Sad news

As some of you may know, today there was a shooting at Purdue University.

Sadly, one student was killed. That student was Andrew Boldt, a Team 1732 Alumni.

Please keep his friends and family in your prayers.

RIP.

Re: Sad news

For those who never met him, Andrew (Drew, never Andy) was a FIRST enthusiast and a quality friend. There is no sense in his death.

A short bio from his former teammate Katie B:
"Today, FRC Team 1732 Hilltopper Robotics lost our alum Andrew Boldt, the victim of today's Purdue University tragedy. Please keep him, his family, and our team in your prayers in this very tough time. He was a dedicated team member for four years, leading the electrical sub-team for two. A promising engineer as well as a role model for our community, he has always been an inspiration to those he met and will be missed dearly by all."

He was so close to graduation. Its not fair.

Re: Sad news

For those unfortunate enough to never meet Drew, he was the embodiment everything FIRST stands for. His freshman year he really wanted to join the robotics team but his parents wanted him to focus on school, so he just became a key member of one of our fall VEX teams. He was the electrical subteam leader for his junior and senior seasons, when he played a huge rule in our breakout 2010 season. Since graduating, he always kept in contact with the team. At the Boilermaker Regional the past two seasons, he would give personal tours to our students, not only showing them the school, but showing where FIRST can take them. He would always take time to tell the mentors about his quad helicopter project or his work on efficient engines during his summer internships. Drew was destined to be a great success and was already a shining example of where FIRST can take an individual.

Thank you for all the thoughts, kind words and prayers during this difficult time. We are reminded that FIRST really is a community, a family, and your support is so dear as we try to grasp the tragic loss of our good friend and teammate Andrew “Drew” Boldt. Kind. Genuine. Appreciative. Talented. Diligent. With seemingly boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm that never faltered, Drew was, and is, a role model who epitomized FIRST in every way. He was the son every dad wishes he had. During the days the team struggled, Drew kept Team 1732 going, always working, never giving up. A "do-er" and a giver, and one of the nicest persons you could ever meet, he was highly accomplished, yet he had so much ahead of him. He will be missed greatly and deeply.

Re: Sad news

Purdue student here.

In case anyone has not been keeping up with the news, the man responsible was quickly detained by the very efficient Purdue Police Department. You can read a timeline here.

I struggle finding the best words here, but it's hard to fully realize what happened today, especially considering how close we all were to the incident. You never think it will happen in your area until it does. I still am struggling to realize this happened. I especially sympathize for people I know who were in the same building, one even in the same classroom.

I didn't know him personally, but I have read and heard many accounts of him being a truly good man. I hope that for whomever knows him personally can find some solace. Many Purdue networks have reached out with their condolences and calls for solidarity.

Around 8:00 P.M. tonight, Purdue held a candlelight service in Memoriam. It was beautiful yet bittersweet to see the Purdue Community come together like that.

I'm struggling to continue writing this, so I'll end with this:

My thoughts and prayers go out to all who are affected.

Boiler Strong.

This reminds me of the shooting on Virginia Tech after the 2007 championship and the first thing I thought was if any of the kids from FRC 401 the Hokie Guard were victims being it was in the engineering building. Fortunately they were ok. Sadly this time it's not the case. Blessing to the friends and family of the victim.

Team 1730 passes along their condolences. Even though we may not have met him, we know the bind that FIRST has on the students. This is like losing a member of our family. We wish his family the strength to get through this horrible tragedy. I hope the one who did this is remorseful for taking such a young, promising life.

Re: Sad news

Having experienced first-hand the resolve the Purdue community shows in the face of gun violence, I know Drew's memory will be sustained and cherished.
I'm also glad that Purdue was the site of many good experiences for 1732 - in 2012 alone they earned RCA, Innovation in Control, and DLF there.
The entire Purdue community, current students, faculty, staff, and alumni, stand with you - as does the Big Ten.
There's no question Drew was loved, respected, and admired by his peers and those that didn't even know him. My thoughts and prayers to all whose lives Drew touched.
