Yet another awesome event put on by Duluth! Thanks to all the volunteers who made these regionals possible.
Congrats to all the teams who attended. Building and maintaining your robot throughout the competition was no easy task.
All of the elimination matches were well fought battles. 3313, 706, 3883 - you were an awesome alliance and it couldn't have been more exciting!
Thanks to 3018 and 3692. You adapted and never gave up.

yeah... the double decker was hard.. but as one of the teams playing that match (3692, alliance partner with 3018), they were tough competitors and it was a good match all around.

We couldn't have done it without you guys!!!! That was the absolute amazing thing to me about our alliance, and part of why I think we won. None of our robots really carried or was the "super star" of the team, but rather the way all 3 of our robots (and teams) worked together was just spectacular. I haven't seen the stats, but to me it seemed our QF,SF, and Final matches had to have some of the highest team assist points of the regional.

You guys were SOOO awesome to work with, and the fact you were both willing to listen to our teams idea about an alliance in the first place. I don't know about 3018, but from what 2052 told me, 3692 wasn't even really much of a consideration for an Alliance Partner until our guys pitched the idea to them, and 3018 happened to walk up and ask 2052 what their thoughts were on an alliance, and then all 3 started talking, and the magic just happened!

one thing I have to say though... our alliance's belief in us and their willingness to go against the scouting data on a hunch (to be honest our numbers weren't that great, we had some issues getting things dialed in and we were really performing very well until probably after lunch on Friday).

Again.. thanks to all at the Regional, this was easily our most memorable one yet, and the whole team is SOOO excited for the championship!

I think this is what the game designers were going for. Teamwork.

A superstar bot who assigns its partners to nothing but defense can only score 20 pts per cycle and with defense being played against it can probably only manage at best say 1.5 cycles per the other team's 3-assist cycle. That's a losing proposition. Ball handing and dealing with defense seem to be key. Your team was great at the inbound for the possession (high percentage and low time) and 2052 was able to receive it from you reasonably quickly and reliably as well. Our bot (when working-- ugh) simply sealed the deal on each cycle and was able to play defense on their in-bounding robot while awaiting the ball.

Before 2052 lost the ability to throw over the truss it was up to us to chase down the ball -- sometime 1:2 against the defense. Afterwards 2052 had to drive us the ball or we had to meet causing 2:1 or 2:2 odds which worked more in our favor. Interesting to think whether losing the truss throw actually helped our alliance or hurt it.

Congrats to 3018, 2052, and 3692! Couldn't have asked for a more exciting and difficult finals. I never want to lose but you're kind of my favorites (other than our alliance of course).

I wrote about our Elims experience at this post.

Thinking about it more today, each match for us was just a battle and that's kind of the way we wanted to play it. We would make some changes obviously after analyzing the video and talking it through outside of the pressures of Elims. We loved working with 3883 and 706. The range of emotions and adversity we all experienced together (losing, winning, losing but then winning, etc.) will stay with me and our team for a long time.

The switching from offense to defense for basically every team is actually awesome if you ask me. Takes incredible driver skill and Alliance communication.

Overall, a great experience and we couldn't be happier. All the best to 3018 and 3962 at the Wisconsin Regional. We'll be seeing 2052 at 10,000 Lakes in a few weeks.

This was a great regional despite that we seeded 46th. Thanks again 3313 and 706 for adding us to your alliance, I know some teams would not have looked at a team that far down on the rankings (thank you 3313 scouting team). It was way to much fun/stress dragging each round out to the third match (4 for the replayed match). Here is the day 3 highlight video. At about 30 seconds you will see why teams should put the radio in a very very VERY safe protected location. Sorry 1816 for the damage. The intake arm actuators were bent and don't lift right away after the joystick give the command. I hope you enjoy the video and our team plans on hitting North Star just as hard with our robot. Our robot (3018) had its shooter lose power during the Double DECCer match; this is something we will look into right away at the Wisconsin Regional. That was too bad as it would have been a real close one if we could have shot with our great partners 3692 and 2052 out there.

Good luck to you as well! Your alliance was very strong - I think most of our alliances in eliminations picked very good robots to go along with our skills and strategy. That goes for alliances 1 through 8 in Lake Superior, almost all the alliances had a legitimate chance to win the whole thing. This year's game wasn't always about having the best robot on your alliance, but the best that fit with your strategy - a different thought process from the past. It was a lot of 'Battle Bot' kind of action out there at times, but most alliances found ways around it to score. Too bad the pounding we took hurt us in the Double DECCer final as it would have been good to find a way to pull that one out against three awesome robots (one even from Hawaii in Duluth, of all places!) Hope to see you in St. Louis, Jeremy!

Hey Craig,

Looking over a video from behind the wall, I think I see where our halo may have been bent. 2052 was trying to get the ball to us in our zone, but it escaped. We picked it up, turned around to shoot, and we were hit on the BAD/BLT side a few times from 359, and it was high enough to hit our halo in the shooting position. After that, we shot to the left. You can see the side view at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFcNY6nVTCQ. Look around the 1:20 mark. That may be what happened. They were playing legit defense, just hit us repeatedly and caught us in the wrong place.
