Types of Judges at Events?
We're a Rookie team and are trying to find out what categories or types of judges will be coming to the pits during Regionals (specifically Peachtree if it matters). At some point, I saw a short list of 5+ titles somewhere, but can't find it now. We don't get to do a formal Chairman's presentation as Rookies, but we'd like to be prepared with answers to questions for anyone that stops by. Any insight?
Thanks in advance- |
Re: Types of Judges at Events?
Generally you'll have two 'official' judge 'interviews' in the pit (usually sets of two); one being specifically about your robot, the other being about your team. After those interviews, you'll be given a sticker to place on your team number in the pit (each pit has a sign with that team's number). Often, however, other judges will come along to talk to you, aside from those 'official'(using that term loosely) interviews.
Also, oftentimes a safety judge will ask to interview your safety captain. |

Look for blue polos. Judges will be wearing blue polos and roving the pits Friday and Saturday. They will be introduced at opening ceremonies on Thursday so you will know exactly what I mean.
They usually travel in pairs but can sometimes be seen alone in the wild. Different judges will want to talk about different things. As a rookie, you may or may not have separate areas of the team dedicated to mechanical and controls and outreach. We try to keep 1 or more representatives around the pit for each of those areas (some students overlap) at all times. Don't be afraid to direct the question to someone else in the pit (unless they are asking about your specific experiences on the team or something). However, judges really want to talk to the students, not the adults. You will usually be visited by at least a set of "technical" (robot) judges and a set of "outreach" or "nontechnical" (team and team activities) judges. There are also green polos out and about. Those are the safety advisers and will want to talk to your safety captain. |

Don't be afraid to seek out judges if you have free time. They like talking to students. It's their job.

Re: Types of Judges at Events?
A better breakdown would be to say there are "Technical Judges" and "Non-technical Judges".
Technical will judge you for items like Industrial Design, Leader ship in Controls, and Creativity. Easy way to identify them, they will ask, ""hat is your favorite thing about your robot?" Non-technical will be for item like entrepenuership, spirit, organization, and other non-robot items. |
