"FRC SCOUT" is OUT
The moment you all have been waiting for... the iPad app "FRC SCOUT" is live!
Features: - Bluetooth Data Transfer - Pit Scouting with Camera - Online Match Schedule Retrieval - And More! Please check out the Blog, Facebook Page, and YouTube Tutorial. ![]() |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
This is a fantastic app. It makes it really easy to pull up data on teams which will be invaluable when your in the queue line planing the strategy for the match. Another cool thing that I haven't seen before is that the app can quickly transfer all of its data to other Ipad's via bluetooth. Its set up in such a way that you can have a team of 6 ipads and after every match they automatically transfer the data to each other. Props to Louie for putting so many hours over the past year into this app.
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Wow. It's amazing. I am in shock as to how great it is.
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
As of yesterday, this app has been approved by Apple and I really encourage everyone who has an iPad to give it a shot.
I also just tested, and the downloading of match schedules from the current three regionals (Central Illinois, Palmetto, and Alamo) all work within the app. I have a bug fix update rolling out within the next couple days, I'm just waiting on Apple to approve it. Please give feedback (positive or negative) about the app so I can make it better. I really want this project to be something that all of FIRST Robotics can enjoy and love for years to come. (I'm the developer btw, if you haven't figured that out yet lol) |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
This looks awesome.
Is there a way that you can add a custom field or two? Each team's scouting priorities are going to be different and it'd be nice to have an additional numerical field we could use for our own purposes. |
This thing is great ....
1. can the match schedule be downloaded in 1 devices and be pushed via bluetoothed to the other 5? 2. On the scouting screen could you make it so we can swipe to a blank picture of a field and be able to draw typical robot movements. |
Is this comparable with iPad mini?
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
@Ty Tremblay
I don't think it will be possible to have a custom field because it would be nearly impossible to track to create averages and such. My solution for that problem would be to give your scouts a notepad to write down any custom field they need. @Jmulderig As for transferring the match schedules, I guess I can do that, but it doesn't seem incredibly necessary. All the user has to do is be on WiFi and go to the "More" page and tap "Download Match Schedules". And the tracing robots' paths is a great idea that I hope to be implementing by next year. It'll take a lot of coding and it would practically disallow the user from recording the actual actions of the robot because of how focused they would be on tracing its path. It might be something I'll put in the iPhone/iPod Touch app to come. And I believe it would be compatible with the iPad mini because I haven't seen anything in my development that specifies otherwise. @all I appreciate the feedback |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Great thanks for the response....
We are nervous about unreliable wifi at the competition...and if we have one devise with a data plan then we would be covered. as far as mapping i could invision having two scouts per team especialy in the future some games may be very path importnant. Lastly(prob not cause im so jacked up from this app i have a million things going through my head) A defense +/- and goalie +/- -we used the falcon scouting sytem last year and a defense +/- number became very usufull to us as a tie breaker for picking teams. keep up the awesome work!!!! |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
For downloading match schedules, you can do that the night before the qualification matches start back at your convenient WiFi location (whether it be a hotel or your home). I made the app so it does not require any WiFi during the regional.
Also, it is not a huge deal if the match schedule doesn't get downloaded, the user would just have to type in the team number manually for every match. |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT

The reason I ask is because I think time of possession (or how fast you can do what you want to do with the ball), is one of the most important stats you can record this year. |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Also, in order to add another field, I would have to change how the app stores the data, which would then make you uninstall and reinstall (deleting every ounce of stored data) the app in order for those changes to come into effect. It would also be very difficult to transfer custom data because different teams would have different custom fields, which would then be impossible to display. Trust me, it is a LOT easier to force users to use a certain format. You could also have your scouts add that extra data into the notes field after they click "Save Match"
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Will you be posting a version for android as well? I loved this on my ipad mini, but not everyone on the team had anapple device. Great app guys!
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
will this be available for iphone and also possibly laptop
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
There is currently no version for iPhone or Android or Desktop. Another teammate and I have considered creating an HTML app for computers, but we haven't put any resources into it just yet.
In the future, I plan to create an iPhone/iPod Touch app, but I'm not entirely sure how far I'll be able to go with that considering the much smaller screen size. I will be researching Android development after the season ends to hopefully have an app on the market by next season. Sorry to disappoint some of you guys about it being iPad only, but I am still in high school and I have only been learning this language for about a year now. With more time, more updates will come and more features will be released. |

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
While respecting your intellectual property, wondering if you could summarize the technique you use in your download of information: JSON, JSOUP, or is it something Objective C? I'm a programming guy, and would be a fun discussion for coders in my school.
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
I'm assuming you're talking about the match schedules and yes, it is a JSON script that I had a mentor put together for me. He created an executable that we are running on a Windows computer that iterates through every regional's qualification schedule and creates the giant JSON script from that every 8 hours. Here's the url I pull from.

