I believe we had a gear in the gearbox for our drive last year that VEX didn't offer as a dog gear (they now offer it this year). So we did the same thing you did here. We did not have a single issue with our gearbox last year so I think you'll be fine.

Hard anodize will have zero benefit on those surfaces with the number of cycles you will see in FRC.

Thank you guys. That's what I figured anyway, but wanted reassurance from someone who has done it.

As for how we held them, we made a fixture plate with a protrusion that had a nice fit on the gear counter-bore. We then had a bolt pattern around the outside diameter of the gear and clamped it down with the head of the screws. You can see in the teeth of the gear where we clamped. We did multiple holes so we can put the same pocket on any size gear up to 60 teeth using the same fixture.
