Also I think they are hinting at baseball too much in the blog. This leaves 1 and 3, both i think are highly plausible. On another note, the abstract hinting at Dr. Who could mean something, but what would be a game that comes from that (obviously cant base game on too much previous knowledge of show cause that would make it too confusing). Also, in the picture's background i see what looks like 2 upward opening 3's towards what looks like a giant mushroom? idk... |

1. Encoding Process - Baseline DCT. In baseball, each base is connected by a white baseline. The bases are places where the runner cannot be tagged out. This could mean there could be a zone where robots from another alliance cannot contact robots in that specific zone.(Think of the protected feeder stations and pyramids from Ultimate Ascent.) 2. Exif byte order - Big-endian(Motorola,MM) In this one, the word "big" stands out the most. This could potentially mean that some aspect of the game is larger than past. This could hint to larger game pieces, larger alliances, or a longer match. There are many possibilities with this one. 3. Compression - JPEG(old style) Compression is a way of making an image's file size smaller. Therefore we may have to build smaller robots this year. This is further supported by the 25% weight limit sign that we had come across earlier. Before an image is compressed, the file size is much larger than after it is compressed. This hints to the possibility of certain objectives requiring a robot to either increase or decrease in size. Something else to pay attention to is the use of an older form of JPEG compression. This could be telling us that some aspects of the game may be 'borrowed' from a previous FRC or FTC game, as the term 'old-style' is used. |

Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
Lately, we have made several connections to aircraft, as well as baseball and football. Combining these connections together, we can speculate that we will be required to shoot game pieces through the air. Baseballs, footballs, and airplanes travel in some sense, through the air. Therefore, we may be flinging game pieces this year, which will present a decent design challenge, as we have seen in past games.

Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
I am guessing the details on the photo description are just to describe the photo. I am sure they wrote that there are no game hints in the photo because they knew that a photo like that at this time of year would raise suspicion from people like us. I think they just wanted to post a picture of them filming the kickoff video. However, the one bit of info the picture will tell us towards the game is that there are likely game hints in other pictures or blog posts, as I think (someone more experienced can back this up) there have been in the past. Trying to make connections from that picture that are likely pure coincidence or just normal filming studio conditions (ie. water bottle triangles or green screens) is getting us nowhere.

We have wayyyy to many ideas for this year. Let's hope its one of them. Back to interpretations.
|
Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
Regarding the Kickoff filming picture. I really don't think it's worth our time trying to interpret it as a game hint. They did say that there is no game clue in the photo. Do we really want to stoop low enough to assume that FIRST would blatantly lie about that fact? They specifically stated that there is no clue. I am going to believe it and think about other sources of information such as the blog post title "2014 Game Hint"
That's my opinion. |
Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
Last year we were at least trying to interpret the right game hint. And we had some sense of direction with that poem.
This year we have like fifty different directions, and they're all flimsy. I don't think we're going to get any further with this one. I love game hint speculation, but some of this is ridiculous sounding for EVEN the GDC. |
Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
What's the consensus on Andy Baker's baseball video at this point? I'm feeling like the bulk of the evidence (including that video and the other statements from first and andymark) is pointing in the direction of a baseball-related game. I will also point out that the first thing I noticed about "The Photo" is that the green screen reminds me of the Green Monster. The official hint seems likely to be about weight limits in one way or another, and unrelated to the "theme". So...
If it is baseball, how do you think it could be played? I'm not inclined to think that the only baseball-like part of the game would be the size of the balls; that's too much like Aim High. If it's hitting or striking balls, that might be an interesting challenge. Baseball, by it's nature, is slow moving, which doesn't fit very well with FRC's style. How do you imagine the sport might be modified or adapted to make it a viable FRC game? I don't have very many answers at this point, and I realize that whatever we imagine, it probably won't turn out to be correct. Still I'd love to see what you all think might be possible. Thanks! |
Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
@FRCTeams just tweeted this:
Yes...kind of RT @2767StrykeForce: Less than a week until kickoff! Has anyone figured out the hint? #omgrobots In my opinion this is the FRC telling us that someone, in some thread read by them, is on the right track. I propose we go back through past suggestions no matter how unusual and make sure we didn't push something aside that was somewhat correct. |

Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
Going with the idea of baseball and the 25% weight reduction, going from a softball to a baseball is a 25% weight reduction.
A softball can range in size anywhere from 6.25 to 7 oz. The largest weight I found online was 7 oz. A standard Major League Baseball weighs between 5 and 5.25 oz. So if you take the largest possible size of the two balls, 7 and 5.25 oz. that is EXACTLY a 25% weight reduction. So could this mean we must score both baseballs and softballs into goals? Or maybe we'll play baseball with specific softball rules? I'm not familiar with softball rules, they may be the same as baseball. Anyway... this is too much of a coincidence to just pass up. |

Or perhaps softballs are the endgame but have special rules. I've followed baseball for a while and yeah, the rules don't differ very much except with regards to pitching (baseball is any way you want, softball has to be underhand) so maybe there's limits on how we can launch the balls?

the fact of the sign saying that the weight limit is reduced tells us that we will have to create, or be in, a certain equilibrium with the game environment. it just might be a water game where we all have to float our robots ( we'll have to see how that works out). another idea going around is that it might be a lunar/moon based theme. I was thinking that the reduced weight would be required if we were being hanged from something, as if trying to simulate zero gravity. or the theme could be an underwater astronaut training facility (just throwing that out there). |

61126 shifted 2 left becomes 12661 and 62326 shifted 2 left becomes 32662. This tells me it's a cipher and that these are not equations. Edit: Seems like everyone else noticed it too. |
Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
The first set of numbers was the "iffy" one [edit: not "presumably", that's what he said], because it has been entirely changed. For the other two, the order of the digits in the first number was changed, but '1963' and '15806' were not changed at all.
So, we know they're NOT: -ZIP codes -Ratios -Coordinates |
Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
Using the idea that the first number (EDIT: Of each pair) is a date, I searched June 14, 1974, December 6, 1961 (Could be January 26, '61 however), and March 26, 1962.
Those dates yielded some interesting results. June 14th '74 was the date Nolan Ryan stuck out 19 Red Sox in 12 innings. December 6, 1961 was the day the Heisman was awarded in that particular year. March 26 1962 was the birthday of several athletes, covering Baseball, basketball and soccer, and was the day the inventor of wax paper died. January 26, 1961 (the alternative option to Dec 6 61) was the day Elvis Presley's hit "Are you lonesome tonight?" peaked to #1, and is the birthday of Hockey great Wayne Gretzky. Lots of references to sports. |

Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
Hey all! Sorry if any of this has been seen already, but a bunch of things just clicked in my head and I want to get them out
I knocked the ratios down to decimal numbers, and I got(assuming I did my math right): 455.36, 6.45, and 2.07 Since there are 3 numbers, they could not possibly be used for coordinates, so I had to think, 'what else could we use these decimal numbers for?'. Then I saw the Dr Who image, so I started thinking about Tennant's run. Then I thought about The Library. The Dewey Decimal System. Looking up those numbers, this is the categories that they reference: 455.36: Basic Grammar, specifically, Italian (probably irrelevant, that last bit) 6.45 is acoustical pattern recognition, and the only classification in the DDS below that is Speech Recognition (!!!!!). Consider the new abilities of the Microsoft Kinect 2.0 (then again, it is built into the system so...) 2.07 was just meta-book stuff. Not sure what to make of it. So there's that. I might be way off, but it's something at least, right? |
Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint
