really mess with the rankings later...

Absolutely. The only thing that would stop us is if Kansas City landed an official week zero event.

Q1 eh? I know there is an algorithm with a random factor which generates the qualification pairings, but it seems like some high-end robots end up in that first match quite often. After we won our first regional at Hub City last year (where then reigning world champion 16 was featured in Q1) we saw Q1 in our next two regionals. And as Woolly is aware, we squared off against our top pick in GKC for Q1 OKC. Coincidence? That's what I'm told. It does make for an exciting start to the event.

GKC-2013 Q1 2410 3784 1763 935 1986 1625

I'll add a little more history to this

GKC-2012 Q1 1985 1939 1984 1806 1997 2972
Led to first CO-OP balance in Rebound Rumble. (1985, 1806)

Though, I wonder that if while the pairings may be random, the order may not be (For sake of robots not having back-to-back matches. matches 5 hours apart, etc) and that they look at the list of matches and while ordering matches for team-convenience, they might slip a high-powered match into the Q1 spot while doing so.

The pairings and sequence are all generated by the algorithm, which takes into account inter-match spacing and attempts to avoid anything resembling the output of the "algorithm of death" -- there's no hand sorting.

So, we're sure to have at least 2 2014 Regional Winners attending, and a Regional Chairman's winner. Though, there's a pretty good chance we could add more in Arkansas.
Here's to hoping there are plenty of wild cards up for grabs!

See you in a few weeks :)

I think KC might be one of the more underrated regionals. Most of the robots are extremely well built and there are so many great teams. You never know beforehand who is going to win it, and so many of ours go on to do really well in other regionals.

This year, it will definitely be a premiere regional, considering we will have three teams that are already in the Top 25 on FRC Top 25, with 118 being #2, 1986 being #4, and 1806 being #22. And that is just from week one results.

Hey guys, during the Arkansas Regional this year we came up with a new tradition, swaying whenever Mike (who MCs both the Greater Kansas City Regional and the Arkansas Regional) talks to the crowd. We would like other teams to join in with us during the KC regional this year.
With thanks,
Ethan Lopez

It always is unrightfuly so, if you look at the depth of teams KC is always hard. This is because we all started around the same time and have learned a lot of lessons though the years which makes it super competitive. Look at the last two weeks alone in team accomplishments.

1939 Chairman's award
4522 Regional Finalist, Quality Award
1986 Chairman's and Regional winners
1108 Chairman's, Regional win, and WFFA (even though they are not coming)

Kansas city teams clean up were ever they go.

With great teams like 1806,1730,1987,1723,935,118,1775,3528,1764 and so on the competition is really hard. I always love KC because I never know the outcome before it happens. :yikes: Many of these teams its the first competition, I know that many teams will end up doing very well at their first and second competition this year.

8 of the 58 teams gathering for the KC regional this weekend have already played.

Team# -- OPR
1986 --- 82.0
-118 --- 79.9
4522 --- 70.8
1806 --- 66.5
1810 --- 48.4
1939 --- 28.2
1764 --- 25.3
2164 --- 23.9

3 opportunities for a wildcard this weekend too.

1986 Regional Winner and RCA (Central Illinois)
118 Regional Winner (Alamo)
1939 RCA (Arkansas)
(4522 narrowly missed a 4th opportunity for KC, captaining the finalist alliance in Arkansas to near victory.)

On a completely different subject, my wife was looking for information about the regional. She found a site with a link to a map. When she followed it, it came up with the wrong MCC location in Kansas. When I followed it, I got a location in Omaha. It looks like it is searching by name rather than a hard coded address.

I'd hate to have anyone go to the wrong location. Since that is a usfirst.org website, is there a way that it could be fixed?

It seems to be working fine for me. I plug in either my work or home address, and it gives me directions to the correct place. Don't click on any of the recommendations when Google Maps opens up, type in the starting point address, and it should work fine.

But I agree, I think the actual address should be there instead.

It also works for me, using Chrome on Windows 7. What device and program did your wife use to find the map? One of the FLL coaches with whom I work had problems with the directions to our tournament in Kearney, MO. Both my computer & Android phone found the location correctly; on her iPhone both following the link in the email and plugging the address in directly took her to some unknown address in Kansas, about 60 miles away from Kearney.

Did you try a different device & get the same results?

Re: 2014 Greater Kansas City Regional

It's based on location. If you're far enough away from KC, you'll probably get some weird result from Google trying to match nearby businesses. It's telling me that the regional will be at a gas station on the west side of Manhattan.

Re: 2014 Greater Kansas City Regional

So after seeing the BBQ discussion on the waterloo regional I was curious what it was for Kansas City seeing we are a great BBQ town.

(If my numbers are correct, 1 mistake already)

GKC has:
2 Championship Division Wins (118-2)
1 4 time chairmans (932)
2 3 time chairmans (118,1987)
1 2 time chairmans (1986)
3 1 time chairmans (1730,1939,3172)
1 11 time winner (118)
1 8 time winner (1986)
1 6 time winner (935)
1 5 time winner (1806)
1 2 time winner (1730)
13 1 time winner (932,938,1775,1802,1810,1984,1987,1997,2345,2410,2 457,3528,3612)

58 teams are attending
62 Win or chairmans blue banners total for BBQ of 1.07 (58/62)
58 2005 and after for Sauce of 1 (58/58)
30 (or 31 not sure) 2011 and after for Briquette of .5 (30/58)

Always fun to play with numbers. ::safety::

I ate at OK Joe's today at lunch. Very good, but you happen to be wrong ;) -- Jack Stack is the best. Better beans, better sauces. As Neil deGrasse Tyson said last night on The Cobert Report -- Living in a country with free speech allows you to say whatever you want. It doesn't guarantee you are right.

Updated post above. Thanks for the catch. Unfortunately I deleted my data so I am not sure about the briquette value.

It is hard to really compare those values between events IMHO as some events have 60 teams and others 30. Interesting enough if you added 30 teams (total 60) to waterloo with zero wins or chairmans, they would still have a BBQ of 1.95. That event should be epic.

There are many proven winning teams and some up and comers attending GKC. It should be a great event.

I think at least one of the food trucks should be bbq, if not most of them. Someone want to call one of the restaurants up, see if they'll do it? We used to have bbq at Hale Arena, why not now?

Good luck to all the teams in KC this weekend. Wish I could make it, but I have too many tests this next week.

Also to open the stream in VLC instead of your browser: Media->Open Network Stream and insert the url: http://streaming.more.net/robomatcheslive

A picture of what I believe is the first GKC pairs skating event. In match 6 Team Titanium & Up Next got attached to each other -- one of our intake mechanums got caught in some tubing they use to stabilize their intake. The drive teams tried to separate the bots but the tubing wouldn't break, so they did several cycles driving together. It did make some of the assists easy, though :) The tubing eventually did break, and we won the match anyway.

Y'all, Cameron and Up Next, drove darn near flawlessly. The movement was so smooth, thats probably why it took so long to snap the line! That, in itself, is a great testament to the driving on both teams.

Also, CONGRATULATIONS Mr. Wood! Seeing you just stand and hug your team was so amazing and heartwarming.
