Fingerlakes Regional:2014

Teams 1592 and 801 are excited about heading up there to compete. Any suggestions on things to do when we are there? Places to eat? We are also looking for a few sleds and/or tubes to possible barrow while we are up there. There are not many reasons to have sleds in Florida so buying them seems like a little bit of a waste. =)

I'm sure someone out there will be willing to lend you guys a few sleds, but at the moment there isn't too much snow around. Just don't be too disappointed if there isn't any by the time FLR starts up. :p

We don't quite get that much snow in Rochester, well maybe we do sometimes....

As for places to eat, if you have a bus or something to transport the team I Would recommend going to Nick Tahou's and getting Garbage Plates. Maybe try some white hots while you're there. It's not a restaurant but a stop at Wegman's is almost obligatory if you're in Rochester.

The cult of Wegman's is really something to be experienced.

I've often heard Rochester's greatest gift to the world is containing the Garbage Plate, and not allowing it outside the city.

Other cities just can't handle the Garbage Plate. Meat hot sauce is just too much for some people.

I would recommend Dinosaur Barbecue.

Not that this isn't a good topic but I was a little surprised that this thread is not about how epic FLR is going to be with so many high performing teams...

Our team has historically done our late night scouting session at Wegmans.

Sticky Lips BBQ is better than Dinosaur, IMO--and Dinosaur doesn't have the space to accommodate most FRC teams.

Space isnt a problem for us. Bubbalous BBQ down here in Orlando has become a very popular place for teams after the regional and it isnt the largest of places.

Sticky Lips is far far better and closer to the regional down the street from the event.
I know you guys want to go see Niagra Falls. If you go try to go to the Canadian side. The American side looks like Downtown Disney Cosplaying as Raccoon City. The Canadian side is much much better.

Remember to check passport regulations. I believe that you need a passport/enhanced drivers license to get back into the US.

Very excited for this event. We've spent the past week ironing out the last of our bugs at Tech Valley. A more durable arm setup and an improved shot strength should make us even better at ball pickup, truss shooting, and auton.

However, FLR is a stacked event this year. Tons of very competitive teams to play with and against! It will be very difficult, and I hope we can shine as an ideal "assistant" to one of these great finishers.

Looks like the forecast for Thursday/Friday calls for summer-like conditions in Rochester (highs around 50F/10C), so not too likely for snow.

But Saturday it'll be back to normal with temps around freezing and possible freezing rain. Perhaps you'll get to skate in the parking lots!

Where are you guys staying? I'm sure some locals (or expatriates like me ;) could recommend team-friendly restaurants near your hotel as well.

The sheer number of excellent teams on that list is scary. Fingerlakes always has a high level of competition with consistently excellent teams like 1507, 340, 191, 1126 and more but the last time I remember there being so many out of town power teams (20, 341, 1592) was 2011 when 217 and 2056 came. I really wish I could make it! This looks like the week 5 to be watching.

Given how deep FLR is this year in quals it would be possible to see 1507 341 and 1126 all on one alliance. I expect the High score of 350 to be beaten this weekend. We may even cross over to 400!!! Definately becoming one of the best regionals (in the US) :)

Some of the Ski Resorts to the South are probably still open and making their own snow. You can go experience that if you want.

It may tease us about spring, but Mother Nature is still committed to winter. It's 19 deg and windy in Ithaca, and the forecast is for 11 deg when we load the van tomorrow at oh-dark:30. :( (At least at the moment, they aren't talking about snow.)

You didn't bring it, unless you showed up sometime in mid-November! This has been one heck of a winter, to be sure--though this weekend is showing signs of vaguely spring-like behavior.

Congratulations to the 2 alliances that made it to the finals. 5/6 robots are guaranteed to make it to Championships through winning FLR and through wildcard slots.

If Alliance #1 wins: 1507/378 earn through winning and 3015 earns through wild card

If Alliance #2 wins: 3015/3044 earn slots by winning and 1507 through wild card

I think you have an error there. 20 and 340 are the only teams that are already qualified for champs. So
If alliance #1 wins: There is one wildcard that would be passed to 3015.
If alliance #2 wins: There is one wildcard that would be passed to 1507.

3044 and 378 cannot make it to champs unless they are on the winning alliance

What a crazy event!

Thanks to Teams 1507 and 378 for one of the coolest alliances I've ever seen. The "statue" pass between you two was so incredibly consistent and the fact that it worked out so well is a testament to both of your robots.
1507, you missed one high goal in all of eliminations. Your robot is incredible and I'm so happy you're able to attend championships this year!