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
This app looks amazing! Really well done, and is makes me smile with the "cool story, bro!" and other little things like that. (Trust me scouts need the smiles!) If you're taking requests, I had three notes on the app:
-I think it would be really nice to have a column for truss misses (or truss attempts, either works). Knowing when a team misses a truss shot will be just as important as knowing when they make one. -"fumbles" or unintentionally dropping the ball. This is a huge time waster and something I think a lot of teams will be looking for. -An option to export the data to excel! This way, if teams do have custom data, they can track it on their own, and add it to excel later. Plus, everyone has excel and it runs on multiple platforms, so people could share the data at the strategy meeting without everyone needing an ipad with the app downloaded. Overall, amazing work! I can tell you put a lot of time into this, and it sure paid off! |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Quote:
I initially didn't think that missing the truss and fumbles would be necessary (and I did think about them), but after watching week 1 regionals, it really surprised me how often teams couldn't shoot the ball over an extremely wide target and I believe more so now that it is important data to capture. The scouts can always add the the custom data in as notes (ie. the truss misses and ball handling and such), but do you think it's worth erasing the app's contents to get those requested features in? Also, as for excel integration, I totally agree with you. I'm working on getting it set up to host a local URL and then display a .csv text that could be copied and pasted into excel, or possibly going a bluetooth file transfer route, but those two methods are entirely new to me, so it may or may not be out before this season is over. I really appreciate the positive feedback and I LOVE that you enjoy the app. Please spread the word and I will continue to work on updates. I am also a little behind on school work right now, so I gotta get that taken care of, but I have spring break coming up, so who knows? I may just get that .csv thing figured out! Also, finally, there should be a bug fix update coming out in the next couple days (version 1.0.1) that fixes several crashes and labels that weren't updating correctly. There will also be more tutorial videos being posted a few days from now once I dig myself out of school work as well. Hang tight FRC Scouts! I'm still working for you! :D |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
This app is awesome! Thanks so much, it definitely makes organizing scouting data a lot simpler and more interesting for the students.
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Looking good! It's simple, functional, and pretty straightwforward. I'm building a scouting app for my team this year and I'm wondering how you're handling syncing data between tablets. What format are you sending the data in, how do you determine which data to send each time (is it all the data or just data changed since the last sync), and how do you handle conflicts upon sync (for example, two users pit scout the same team and then try to sync with each other)? Again, very nice work!
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Quote:
On the "More" page there is a much larger sharing capability where I use the file transfer feature of Multipeer Connectivity. I have the sending iPad store all its data to a local filepath, send the data to the receiver (who also stores it in a local filepath), and display the progress on the progress bar as it happens. After the transfer is complete and the receiving iPad stored the data into its Core Data model, both iPads delete the local url that they created for the transfer so that they no longer take up any extra memory from the transfer. In your example of two users pit scouting the same team, the receiving user has the option to allow overwriting for any conflicts. There is a switch that appears with the other User Interface elements once a connection is established on the "More" page that, when the switch is on, overwrites all conflicting data with the incoming data. If the switch is off (which is default), the conflicting incoming data is thrown away after the transfer is complete and the receiver keeps the data they had before. |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Thanks for the in-depth response. That sounds like a much nicer solution than what I have to use with Android, which doesn't provide anything like the Core Data model offered by Apple. My solution involves a lot of (de)serialization of JSON files to/from Bundles which are used to store and access data. I would be using an SQLite database for all this but that didn't fit with my model of making the system very extensible and adaptable year-to-year. If you have time (I know how the life of a developer is!) it'd be great if you could write up a whitepaper outlining how your app functions; that would be an interesting read.
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Quote:
The whitepaper sounds like a great idea. Is there a certain format that is typically followed? (I'm still kinda new to all this) If so, could you give me a link? |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
I actually had my team scout with the app in week 1. It was PHENOMENAL... The single thing I had issue with was getting bluetooth data transfer to work. I could connect them all, but no data transfer occurred. That is the only issue/feedback I had. We took the data from each iPad and made a spreadsheet. Everything was entered into the spreadsheet and then averaged out appropriately. Except for the data transfer, the app is PERFECT.

