Agreed. Whatever you end up with, try to get people to committed to it and build a brand around it. Even if you end up going with something relatively "less interesting," build an identity, whether it's with lights or washing machine hats or anything else. Your team's branding is the first thing people notice, to the point of making your name less important (example, my team, Blue Twilight, doesn't use Blue Twilight so much as Team 2220, and most of our branding is LEDs everywhere and stars).

This is just the kind of tongue-in-cheek humor that makes a team's name perfect.

My idea for my team's name when we first started was Team Titanic. We'd build extravagant machines, only to watch them fail horribly! I think Team Titanium worked out better in the end.

Re: Help With Robotics Team Name

Have your team make a bunch of names and then have a vote on it.
Perhaps use something that the team is interested in as a base for a name.

Since you are going to be a rookie team the name can change.

Our rookie year we were named the Roboriders. We did not know about CD then nor did much research into team names. We were kind of thrown into FIRST by a grant that we were given, though never applied. Very overwhelmed at the beginning, so you are already doing well by being here and getting some feedback..

Our school team names are the Waveriders.. makes sense since were are in Hawaii and surfing was invented here... We were very fortunate to go to the world championships our first year..

After hearing about every variation of Robo*.* we knew our name HAD to change. We had a new name picked out by the time the plane landed.

From then on we became Tiki Technologies aka Tiki Techs!

Wonderfully there was no team name even close. Though we did kick around something with coconuts but that was used by another team, go figure, whom we have met at worlds and are a wonderful team! We didn't want to take away from their name or cause any confusion. Since it was confusing to us hearing so many variations of Robo*.*

So come up with a few names and search to see if there is something similar..

It turned out that changing our name was the best thing for us. Much easier to market our team and far more memorable.

+1 to the Washington Machines.. Funny, and you can name your robots maytag, bosch, etc..

Good luck and have fun with the naming of your team.

Aloha!

Re: Help With Robotics Team Name

When my team was brainstorming team names for our Rookie year (last year!), we got everyone together and made a giant list. Every suggestion made it onto that list no matter how ridiculous until we had ~6 pages. We narrowed down some obvious no-go's like Scorpion Kickers, Meatloaf, and Brobotics. Omit anything with a copyright- Hobbit or Sonic Screwdrivers- unless you want to go through the process of gaining the rights to use that name. (I just pulled up our old list and had a good laugh about some.) We narrowed it down to four names: 5UP3RN0V4, STEMpunk, Mentally Buoyant, and Laser Shark Commando Squad.
After we couldn't narrow them down by votes, we thought about marketing and image. STEMpunk won at the agreement of all.

Because you'll want to have a team name that lasts, I think it's important to have agreement at the beginning because that consensus will most likely last if you're able to build upon an image.
