FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
I thought it'd be a cool idea if all of this year's seniors shared their college plans. Colleges you applied to, admission decision, and anything else you'd like to share would be awesome. I think it'd be pretty cool to see where the rest of the FRC Class of 2014 is going, myself included.
I guess I'll start: Applied: University of Notre Dame, Purdue University, SUNY Binghamton, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, U of Maryland, Northwestern University, Villanova University. So far, I've only received one decision: Purdue: Accepted So everyone, where are you hoping for!? |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
This is an awesome idea, should be cool to see where my fellow FIRSTers are going.
Applying to: Stanford (the one I really hope for), MIT, Princeton, Cornell, University of Colorado Boulder, Vanderbilt, Carnegie Mellon, WPI, Virginia Tech So far I've heard back from: None, but I should hear from WPI within the next few days EDIT WPI - admitted |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Whoa, thats an impressive list. Good Luck to everyone in their endeavours (118 reference)!

Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Im not graduating from this year but my friends in FRC who are graduating have applied for
UT dallas:accepted (full ride + extra) MIT: Put on normal admission UT Austin: (3/4 of ride) Rice: No word Baylor: (accepted) |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
This thread is a great idea.
Schools I was considering: Drexel University, Carnegie Mellon University, WPI, Rutgers University, Rowan University, Cedarville University. I ended up applying early decision to Grove City College for Electrical Engineering, and just received my letter of acceptance today. :D Grove City College is a smaller school, probably not well known around here, but they still have an excellent engineering engineering program in an outstanding environment. |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
I'm applying to the following schools:
MIT, University of Michigan (AA), University of Illinois (UC), University of Minnesota. Already got accepted to UMN, though it was kinda a gimme because I've been taking classes there for the last five years. EDIT: Also, mods probably want to move this to the colleges/universities section, where it would be a better fit. |

Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
I applied to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Sacramento State University, San Jose State University, and UC Merced. All for Computer Engineering. I know for sure that I'm going to apply to Embry-Riddle as well.
I'm strongly considering applying to WPI, I'm just not sure yet. Any insight from anybody that knows a lot about it and/or has been able to visit the campus? |

Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
My schools;
Cornell, Northwestern, University of Michigan, University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin, University of Maryland College Park, Rose-Hulman, and WPI. All big, cold, Northeast/Midwest colleges. Bring on that snow. |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Deferred at MIT.
Applying regular to Stanford, Princeton, Cal, UCSB, Cal Poly SLO, Boulder, Olin. I think schools have grown tired of seeing FIRST on a extracurricular list. It seems, for better or worse, to look very pedestrian and not very impressive on college apps. |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Not a HS student anymore but I am amazed at the number of folks applying to WPI. A bit curious if FRC's control system affiliation with them has any bearing on that decision?
As an RPI alumnus, surprised not to see as much enthusiasm for my alma mater. Both are good schools. WPI was sort of RPI's dark twin sibling across the state border whom we didn't interact with much. Ultimately, all that matters is what gives you the best opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills outside the classroom (ie internships!!!) |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Applying to U of T, Waterloo and U of C. Haven't decided if any US schools are worth it.

THE Longest List ever:
Purdue University Umass Amherst Umass Dartmouth Umass Lowell University of Rhode Island University of Southern Maine University of Maine University of Hartford University of Connecticut Central Connecticut State University Stevens Institute of Tech. Rochester Institute of Tech. Stony Brook University Western New England University Hofstra University I've been accepted to Central Connecticut, U of Hartford, and Hofstra. (No denials yet) Best part is 2 of the 3 have given me scholarship money!!! I had a below average GPA compared to all my colleges yet I have still received money mostly due to my FIRST experience. Hofstra even included a stick note citing my robotics for the reasoning for acceptance and scholarship. |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Application List:
University of Florida Georgia Institute of Technology WPI MIT CalTech Harvard Stanford Olin Cornell Columbia Carnegie Mellon Princeton No results yet, except a deferral from MIT. It's really got me bogged down, I feel like I'm not getting into college now :P |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
After seeing a lot of students list "Boulder" as one of their colleges, and having gotten a countless number of emails from them in the last few months, I decided to check the school out. And I'm glad I did. It looks like a very great school to me, I think I'll apply!

