2014 Orlando Regional

After Premiere night last night which I did watch completely for the most part. I have to say, echoing a lot of other people, Orlando is going to be stacked. Really stacked.

This will be my second trip to the land of oranges, first time with 1102 in 2010, and now with my rookie team 4901. I was there in spirit last year for 1772, but not there in body.

I'm excited to say we should be in pretty good condition by Orlando considering we will be competing at Palmetto Week 1. I'm really, really, really excited for this year's event!

Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Centere is having The Robot Rocket Rally event March 14-16, which overlaps with the Orlando Regional. If you have any energy left on Sunday the 16th, this seems worth checking out
Quote:

See examples of NASA-developed robots, discover how robotic technology benefits mankind, meet working robots, hear from robotics experts and even operate a robot. Included with daily admission

The three-day event features a robotic expo with hands-on exhibits and games showcasing the latest in robotic and engineering technology. The study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is at the heart of Robot Rocket Rally, with exhibitors ranging from middle school robotics clubs to veteran NASA scientists and engineers.

List of speakers

List of robots being demonstrated

Looks like both FLL and FTC will be represented at the event.

Does anyone have any of the wire clip connectors for the Honda Civic Window Motors we get from FIRST Choice. I'm looking at getting some off first choice but in case I don't get them in time it's always good to have a backup plan. We're using window motors on our newly implemented floor pickup.

My old head mentor from 1102 always had a hard time finding them for us, he ended up having to go to a junk yard to get them for some reason or another. I think it was because he had a hard time installing the wires into them.

As quick as they can. Producing and editing videos on the fly is not an easy task. However, they do the best they can and we appreciate the volunteer work they do to get these videos on line.

Having those match videos available on Friday night was the most helpful things scouting wise that I've ever seen. Last years Orlando Regional was so amazingly documented, I'm glad that will be happening again.

Nah I understand. Y'all did amazing last year; I think last year you guys had matches up something like 30-45 minutes after the match happened. And like Staxis said, you cannot get any better scouting help than that. To add to that the quality to which they are done, you guys are the best.

624 is extremely excited to be going to Orlando, and from all these programs and other cool things (any match video at all alone is amazing) seems to be very well run and helpful for teams to learn. However, one seemingly off topic question...is the venue the main court of the UCF Arena or is it a smaller or practice court? I.E, is this an accurate image of the venue http://colleges.niche.com/images/sta...492/?v=083ACD8

It is the main floor of CFE Arena. The pits are directly adjacent in the practice arena.(the old UCF arena which used to house the Florida Regional)

Congratulations on your win at the Alamo and I am looking forward to seeing you in Orlando.

The Orlando Regional, in my opinion, is about as close as one can get to the look and feel of the Championships from the venue to the quality of the teams.

You can find a site layout and pit map here:

http://www.orlandofrc.org/events2014.html

From the looks of it, y'all have a good spot.

Safe travels and see you in a few days!

We're excited to have our pit neighbors back! (Assuming no more accidents! *knock on wood*). And on the other side, it looks like 624 has the best pit in the venue. If either of you (or anyone) needs anything, just stop by and we'll see what we can do. Good luck teams!

Re: 2014 Orlando Regional

Thanks to the Orlando Regional Planning Committee, RoboVisionOD will again be providing “1st Robot Videos … On Demand” for the Orlando Regional this year. Match videos will now be in full 720p HD. A single wide angle lens camera will provide view of the whole field at all times. The HD format will help with scouting and you can keep track of your favorite teams without cut away to other robots. Our goal is to upload the videos within ten minutes after each match completion. A new offering this year is an Android app on the Google Play Store called RoboVisionOD. Firsters can down load the app and watch the videos on their mobile Android devices. You can also check out our website http://www.RoboVisionOD.com to view match scores, stats, schedules and Full HD videos anywhere, on your phone or on the computer. Other non-Android mobile devices, such as iPhones and Windows Phones, should still be able to watch the matches through the website http://www.RoboVisionOD.com

Thanks to the EngiNERDs Team 2337, the RoboVisionOD app is also available for some of the Michigan District events this year. Our goal for the app this year is to provide “1st Robot Videos … On Demand” for the following events: Orlando Regional, South Florida Regional, Southfield Regional, Kettering University Regional, St. Joseph Regional, and Troy Regional.

Please download the app and visit our website. As always, please let us know what works and what doesn’t as we continue to improve on the technology.

I really like how they placed the rookie pits right in the center of the oldest teams in FIRST FLA's pits. I don't know how long they've been doing that, but nonetheless it's awesome.