Congratulations to Team 1511 on your Chairman's Award! After seeing how fantastic your team is all-around, I'm excited to see how you perform at championships and in future years. I know I was inspired by your continued spirit and gracious professionalism.

Congratulations to the finalists- Teams 3015, 340, and 3044.
3015- I'm so happy you guys are able to go to championships at this point. Your robot is one of the cooler robots I've seen, and your catapult seems to never miss shots during autonomous.
340- I'm glad you got to play two matches against us in finals. Your robot is so good and in some matches on Friday you looked unstoppable! Your team is also extremely professional and gracious at all times!
3044- You guys built an awesome robot, but somehow flew under the radar to the second round again! I expect big and bright things from you in the coming years.

Speaking of up-and-comers at FLR, how about the Quality Award winners, team 2791, Shaker! You guys made a real comeback from TVR, showing off your skills in eliminations so much so that you got picked by Daisy! I hope we get to work with you guys next year. We'll finally get to #finishthejob together!

And speaking of Daisy, wow did 341 have an awesome robot at FLR. Those semifinals matches felt like finals matches when you had to play against Daisy! I thought you guys had the best robot at the event, and I wish you luck at MARCMP (if you attend) and definitely at Champs in a few weekends. Maybe we'll finally get to play WITH you instead of against you!

Lastly I want to give a shout-out to some incredible rookies. Team 5254 had arguably the best inbounder at the event. I think everyone can agree that their last-second score in Quarters 2-1 to beat the 341 alliance was absolutely incredible and one of the highlights of the event.

Good luck to 1507, 378, 340, 3015, 1511, 1592, 1126, 341, 191, and 639 at the championship event!

Thank you to all of the teams that competed at FLR! It was an amazing and tough competition, with some of the best bots that I have seen! Thank you to 3015 and 340 for being amazing alliance partners, it really was great working with both of you throughout the competition!

What a great event the 10th FLR turned out to be.

Congrats to 1511 on winning the Chairman's award. It couldn't have gone to a more deserving team. You guys were great when we were planing our elimination alliance. Too bad for that monkey wrench, thanks for being so gracious and understanding when things changed. Can't wait to see you guys at Championship. Rolling Thunder is a class act and it was our pleasure to work with you. You have made 340 a better team.

Thanks to 3015 and 3044 for making up such a great alliance. I couldn't believe it when you guys pulled off the upset in the first round of the finals in a 2 vs 3 match. I was shocked we were able to get our main drive shaft replaced in the short time we had. That FLR winners banner will have to wait one more year. 3015 thanks for picking us. You guys will make a tough team to knock down at champs.

1507, 20, and 378. What an amazing alliance you made. The statue pass was amazing. You guys showed grace and everything FIRST is all about in the finals. Thanks. I hope to see you on Einstein.

Josh and Eric, you made a great team on the mic's. The play of the weekend had to go to Josh running play-by-play and deflecting a ball from the scorer's table at the same time.

Congrats to 4930 for winning their 2nd Rookie-All-Star Award of the season. You have a great robot and a solid foundation. I look forward to competing with you for many years to come.

My favorite moment of the weekend came on Friday afternoon when Justin Montois won the Woodie Flowers Award. You are an inspiration and have kept me going more times than I can count. You have made our team better in ways that will be in place for years to come.

For those of you counting, either a B+L or Xerox team has been in the finals every year of the event. 1126 has been to the finals 5 times with 1 win, and 340 has made it there 5 times with 0 wins. and yet, 1507 has won the event 3 times ( every time beating a 340 alliance) and 174 won it 3 straight times.

With the exception of 1 year, either 1511 or 340 has taken home the Chairman's award and 5 of the 10 EI's at FLR.

Not a bad 10 years FLR.

Thanks so much to the volunteers--all of 'em! We have the best-run regional in FRC, from inspectors to reset crew to pit admin to emcees to queueing staff to all the behind-the-scenes volunteers that make it run so well.

Team 378 was honored to be part of the 1507/20 alliance. You guys thought outside the box and came up with a statue pass to keep the ball off the floor saving valuable time.

I echo Kevin's comments on the event. The excitement and enthusiasm throughout the event was incredible. I follow 1511 on FB and they are very active, very deserving. There are many role model teams at FLR and the Rochester area has done a fantastic job promoting and growing FIRST.

340 - what a sight - swapping parts by smartphone light - should be a new Meatloaf song:)

See you in St. Louis and good luck!!

Re: Fingerlakes Regional:2014

FLR and the Rochester area teams have a great history and this was a great celebration of the 10th anniversary.

It was a great day for our Erie-Niagara teams too. For those who don't remember, the Circuit Stompers, 378, mentored and spun off a rookie team in 2005 just in time for the inaugural FLR. That team? The Warlocks, 1507.