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
This app is absolutely fantastic. We'll be using it this weekend at the Crossroads Regional.

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Quote:
I apologize for the problems you may have been experiencing with bluetooth sharing. Also, it works the EXACT same over WiFi (it uses the same API, so it was cake on my part), so if you want a faster transfer and have WiFi at your disposal, just have the devices connected on the same network and you're good to go. |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
This is a great app and we plan to use it for our surveying in Week 3! In working with the app this week, we noticed that we were not able to bring in the schedules of some of the regionals. Do you only have schedule data for some of the regionals? We will be at the Orlando Regional next week and would like to be able to load the schedule in if we are going to use it.
Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing it! |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT

Basically, I have absolutely no control over when the match schedules get posted. I can just promise you that they will be available through the app within a couple hours of FIRST posting them. To all: The most help you guys could do right now is just spread the word about the app. The more users, the more feedback, the more I know where to spend my time and effort. Thank you for your questions! |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Sweet app, Ibertoncin! Quite easy to use!
Is there any way to export the data to a computer or something along those lines? |

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Hi!
The app looks amazing, but I think that being able to type comments in before the end of the match is important. In other words, I think it would be helpful to have a comment field that you can go in and out of during the match instead of only being allowed to comment after all of the teleop points are accounted for. Thanks again for all the hard work put into the app. |

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
This app in incredible.
Any advice from teams who've used it to scout an actual event? Can you connect more than 6 iPads so the driveteam can have access to the data? |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Quote:
The connection made on the "Scoring" page is for more of a non-obstructive way of real-time sharing so that all six scouts (Red 1, Red 2, etc) don't have to do anything different to get matches to send to one another. As for advice, I noticed that the bluetooth connection API that I utilize in the app does not work once an iPad is put to sleep. So, big tip: Keep your iPads plugged in and put the auto-sleep timer to max if not off. (You can turn down your brightness if you're terribly concerned about battery life as well) Thank you for the compliment! I heard from a Team Driven alumnus that the app was quite a hit at Crossroads this last weekend as well. I'm so glad it's helping everyone! |

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Would it be possible to allow us to have multiple pictures for a robot in the pit scouting section?
This would allow people to have different angels of the robot and/or pit. |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Quote:
If you want to retake a better picture, just type in that team's team number in the "Record a Team" page in Pit Scouting and all their data will fill in and you can change whatever you need, then just overwrite what you have. |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
For which events has scouting data been entered? (pit, or match)
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
After using this app at Crossroads extensively, I only have one feature request. It would be nice to be able to edit pit scouting data, rather than have to re-enter all fields in case of a scouting error.
Other than that, flawless app. Thank you! -Nick |