If any teams need anything printed, (black and white only), come by 4901's pit and talk to me. I know I had several teams come by and take advantage of it at Palmetto. I will also print strategy maps out for any team that wishes to utilize them. We love them as they help us form better strategies from match to match with our alliance partners.

(Having competed once already I'm glad to let you all know that 4901 has never incurred a tech foul.....ever.)

The scheduling thing is a funny thing--us South Carolina teams used to go to other events as a warmup for Palmetto, but now that they're Week 1 that's blown wide open.

At Orlando, there are only five teams that have competed already this year:

624 (Alamo, Champions, Chairman's, 10-0, 1st seed)
1772 (Palmetto, Quarterfinals, 6-3, 12th seed)
1876 (Palmetto, Quarterfinals, 9-0, 2nd seed)
4451 (Palmetto, Not Picked, 3-6, 53rd seed)
4901 (Palmetto, Not Picked, 3-6, 48th seed)

I haven't seen 624 (I suppose their Alamo run speaks for itself), but all four Palmetto-going robots were running pretty well as they were bagged. 1772's has been in good hands since Palmetto, and I know 4901's going to use a lot of that withholding allowance with improvements to the loading mechanism on top of a solid truss shooter. 4451 surely has an ace in the hole to get back to the finals (you never know what's going to roll out of the garage!), and while I don't have a source on 1876, they're right there on the beach and can't be that worried about anything. :)

One thing to note also, that usually there is a rocket/shuttle launch some time during the regional. This year, the only one happens at 4:41 AM on Sunday morning. SpaceX is launching their Falcon 9 rocket for a resupply mission to the ISS; if you guys are still in the state, in the area, and aren't too pooped after Saturday, I would recommend catching it if you've never seen a launch. Its still pretty dang visible even this far inland.

Here is a little teaser, the bio of one of the women who is participating on the Women in STEM panel:

Linda Flannery graduated from UCF’s College of Engineering in 1986 earning a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering and in 1993 earning Master’s degree in Computer Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. She worked in several industries including Aeronautics, Telecommunications, Network Management, Database development and Cloud computing. She started at Stromberg Carlson in Lake Mary and worked for several startup companies in roles ranging from Software Engineer, Team Leader, Director, Consultant, Contractor and currently President of Imagine Solutions. She has received awards for professionalism, service, and leadership throughout her career.
Mrs. Flannery volunteers with the UCF College of Engineering and Computer Sciences Alumni chapter, Expanding Your Horizons, YMCA local and national teen programs, church programs, and most recently was awarded the Girl Scouts’ Women of Distinction Leadership award.
She met her UCF KNIGHT in shining armor during her last semester at UCF. They are married and have a 6th grade son who is most definitely an engineer at heart!

And that's only one!

SpaceX is launching their Falcon 9 rocket for a resupply mission to the ISS; if you guys are still in the state, in the area, and aren't too pooped after Saturday, I would recommend catching it if you've never seen a launch. Its still pretty dang visible even this far inland.

Why watch it inland, when we are only a 45 minute drive to see it closer? I'm considering getting up at 3:30am and heading over, if anyone wants to know the best spot to watch it, ask me this week.

Can't wait to see eveyone!

I received several messages from South Florida teams that the Turnpike north was shut down and I95 was a parking lot because of fires. I'm assuming that is why so few teams unloaded tonight. Should be a busy morning.

Garage F directly behind the arena is your best bet. Most of the surrounding garages will be filled with students. This year it will be pretty much first come, first serve.

You can park in garage D, F, or H.

Parking shouldn't be too bad provided you don't arrive after 9 am or so.

Not sure what the specific parking rules are, but be careful not to park in any spaces designated 'B' or 'C' permits only as you may get a parking ticket.

Our plan is to have a 30 min broadcast on Friday at close to 3pm depending on match schedule (meaning if a match is happening at 3pm we will wait till it over)

We start Saturday 30 min before eliminations start and broadcast until the final award is given

The assists were not credited as they happened, so there were no lights on the high goal. My guess is that he refs thought that they still had a auto ball, but it was the first cycle ball.

I hope someone is reading this, this webcast is choppy, cuts out a lot (especially before CRyptonite plays) You'd figure NASA would have the technology and bandwidth to give a quality webcast.

Yup, sounds like those with a choppy webcast are possibly having their own bandwidth/connection/computer issues.

Someone in the Dallas chat mentioned that a team on the #1 alliance used extra batteries as dead weight on their robot for elims, but this wasn't discovered/discussed until after they had already played their first elim matches, so the disqualification happened afterwards. I'm sure someone from the event will provide more details/clarifications soon enough.

