It's just used to weigh down our robot and keep our COG low. Ballast is basically just dead weight. A ballista, on the other hand, is a giant crossbow mounted on a turret. Pretty large difference. :D

Unlike last year, we're bagging our whole robot.

Oh, I see, then I know a lot about those.

*cough* 50 pound bag of chain last year *cough cough*

Bagging and tagging a running/driving 6 CIM base with rotating assembly.

45 lb withold is the 270 degree rotating turret that mounts on top, so that we can mount it on the second running/driving 4 CIM base with rotating assembly for practice.

Turret comes off with 4 bolts. (plus 1 air line and 4 solenoids worth of PWMs), and is installed in the same way.

noun
noun: ballast; plural noun: ballasts

1.
heavy material, such as gravel, sand, iron, or lead, placed low in a vessel to improve its stability.
Or potentially, in this case, to improve traction.

Note in FRC if you are using lead as a ballast it must be encapsulated and at no time should you shave, cut, drill, grind or intentionally do anything that could create lead particles or dust. It also can not be an additional battery even if it is not electrically connected to the robot.

Bagging ... basically everything, maybe even the bumpers. Everything's working, and the subsystems don't really separate well.

Were tweaking and fixing things with our robot today and were gonna be bagging and tagging a completed robot for the first time ever tomorrow. We are a rookie team so this is our first year having a completed robot to enter for competition.

We're bagging the drivetrain but keeping the board, shooter, and pickup, along with pneumatic parts associated with that. Our pneumatics aren't controllable yet

The whole shabang is getting bagged and crated the old fashioned way tonight. Ships out to Texas tomorrow afternoon. Good luck to everyone especially if you lost more than a week like 422 did.

I feel kind of bad as a team taking advantage of the 45 pound extention limit, since here in California we don't get anything near snow...
But only kind of bad. :p

Re: What are you bagging and tagging?

Bagging the KOP drivetrain with 6 CIM gearboxes, electronics, and some frame attached.
Withholding both our manipulators, if we can get that and a frame under 45 pounds combined we'll bring that and replace the bagged frame pieces since its rather heavy and messy.

Is it standard practice to detach CIMs and PG gearboxes from withheld parts and reattach them at the competition? Our motors have not been modified mechanically but the leads are crimped.

We just bagged our drive base (6 CIM, Pnuematics) w/out bumpers. We're hoping to finish and perfect <45 pounds of shooter and loader.

We bagged a functional robot.

...without our entire arm assembly (which currently weighs around 30 lbs).