The Warlocks won Rookie All Star and High Seed that year and nearly won the regional but for the legendary tipping tetras at the last second.

This year, we had a new rookie team, mentored by The Warlocks, and they came in and did very well, bringing home another Rookie all Star: The Electric Mayhem, 4930, from Nichols School in Buffalo.

I was really impressed with their progress through the past two weekends. They seemed to pull a new trick out of their bag every match and by the end had a very effective robot and drive team.

After build season ends, I step back and leave the team to others, while I sit back and enjoy the show, as well as being free to volunteer at the events. That doesn't mean I'm not proud of The Warlocks. I am. They worked hard for this season.

But I'm also very proud of all the teams. Teams I've met in the pits. Teams I've gotten to know over the past 10 years of FLR. Many who I see year after year and will see next year again, with any luck.

The quality of the teams and their robots this year was amazing. Every one in the final rounds could have been the winner. And I would have cheered every one on and been satisfied with the competition any way it came out. You were all that good. You are all winners for being there in some way. Playing against you all made team 1507 play better. We had to. You have a stake in our team's performance by setting a high bar to reach.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Championships and will see you next year again at FLR.

Video of quarter final 2 match 2

Does anyone have video of quarter final 2 match 2 (4930,341,2791 vs. 2809,5254,191)? I am trying to figure out how our robot got pierced so that we can build better armor for our next competition this weekend. (Our battery and solenoid manifold were ripped right out of the middle of the robot). If you could upload to youtube and post a link here it would be most appreciated! This game seems to be particularly brutal and we want to be better prepared.

Thanks!

I really want to see quarter 2-1. Our alliance had a comeback from like 30 points down in auto to win by 1 point in the final seconds. It was one of 5254's best matches of the season.

Team 341 should have both of these matches on tape. I'll try to get them up as soon as possible, but it might be a few days before I am able to get them off our camera.

And one of the best matches of Aerial Assist I've seen all year. That last minute score was absolutely incredible!

If you have Qual95 on tape, I'd love to get a copy. (I know, I know, it's not very nice to ask you for tape of a match you lost, but by all reasonable predictions we should have gotten CRUSHED by 341/1126/1405, and managed to eke out a win with 2791 and 5349--it was the robot-performance highlight of our weekend!)

It was even more dramatic - an exact tie decided by assist points. The +1 point was added by the tiebreaker. Your robot was phenomenal and your alliance did an outstanding job working with what you had in the quarterfinals. Watching you guys get picked one selection before our second pick was one of the more disappointing moments of the weekend for me.

Re: Fingerlakes Regional:2014

Wow what a great regional. Teams 1592 and 801 had a great time at FLR. The venue was amazing, the teams where great, the level of competition was high, and it even snowed(the kids where more excited about that fact than me)!! I know both teams formed relationships that will last for years to come.

5349- Thanks for picking us. You should defiantly walk away from this regional with your heads held high and ready to come back next year. Not every team can say that they were an alliance captain their first year! We worked with you all weekend trying to help you guys out and we were more than happy to close the weekend out with you. If you ever need anything in the future just let us know and we will try to help you out.

639- It was awesome to get to compete along side of you guys. We will see you at champs and hopefully on the same side of the glass again.

340- I know we formed a friendship between the two teams that will last many seasons to come. Thanks for letting us come to your build space and practice with you the Tuesday before the competition. Having to switch out our base driver 3 days before the competition was a nightmare. This defiantly help ease the transition and gained us a friend in the process. If your ever in our neck of the woods let us no so we can pay back the favor! See you at champs!

3015- Thanks for practicing with us at 340's build space. The same offer is always extended to you. See you at champs!

All teams that competed at the regional and event staff-
Thanks for welcoming us with open arms. We felt like we were welcome from start to finish. We received numerous awards from teams and even though we received zero first awards these will be cherished just as much as those would have been.

Lastly if you ever have the chance to go to FLR and are on the fence about doing so go. Its a blast and you defiantly will not regret it.

If I remember correctly, that was the match that our intake broke (plastic eye bolts shattered), and the other alliance won by a last second truss. It goes to show that OPR based predictions this year don't necessarily hold as much ground as they did in previous years. But either way, the 2791/1551/5349 alliance performed very well and got a win out of it.

Re: Fingerlakes Regional:2014

On behalf of Team 341, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone that made FLR such a great event.

*The volunteers were so helpful, understanding, and flexible in the most difficult of circumstances.

* The Teams of the Finger Lakes Regional were truly gracious. Our team felt completely at home in Rochester. Every team extending a warm welcome and a helping hand.