I wasn't even aware that was against the rules, and after a quick search through the manual I still can't find anything on it. Can someone post which rule this would break?

In theory, R31. Though that only states that the only legal source of electrical energy is one of the listed batteries.

There was a 2012 ruling against batteries as counterweights, but that year's battery rule had the verbiage: "This is the only battery allowed on
the Robot." That's notably lacking from this year's version of the rule. I think it's a pretty grey area in the current rules, really.

These 2 rules could be important:
Quote:

T6
A Team is only permitted to participate in a Qualification or Elimination MATCH and receive Qualification Points if their ROBOT has passed Inspection. If it is discovered after the start of the MATCH that a ROBOT did not pass Inspection and the Team participated in the MATCH, the entire ALLIANCE receives a RED CARD for that MATCH.
Quote:

T10
If a ROBOT is modified after it has passed Inspection, other than modifications described in T8, that ROBOT must be re-Inspected.

Kevin Sevcik 15-03-2014 16:04

Re: 2014 Orlando Regional

NOTE: 1902 (the suspect team) reportedly has tweeted out a picture of their re-inspection sticker.

I think they also have an argument if they passed re-inspection with the extra battery in place. The T6 rule on red cards for competing when you haven't passed inspection sure sounds like it only counts whether you've passed inspection or not. Not whether or not you SHOULD have passed inspection.

Penalizing a team that unknowingly passed inspection when they shouldn't have is a recipe for disaster. One slightly mistaken or distracted inspector could, theoretically, disqualify a significant percentage of a regional in one fell swoop. And you know we've all seen teams that shouldn't have passed inspection that nevertheless passed in exactly that (usually slightly) illegal configuration.

Here at Orlando we were told that a robot on the red alliance (the number one seed alliance) failed to get reinspected and the changes made to the robot were deemed "egregious" and were thus red carded after the matches were played. That is all the details we were given to the crowd. I would like to remind everyone not to spread rumors and wait for/if the involved parties to speak.

Typically elimination inspections are done after the team's final qualification match. Weight probably wasn't added until after alliance selections, so it's concievable (and quite common) to make signifant changes after getting your elimination sticker checked off.

In the event that you do, you then need to have an inspector approve of your changes.

Not sure what happened in this situation.

So. The "ROBOT battery" is "the only legal source of electrical energy for the ROBOT during the competition". So, I'm reading that a battery that's not actually sourcing electricity isn't a "ROBOT battery".

The following is an admittedly picky discussion of English grammar. Stop reading now if that's going to make you tear your hair out. And yes, I'm stopping after this. Promise.

So two things. First, I've always understood that clauses surrounded by commas like that are meant to be non-essential to the meaning of a sentence. So the sentence should have the same meaning without that clause.
Quote:

The only legal source of electrical energy for the ROBOT during the competition is one of the following approved 12VDC non-spillable lead acid batteries:
Second, I've always understood that such clauses are meant to describe the clause they're attached to. Which is why I removed the predicate of that sentence, since the predicate was modifying the subject ("The only legal source of electrical energy for the ROBOT during the competition"). The clause ("the ROBOT battery") is also modifying/associated with that subject.

That's how I tend to read things anyways. If I wanted to convey your version of meaning, I'd have phrased it:
Quote:

The ROBOT battery is one of the following approved 12VDC non-spillable lead acid batteries:

This battery is the only legal source of electrical energy for the ROBOT during the competition.
Anyways. Stopping now because at this point I've fully expressed my opinion on the battery counterweight issue. And the T6 inspection issue requires more and more detailed information from the teams in question as to the timing of modifications, re-inspection, etc.

EDIT: Also, your version of the rule would imply that you can use a battery as ballast on the robot, as long as it doesn't have one of those part numbers. My version also implies this, with the addition that those part numbers can also be used if they're not sourcing electricity.

Ok so here is what happened from the perspective of someone who was standing 5 feet from them and spoke with there alliance members about it.

1902 (exploding bacon)'s shooter was not on there robot for elims. they needed to dead weight to play there primary role as a defender. they loaded 2 extra batteries onto there robot totaling approximately 24 lbs. they did NOT go to inspection with them on. (i assume they where thinking that there robot weight did not include ANY batteries) Due to R35 this is prohibited and caused them to violate T10 resulting in a red card for the alliance.

Both quarter finals matches where played before a member of 179 (Children Of The Swamp) noticed this and challenged the match based on the T10 violation by steeping into the question box. It was ruled to be illegal. The #1 seed alliance of pink, cryptonite, and exploding bacon where DQ'd. As this violation could have impacted the outcome of QF 1-1 and QF 1-2 they advance.