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
total confusion here now. installed app on an ipad. apparently app is an input device only. scouted phantom match after some confusion cleared a bit. How would that information get to a place where it can be seen?
On html side login at frcscout.com will not allow location crossroads. only the first 5 o f the valid locations are listed. wpi not there either. tried crossroads after seeing that someone had used frc scout extensively there. I'm not doing well in the info-age. I hope the kids can grok this mess as I will not be able to represent it at all well to them. |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Quote:
The app is NOT input only. You can easily view every ounce of recorded data that you record on the page labeled "Data" with a 3 data stack icon as the page icon (at the bottom of the screen of the app). On the Data page, you can view every detail of individual recorded teams by tapping the "Single Team" button. Regional specific data (like rankings, alliance selection, and the Next Match view) are all available by tapping the "Within Regional" button. Again, this is all accessed on the Data page. If you want to record fake data to test the app out, you can easily erase it by going to the "More" page (the three circles icon on the bottom) and tapping the "Delete Local Database" button. As for your comment on frcscout.com, I have absolutely NO connection with the frcscout.com. I am sorry for your bad experiences with that website, but that has nothing to do with my app. I really have nothing available for users on the web as of right now, it's only on the iPads. I believe the most success from using this app (and the feature that puts it above the rest) is the bluetooth sharing capabilities. Simply go to the More page (again, on the bottom of the app) and then turn on the "Host" switch on the top left and have another iPad with the app open on that page nearby. Make sure both iPads have bluetooth turned on, and the Host iPad should see the other iPad. Simply select that iPad's name on the Host iPad's screen, then you can connect from there. After that, just tap send on the page to send any data from one connected iPad to another. I'm sorry for your confusion. I wish the best for you and your team and I will continue to be following this thread closely if you happen to have any other questions. |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Hi. We are at the Orlando Regional and are having trouble downloading the qualification schedules to the ipads. The schedules were posted about 3 1/2 hours ago on FIRST and Blue Alliance but we aren't receiving them on your app. Do you think they will be available soon?
Thanks for your help! |

The FRC Scout Manual is officially published! Andrew from team 2232 stepped up in a big way and made this amazing iBook! HUGE shoutout to him and all the hard work that he's obviously put into this. The data comes straight from the FIRST website and is refreshed every 3 hours. Also keep in mind the final match schedules are typically not posted until the evening of practice matches or the morning of the first qualification matches. |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
As of this morning (with yesterday's downloads included), FRC Scout now has 932 downloads!! I don't know about you guys, but I think it's possible to get those other 68 downloads by the end of Saturday. Let's break 1000!!
Secondly, I wouldn't advise uninstalling the app after competition is done because I will be continuing development and I'd like to count on several of you guys to help me beta test for next year. I've got a lot of big plans for this app and I look forward to all of your input. Also, I will be making my GitHub repo public in the next few weeks to open up issue requesting and code critiquing as well as learning opportunities for those of you curious about Objective C. Above all, spread the word about this app!! The more downloads, the better it'll be, I promise! I wanted this to be my senior legacy and it has developed into everything I could've hoped it could be and more, and it's all because of you guys! Thank you and keep up the great scouting!! |
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
I have officially made my repository for the app public! Please feel free to critique it and maybe learn a few things about Objective-C if you are just starting out. It is far from professionally done and doesn't have a ton of comments and has absolutely no tests, but I look to change that over the summer.

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Hi!
Personally, I believe the important statistics this year are going to be: •How well/If a team works well with alliance members •Preferred tote height (if stacking alone) •Speed of stacking (maybe on a scale of 0-10) •Bin Capping (scale of 0-10) •Noodle in Bin? (No, badly, medium, well) •Did they knock anything down? (No, Yes-one tote/bin, Yes-medium, Yes-full stack) as well as things about coopertition, auton and human player noodle thrower (probably a bunch I am missing). What I am trying to say is that I don't think all of the quantitative data is so important this year (exactly how many totes were stacked etc.). I think this type of rating system could be fairly valuable to have. Also, I think being able to type in comment during the match is very important. Again, thanks for the great app! I can't wait to see it this year. |

We intend on having the version 1.0 released in time for Week 1 regionals.
If any teams would like to test out the app beta version for Week 0, please have ONE representative from each interested team send an email to dev.frcscout@gmail.com with your team number, and we will put you on the email list for the beta version. We can only give 100 of these "tickets" out, so be quick if you want one. Thanks for all the attention, and I promise we will provide another fantastic app for this year. |

Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
It seems as though you are trying to download last year's app. This year's app got finished at 4:00 AM last night after a huge haul of exceptionally large amounts of effort from the Dev Team. The beta version (a copy of what was submitted to Apple last night) is currently available. Just simply email dev.frcscout@gmail.com.
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
I am not finding the app on the appstore is it still there available for download?
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
It is currently not on the app store, as it is waiting for review by Apple (which should take about a week). The beta is available, however if you email dev.frcscout@gmail.com and request an invite.
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Is the app still awaiting Apple review?
|
Re: "FRC SCOUT" is OUT
Yes please. When will the application be updated? There are still some extremely important features that are needed such as the CSV export and ALL the greyed out buttons currently in the app. It's great work so far but it's incomplete.