I am applying to most of the University of California schools:
UC Berkeley (#1) UC Davis UCLA UC Santa Barbara UCSD UC Santa Cruz I am also applying to Cal Poly SLO and San Jose State. I guess you could say I am a California boy! I'm applying as an Electrical Engineering major, and may also include Purdue and University of Illinois on my list. |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Wow, those are some long lists. As for me, I've only applied to one college so far, and that is Oregon State University. (OSU)
It has been my first choice for quite a while now, and I was just accepted a few days ago so I can be pretty sure when I say I'll be going to OSU for Manufacturing Engineering. Very excited! |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Shameless plug for Rose-Hulman to anyone whose looking for a top-tier engineering school without the giant state-school feel.
I too (Class of 2013) applied to a ton of the big Midwest schools (Michigan, U of I, Georgia Tech, WPI, Carnegie, etc). What really drew me to Rose, however, was the small, tight-knit community, much like FIRST. It's also been consistently ranked as one of the top engineering school in the country for the past 15 years*, and I can attest that you'd be getting a great education here. If anyone has any questions about Rose, feel free to PM me as well. It's most definitely not too late to apply, they work on a rolling admission process. *#1 engineering school for universities without a doctorate program per US News and World Report |

Libby is absolutely correct. Clarkson has an incredibly unique setup for our FIRST mentors. Aside from Team 229, which is comprised of about 50 HS students from 2 schools, 2 HS teachers, and 20ish active Clarkson mentors (did I mention our shop space is at Clarkson too?), we have a suite-style dormitory for FIRST Alumni and Mentors. Currently our housing is a single floor with 20 students (12 freshmen and 8 sophomores), but we have plans to occupy up to 3 floors next year with 60 total students. Each dorm room holds two people and is connected to one other room through a bathroom (2 people per room, 4 per bathroom). All the rooms face inward toward a central lounge which has (among other things) a 60" TV, a workstation computer, many laptops, some field components, and whiteboards for studying/mentoring. Our residents are not only FRC mentors, but also JFLL, FLL, and FTC mentors on the weekends. We provide coaches clinics (our students coach other local adult coaches) to 18 FTC teams and 24 FLL teams, host our own FTC and FLL tournaments and scrimmages, and even travel around Northern NY in our robotics van doing demonstrations with quadcopters, FRC robots, humanoid robots, etc. Feel free to PM Libby or myself with any questions you might have. |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
I originally considered Clarkson, but I don't know if I could handle the Canadiens fans (Go Bruins!)

Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
MTU, great choice. There's like two feet of snow outside right now, broomball and winter carnival can be a lot of fun, and there are local teams that you can mentor.

Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Just wanted to mention I'm stunned that no one's mentioned Northeastern University!! So, I'll have to take a couple minutes to try to remedy that by tooting my school's horn! ;-)
They're usually a popular school for FRC students, with their competitive Engineering education, top-notch co-op program, and significant involvement with FRC... 125 (the NUTRONS, a great team in terms of both robots and impact) are based there and they've hosted Beantown Blitz for 8+ years and will now be hosting the Northeastern District Event! It's a great school that's only been getting better and better over the past 5, 10, and 20 years! I very highly recommend applying! The big selling points for me were their passionate and friendly faculty, great engineering programs, excellent co-op program, and location in Boston... these elements have all proved every bit as great as I thought they would. Really though, the co-op program is what I have to focus on... Northeastern's partnered with hundreds of great companies (GE, Apple, BAE Systems, Raytheon, QinetiQ, DEKA, Farm PD, Keurig, Johnson + Johnson, Kiva Systems, to name a few) and provide really great opportunities doing real work in Engineering that will pay well too. These companies send a list of job descriptions to Northeastern every year for positions for NEU co-ops to fill... your co-op advisor will work with you throughout the whole co-op hunt process... NEU has high enough demand for their co-ops that they have 100% co-op placement in Engineering! So, give at least some consideration to Northeastern... I really doubt you'll regret it! |

If students want some feedback about Drexel, feel free to message me. There are quite a lot of FIRST alumni there that I could put you in touch with. I personally didn't enjoy it there, and now am at Syracuse University, but many others have enjoyed their time at Drexel.
Plus, I helped start team 3929, which is close by. There are a couple other teams in the city as well I can connect people with, such as 4454. Best of luck! And let me know if any of you will be in Syracuse :) |

Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Though I have not completed applications for all colleges, just reviewing the information from my favorites, I have started believing (almost) that college admission is mostly luck. There is no guarantee that anyone person will definitely get into a good college. It’s not just about GPA (subjective depending on the school, city and state you attend), it’s not about SAT/ACT scores (they vary from test to test), it’s not definitely about extracurricular activities or interview or the Essay! Well you need to have decent scores and GPA, you are expected to have participated in diverse activities, some of them must be focused to your interest, you are expected to show leadership, not in just one activity and what not! From early middle school I focused on Engineering, just because my brain is hardwired to building and programming. Did Flash animation, not a good artist, but had fun making stick man do crazy stuff, build structures and competed in Destination Imagination, once got 2nd place in Nationals, unbelievable achievement for my school district. Did FLL went to Nationals, 2nd team (of the 3) from my city to go to Nationals ever, then joined FRC! Did Science Olympiad for many years. Had no time to join student association or year book clubs, did not do competitive sports, I play for fun though. Did not join drama club, dropped out of quiz bowl after couple of years. Barely got the sleep during school days (no not video games), just the home work, school projects and managing FRC stuff. Now I am applying for Engineering, thinking dedication to FRC would give me some advantage compared to non-FRC applicants. Standing with thousands for students some are like me and others slightly different, not knowing which college will accept my application… I am beginning to wonder if my decision to pursue engineering related activities will really help me in my college admission. Would joining DECCA or quiz bowl or heading student group or becoming editor-in-chief of school paper or taking up summer job, had given me a better chance? I am keeping my fingers, hands and legs crossed and waiting patiently. If nothing works out, will join local college and start my own FRC team…know enough to do that confidently!

