Beverage Company
What was the name of the Beverage Company that Dean was talking about at the Nationals? I could never figure it out. I want to look for FIRST on it.
|
I believe it was Faygo, which I spelled originally as Fago, but Wes gave me the correct spelling! They sell it at Marsh if you want to see what it looks like.
|
Yeah, it's National Beverage...who does Faygo...when I took a look at one a while back(a few weeks ago,) there wasn't anything FIRST on it yet...but knowing how those bottling plants run (I should know - I work for a similar company), even if the labels exist for the bottles, it'll take a while before they actually get on the market...have to get all the old ones used up first...
|
I believe the National Beverage Company also makes Shasta (this is from memory -- I looked it up shortly after nationals). My bet is that FIRST will make an appearance on Shasta and not Faygo but that's just my take on it. I get the feeling that FIRST will make an annoucement when it's released but keep your eyes open anyway.

shasta rootbeer and icecream
it does not get any better than that dahl |
i thought it was coke.
|
I've never heard of either shasta or faygo... Are these regional companies of some sort?
Patrick |
Shasta is an off-brand soda product. They have cola, root beer, lemon-lime, all your classic off brands. I know you can get it in Maryland but I'm not sure about elsewhere. They tend to come in cans if I remember correctly (I neither buy nor drink the stuff).
Faygo is an off-brand diet soda. They have a large variety of flavors, some of which are just plain odd. Occassionally my dad buys them (for my mom I believe, but I really don't know, I just see 'em in the fridge). Shasta comes in glass bottles (well, they were glass last time I checked). Just like the glass bottles Pepsi and Coke came in (not the real old glass bottles, the ones that came before our current plastic bottles). I have a feeling the FIRST logo will be on Shasta but that's just me. Maybe because I'm not too interested in Faygo. ;) If you want more information, do a search on Google for National Beverage Company. Matt |
We have Shasta here in LA. Like Matt said, it is a cheap alternative to the name-brand sodas. Ours only comes in aluminum cans (at least I've never seen Shasta in a bottle). We also have it in large plastic bottles. They look larger than the 2 liter bottles, but I've never checked the label.
We don't have Faygo, though. |
Faygo and Shasta
Faygo's big plant is in downtown Detroit about 1 mile south of Joe Louis Arena. They make about every flavor you can imagine, in both diet and regular. Shasta and Faygo are like Hellman's and Best Foods Mayonaise. Since they're made by the same company, you will never find them in the same area (the exception is if one doesn't have a certain flavor or that flavor is not available in diet under one of the brands).
(For those that don't understand the mayonaise reference, Hellman's and Best Foods mayo are the same company, they market under the name "Hellman's" east of the Mississippi and "Best Foods" west of the Mississippi. The reason for the different names is due to history and familiarity in the regions that they are sold in - they were originally different companies but were then bought out and merged. The same happened with Faygo and Shasta. In each case, the companies decided that it would be easier to have two set of labels than launch a big marketing campaign to reassociate people's brand familiarity.) |
I know you can get both Faygo and Shasta in Maryland. Well, I'm not precisely positive of that. I've only seen Faygo in Pennsylvania however this store was about 10 minutes from the Maryland line (from Maryland Line, Maryland actually). I've also only seen Shasta in Maryland itself but then again I haven't paid too much attention to it in the past.
Matt |
They're here in Alabama.
Faygo and Shasta are sold here in Huntsville, AL. Faygo has many different flavors including the basic soda flavors plus more. The Faygo's generally come in glass 16oz. bottles. They taste pretty good. I'll have to take a look and see if FIRST shows up on them.

Weird
I find it strange that National Beverage is competing with itself in some markets. When you see Faygo and Shasta together, are they the same flavors or do they have one brand to cover the flavors that the other brand doesn't have?
