Different assists at different regionals?

So I was watching a live stream yesterday of several matches at either the Alamo Regional or the Southfield District Competition (I was alternating) and noticed that the way that they were giving alliances credit for assists was weird. They would give alliances credit for assists even if the robots were passing the ball to each other in the same zone (for example robot to robot in red only, or robot to robot in white only), and even noticed that they would give an alliance credit for 3 assists even if all of the robots passed the ball to each other while all remaining in the same zone, but I assumed that there was a rule change of some sort that the referees knew about. Then I was watching a live stream of the Inland Empire Regional today and saw the same thing happen, but the alliance got no credit for any assists. Did any one else notice this?

Didn't notice that. But I did notice an inbounded ball that simply bounced on top of a robot and over it, with no active motion on its part was lit up as an assist.

It all comes down to judgement calls on the part of the field judges. But what you're describing sounds like a big error if it really went down that way.

Refs don't award assists, they credit possessions. So if Red1 passes to Red2 in the Red Zone, the ref will indicate a possession for both in Red. If Red2 drives into the White Zone, the ref will indicate a possession in White. Same thing with Red3 and the Blue Zone.

The computer then calculates the "best" configuration and awards the assist points if the ball is scored.

But as per the rules, an assist should be shown (meaning, the lights above the goals should be lit up) if a robot is passing the ball to a robot in a different zone than the zone they are in, not passing the ball to robots in the same zone, which is what was happening.

The rule manual has a specific example of this I'm pretty sure. If both robots have procession in one of the zones and the robot that receives the ball goes on to score or passes it again, the alliance should still get the extra assist for that first procession. If they both process it in the same zone, they still should get 2 assists. The finalists at GTRW were executing this very well and were able to compete well with their excellent teamwork- I was very impressed by them.

Oh okay, I must have misinterpreted the rules.
