When Are Points Actually Scored?

I realize that this may just be a given and I missed it, but I was wondering about point scoring. Whenever points are shown as being earned in a situation from an assist, truss toss, or catch, they are shown as being added on to the points from scoring into a goal. In this manner it looks to me that the points are added on as bonuses (and they are referred to as so a couple of times) to the regular goal score, rather than added points. Are they counted once they happen, or once the ball is scored into a goal? The ball has to be cycled through anyways, but what if the game ends before the cycle is complete? Are the assist, truss toss and catch points earned anyways, or not because the cycle wasn't completed?

Points are only awarded when a cycle is completed

IE: The ball is scored.

3.1.4 Scoring

Points are awarded once per CYCLE for BALLS SCORED by ROBOTS in the GOALS, BALLS SCORED by ROBOTS over the TRUSS, and for each ROBOT CATCH. Additional points are credited to an ALLIANCE upon each GOAL based on the number of ASSISTS earned by the ALLIANCE for that CYCLE.

As far as i can tell, it just shows what bonuses are active. Assist bonuses wouldn't be scored until the ball itself is scored since. I believe the truss toss and catch are independent of actually scoring the ball so those might be added as soon as they occur.

This seems right. I figured it was for a cycle, but lots of people seemed to be saying otherwise. Thanks!

Only the bonus ASSIST points are awarded upon scoring. TRUSS and CATCH points seem to be awarded instantly.

I understand that catch and truss points are scored as they occur but all other points are scored when the ball goes through the goal.

This is the rule, but the wording confuses me.

It seems that balls scored by robots over truss and robot catch are separate from the balls scored by robots in goals.

This rule
Quote:

A BALL is considered SCORED over the TRUSS if a ROBOT causes a BALL to pass though the infinitely tall plane that is bounded by the top of the TRUSS and the TRUSS POLES toward the ALLIANCE’S GOALS (e.g. a red BALL towards the red GOALS). This plane is depicted in yellow in Figure 3-3.
seems to indicate that the ball is scored when it goes over truss.

I don't know, thats just how I read it.

I agree that it's rather vague, and I expect it to be asked in the Q&A.

This was my interpretation as well, but I do hope for some clarification.

yeah, my interpretation is that Truss & Catch points are awarded as they happen. Assist points are a bonus to the GOAL score. Had different views throughout my team about this today, hopefully FIRST will clear it up soon.

ALLIANCEs earn one bonus for each BALL SCORED in a GOAL based on the number of ASSISTS in that CYCLE. The corresponding points for accrued ASSISTS are as follows:
For the bonus to be counted, the BALL must be SCORED in a GOAL. Although CATCH and TRUSS are "base" points, they are not a GOAL and thus do not accrue the bonus.

Quote:

SCORED: the state of a BALL in which it has accrued points for an ALLIANCE.

Therefore it seems to me that TRUSS and CATCH points are awarded immediately (SCORED) after the ball passes through the infinite plane and is caught by another robot. The assist bonus is not awarded (or in the words of this year's manual, accrued) until a ball is SCORED through a GOAL.

Re: When Are Points Actually Scored?

Another thing that makes me think the truss and catch points are award instantaneously is the fact that the assist points have plus signs (+) in front of their scoring and the truss/catch points don't.

Speaking of which, how exactly is that done? I've never seen how before, and I'd like to be able to clear up a couple of things if possible.