Shasta was sold in Michigan for about a 2 year period quite a while ago. When Faygo and Shasta merged (or one was bought out, whichever is the case), Shasta disappeared from Michigan and I have not seen it since. Since this time, I've never seen the two together in the same store except when one brand isn't carrying a particular flavor and the other brand is used to cover it. |
I don't think they really compete against each other. Shasta is just a generic knock off of name brand sodas. Faygo tends to be more "exotic." Faygo has all those bizarre and wierd flavors and I believe all Faygo is Diet. And they may have kept both in some areas because both did well and they didn't want to lose the branding they already had.
Matt who finds it funny that he's talking about off-brand sodas in a robotics forum.... |
faygo, but no shasta here...
i know we have faygo here in indiana, because that and milk were the only drinks they gave us at lunch in my middle school. lol..but i've never heard of shasta..
|
Whats Shasta look like?
I don't think I have ever heard of or seen. Does someone have a pic of it?
|
You got served Faygo in lunch????? Man are you guys lucky. All we had was milk and off brand cartons of some fruit stuff which was nasty. I don't think all Faygo's are diet. Faygo's are delicious, I like them. They are some of the only soft drinks they make in glass bottles. Thats strange. I see Shasta all over the place, I see shasta more than I see Faygo.
|
Website
I answered my own question. I look them up and they make more than Shasta and Faygo. Now we're going to have to look out for more products. Here is the main site for National Beverage Corp.
|
Beverage Company
In Virginia we occasionally have Shasta. I've never tried it so I don't know anything about it. The on;y reference I've ever heard to Faygo is from ICP (Insane Clown Possie). Has anyone ever tried either. Shasta is so rare here so I haven't tried it yet. If either are any good and the FIRST emblem shows up on them I'll start buyin' them when I see them.
C~ya, Carolyn who likes to try off brand stuff occasionlly for giggles and grins (it's like shopping at the thrift store). ;) |
Faygo and Shasta are similar
Faygo may have more "exotic" flavors. BUT, Faygo is known around here as the major "off brand". They make all of the standard flavors, like cola, root beer, mountain dew knock off, etc. THEY ARE NOT ALL DIET. In fact, in typical stores around here (Detroit, the home of Faygo), you can find about 3 times the flavors in regular than you can in diet.
|
I believe we only get Diet Faygo here. Which I guess is somewhat odd. I've had some of the diet sodas and they are fairly good but they're diet so.... ;)
Anyway, National Beverage Corporation isn't all good. They call everything pop so how could they be! ;) Matt |
Faygo Rocks (and Ryes)
Nothing beats Faygo's Rock and Rye flavor. And I was sure that Faygo's Redpop was famous around the world.
|
Shasta Rocks!
Shasta is present in Arkanasas. I remember drinking the Cream Soda when I was younger. It's really inexpensive in the store, like 30 cents a can. And the only way that I know that you can buy it is by single cans. That way you get to mix-n-match what flavors you want.
-becky |
We get Shasta in multipacks I believe. However, Faygo only comes singly here.
Matt |
Cool, I'm drinking Faygo during FIRST season next year.
Since National Beverage Company is a sponcer of FIRST, I think that will be the primary drink I drink during the FIRST season. There inexpensive too, thats the cool thing.:)
|
Speaking of Diet Faygo ...
... Kevin (kevin_308 who posted above) and I went out to lunch today for carry-out Thai food and I went to a party store next door to try and get some Diet Rock and Rye (as Kevin said, Rock and Rye is awesome -- I only drink diet these days since regular tastes funny in the same way the diet tastes funny to regular drinkers). To my dismay, they had about 10 Faygo flavors and not a single one of them were diet! Boy, was I disappointed.
By the way Matt, Kevin is standing here and says, "you drink 'pop' and you bake with 'soda' ". |
i dont think we have either here in ma...i could be wrong but i doubt it: i generally buy off brand soda (star cola at $0.89/3 liter bottle especially...) cuz they fit my budget
|
Let's get this straight...
1. I do believe that Shasta and Faygo are regionalized somewhat. I know that in North Central Arkansas, where I am orginally from, they only had Shasta, but then we got a Fred's discount store. Fred's sells Faygo. I also know that Faygo is popular in Memphis and Little Rock.
