Re-reading the manual:

5.4.4 Elimination Scoring
In the Elimination MATCHES, Teams do not earn Qualification Points; they earn a Win, Loss or Tie. Within each series of the Elimination MATCH bracket, the first ALLIANCE to win two (2) MATCHES will advance.

In the case where the MATCH score of each ALLIANCE is equal, the tie is broken by awarding an extra point to the ALLIANCE with (in the following order):

highest number of FOUL points awarded (i.e. the ALLIANCE that played the cleaner MATCH)
if FOUL points are equal, highest number of ASSIST points
if ASSIST points are equal, highest number of AUTO points
if AUTO points are equal, highest sum of TRUSS and CATCH points

If the criteria above are equal, the MATCH is a Tie. Additional matches will be played if needed.

How long has this rule been this way?? are the officials simply ignoring it and playing tie breaker matches?

Clarification would be welcome!

I think they started this practice in 2012. 2010 was notorious for tied matches in eliminations, sometimes the finals would go up to 5 matches, so they decided to go to a tiebreaker.

The rule has been that way since 2011. Or at least, quite similar--typically, clean match, then the other objectives in order.

I would guess that many of the various replays are due to field faults rather than true ties--but I could also see true ties happening quite often.

would result in advancement based on who played cleaner matches?

has anyone seen this happen at elimination matches?

Another match should be played because of how the rule is written.

There was a tie during Elims at Centerline today, and they followed the rule to the letter. Blue committed a foul, so Red was advanced.

Same happened at the Southfield district also today... Since there were no foul points, it went to the most assist points..

The tiebreaker is for a tied match. A series is still best 2 of 3.

He's saying Blue won the first match, Red won the second, and then they tied the third match.

This actually did help me understand the situation better.

so the tie breaker is for a tied match, and a single point would be added to that match's score based on the cleaner match, etc.

Also was used at Mt. Olive in the Semi-Finals. After refs decided to replay a third-round match, the replay score resulted in a tie. This rule was followed, it was a clean match (no penalties), and one point was added to the team with the greater assist points.