Yes, it is very true that WPI has a Robotics Engineering (RBE) major (it is a great program. Feel free to PM me if you want), but the words of one of the people I talked to continues to ring true to this day: Don't go to WPI for the RBE Major, go for the WPI Plan. That is to say, there are other schools that offer similar programs, but WPI is unique that it is very hands on and project based. My finals week consists of more work on projects than studying. I have definitely enjoyed my time at WPI so far, as I am sure many potential students may, just do not remember that the college experience is more than just classes. Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
This is too funny, only because that was exactly my list, 34 years ago. I was a NM semifinalist with an A average, but too lazy to write an essay. When I found out that MSU didn't require an essay, and they had what looked like a nice honors program, I applied, was accepted, and that was that. 4 years later I had my Biochemistry/Physiology degree, and set off into the wide world. Go Moo U! (I hear they also have a pretty good video game development program now, so I've tried to get my son to apply, but he's not interested in anything east of Colorado.)
FYI, I later became a computer programmer, then went to law school, and am now a very happily self-employed lawyer on Kauai, and mentor of the Kauaibots (go 2465!). SO I had to laugh out loud when I read this list! By the way, my son has applied to USC (his first choice), UC Santa Cruz, University of Denver, UH Manoa (total safety), and Digipen. He wants to do game programming. Was going to apply to Harvey Mudd but decided that his chance of getting in is miniscule. And who am I to fight him when he says he doesn't want to write more essays? ;-) No responses yet.... Quote:

Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
Applied:
Kettering University (accepted) Michigan Tech (accepted w/ scholarship offer) University of Michigan Going out of state was definitely out of my price range, but there's tons of great engineering schools that are local. Michigan and Michigan Tech are definitely preferred to Kettering (unless I get a massive scholarship) because they're public and subsequently much more affordable. U of M is my top choice because I love the honors colleges and programs, plus my twin sister wants to go into Kinesiology and we want to stay together. There's not many schools that have great programs for both, but U of M is one of them. To make a point about FIRST on applications: FIRST is THE reason I'm going to get accepted and excel in the university of my choice. I've been fortunate enough to work on a great team and learn tons of things about engineering, leadership, and what I want to do with my life. My networking through FIRST landed me a college level engineering internship before graduating high school, which is a definite bonus. However, the way you portray your FIRST experience dictates how colleges will view it. Play it up; what we do is inspirational and important, but we're not just a group of nerds playing with robots: we're the future. In addition, it's not just about the concrete skills you gain. The moments that have influenced me the most haven't come behind the glass or at a presentation: they've been working, teaching, and inspiring fellow students, younger kids, and being inspired by my mentors. I really tried to express that in my essays. To be fair, grades and test scores are still important. I think people (especially us, as we're in the application process) think FIRST is getting watered down on college apps, but you have to consider the schools that high-caliber FIRST kids are applying to. When I saw this list, I was blown away! I considered applying to Purdue, Notre Dame, Olin, and a few other colleges, but nothing compared to the long lists of prestigious universities most of you guys applied to. Keep in mind that MIT is still MIT, Stanford is still Stanford, and that your acceptance status doesn't dictate who you are as a person. |

Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
I'm glad to see a few Kettering University applicants. It is a great school with a co-op program that is unique and outstanding.
I saw some concern about pricing since it is a private school. Because of this, Kettering is paired up with some of the best engineering companies in the nation (especially the automotive industry) in order to provide scholarships and financial aid. Almost every student that attends Kettering wins a merit scholarship. Kettering also has a fixed tuition guarantee, what you pay your first freshman term is what you pay your last term. http://www.kettering.edu/admissions/...hip-calculator If you have any questions about Kettering University, feel free to pm me. Background: Mechanical Engineering Senior at Kettering University, employed at TRW Occupant Safety Systems as a Seatbelt Hardware Engineer. Also: B-Section stands for Better Section :P (only kidding) |
Re: FIRST Class of 2014, Where are we going?