2. As far as the best and cheapest carbonated beverage, you can't go wrong with Sam's Choice from Wal-Mart. Seriously, it's good. 3. Carbonated beverages are neither pop, nor soda, where I'm from. It's coke in a general sense. For example: "Hey, do you want a Coke?!" "Sure. What kind do you have?" "We have Mtn. Dew, Dr. Pepper and Coke." "I'll take a Mtn. Dew." Just thought I'd fill you guys in... -becky |

Mike, who enjoys a big cup of ice water :) |
I never said that we weren't different. But remember different doesn't equal bad. Mike secretely wishes that he was from Arkansas. Trust me on this one.
-becky P.S. I also prefer water. One glass of Coke can keep me up all night. That should tell you something about how often I drink caffeine. Mike, the water at your house is the BEST! |
Coke?
Becky,
By 'One glass of Coke can keep me up all night', do you mean Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, or what. You're really vague. :) |
I apologize.
I didn't mean to confuse you, Chris. I was referring to one glass of Coke in the general sense, meaning any caffienated beverage. I told you that Coke could mean anything, but I prefer Vanilla Dr. Pepper.
-becky |
Keep the coke away from Becky then, she's bad enough NOT hyped up on caffeine. ;)
You most definatley drink soda and a balloon most definately goes "pop." More along those lines, Rochester, NY happens to be at about the dividing line of the Soda/Pop naming system. Everyone to the east says Soda, and everyone to the rest says Pop. So we had plenty of arguements about it at RIT last fall. ;) Matt |
Coke, pop, soda,... COLA!!!!!
Coke, pop, soda... I live in Virginia in a town full of people from all over. Some people say pop while others say other things depending on where they're from. My dad is from Ohio, where every word is pronounced a bit different, and my mom is from the south. I have many friends from various places who all say different things. The thing is, I don't ever know what to say. I came up with idea to just say cola. It works and every body gets to laugh, not just one group or another.
C~ya, Carolyn who is very confused about when to say what around which people. |
Cola would work.....but only when you're talking about Cola. ;) You still need t come up with something to represent, say, Sprite and 7-Up (Lemon-Lime? that's too long for me). There are others too. That's why it has to be soda. ;)
Matt |
Drink names
I call it Coke.
How about carbonated beverage or CO2 drink?:D |
In LA, we call it soda or coke, but pop is something the weasel does ;)
|
...
Soft Drink?....
TW?.... CS?.... Those are the terms I have heard, when people refer to the general carbonated beverage... |
Quote:
|
You could call the sprite, and wanna-bees, citrus or just be very specific. Say Pepsi or Coke, Sprite or Mtn. Dew, etc. That could solve the problem.
C~ya, Carolyn :) |
my grandmother calls it tonic...but no one else i know does
i always refer to it by its name: coke, pepsi, sprite, mountain dew, 7 up, star cola, etc.... |
Gotta have... sssssshhhasta!
Wasn't there a Shasta commercial about 10-15 years ago that went something like this:
Gotta have... Gotta have... Gotta have... Ssssssshhhhhasta! ... and there was this dorky guy running around in a Hawaiian shirt, shoving a Shasta can in the camera. I grew up on TV... waaaay too much. And I know that commercial. Anyone else out there with me? Andy B. |

Finally found a regular Shasta dealer (lol, FIRST drug)
I found a place that regularly sells Shasta near me!!!!!! The dollar store has started carrying the stuff, notice the lack of soda, pop, cola, etc. which could cause confusion, in 24 oz. bottles. It's even gonna be 3 for a dollar, really fits the budget of someone who's moving to Florida from Virginia and has very little money.
C~ya, Carolyn :p |
i want a shasta dealer...
or at least to try shasta... |
I think we should be very proud that the product of a sponsor of FIRST is sold in the dollar store. ;)
Matt who's waiting to see a GM product in the dollar store.... |
We have Shasta here in RI, but I've never heare of Faygo.
IMO, Shasta makes some of the best Creme Soda. |