* The competition was absolutely top notch and every match was a battle. Our goal in traveling to outside regionals is to get knocked around by some unfamiliar, high level teams. The teams of FLR did not disappoint. The robots of the winning and finalist alliances were clearly the best robots at the competition and they proved it on the scoreboard. Team 1507 is just a juggernaut and Team 20 has one of the fastest transitions from pick up to scoring that I have witnessed.

* Also congratulations to Team 340 and Team 1511 on your EI and CA Awards. There were no teams more deserving than you. It was a pleasure to get to know you a little bit.

* Congratulations to Justin Montois on winning the WFFA for Finger Lakes. It was an honor to stand on the field with you during the ceremony.

* And one final acknowledgement to "Angry Eric" Ekhardt the Best MC on the Planet. You Rock!

I'm a little late to the game here, but it still needs to be said. This was the best FLR yet, and continues to be the best regional I've ever been a part of!

For those that don't recognize me, I was the CSA at the event. All these teams kept me so incredibly busy, but I wouldn't have it any other way! I made so many new friends that I don't even know where to begin. I didn't have a single bad experience with a team this year. You were all so easy to work with and so willing to ask for and accept my help. It was truly a humbling experience, and is exactly why I keep coming back to do this.

A huge congrats to everyone that won those trophies and blue banners. Every last one was well deserved. The competition at this event was tough, and it made it just that much better. I can't wait for next year!

Best of luck to all those that are going to St. Louis! If you see me walking around, be sure to say hi! I'll be the one in the neon orange CSA hat!

On a side note, I'm still trying to find my way down to St. Louis for Championships. See this thread for further information!

Thank you guys, it meant a lot to me to be able to accept the award from so many Woodie Flowers Award winners who I have looked up too so much.

The 10th Finger Lakes Regional was awesome. I am convinced that we have among the best Volunteers in FRC many of which that have been involved at FLR since the beginning.

I want to thank all teams for a great event but a few I want to mention specifically...

Thank you to teams 3015 and 3044 for creating a really fun and competitive alliance. Though we come up just short it was a ton of fun and we really enjoyed playing with you both.

Congrats to Teams 1507, 20 and 378 on their FLR win. 1507, you guys are the best and we were happy to play you in the finals. Using your timeout to ensure it was 3v3 the rest of the way through the finals is a testament to the respect our two teams have for one another. We wish you the best at champs. Team 20, you continued your domination from Tech Valley and earned your second blue banner for good reason. You have an incredible machine and good luck at Champs. Thanks to all 3 teams for completing the slowest finals handshake ever ;)

Teams 801 and 1592, you guys are just awesome. The bond that was created from our practice day on Tuesday at our shop to the 3 days at FLR I know will last for years to come. You guys were awesome on the field and off and I hope we can find an event to attend together next year in Florida. Thanks for everything.

Congratulations to Team 1511, Rolling Thunder on their Chairman's Award win. Our two teams have forced each other to get better and better each year and it's paying off for both. Good luck in St. Louis.

This regional was once again amazing. A special thanks goes out to our awesome alliance partners 340 and 3044. 340 is the only team I know that can replace a main drive shaft in 6 minutes.

Great job to the regional winners 1507, 20, and 378. You guys were a very good alliance and you showed it.

Also thank you to all the volunteers that make this regional one of the best ones in the country year in and out.

Hi all,

Team 5349 says "thank you" and we had an awesome time at FLR! The robots were all just "whoaaa good" and I for one learned a TON.

To teams 1592 & 801 - You guys are AWESOME & my heros! My whole team really appreciated how much time you spent with us and how much you taught us in the three days! Dude - you rocked our world - thanks very much for all of your help! At one point we had about *10* - yes *10* 1592 & 801 team members all around our robot - making it better! Wow!

To all the teams - It was an honor to be at the event with you! Thanks for making it a great event! I'll NEVER forget it!

Sincerely,
Parker & all of 5349

It was truly our honor to meet you and "all" of 5349. To see you standing tall as the 7th Seed Alliance Captain shows that FIRST is just as much about heart as it is about hardware. You inspired us and we will be telling your story for years to come. I expect to hear of your successes in future seasons and if you ever find yourselves in Florida, there are a couple of teams that will welcome you with open arms.

Now that you have spread your wings, it is time to soar.

Re: Fingerlakes Regional:2014

2791 had a great time at the Finger Lakes Regional! Even though we haven't competed here in six years, teams still graciously welcomed us to this regional like we'd always been there. FLR is an exciting event and one of the most competitively level events I've been to.

I'd like to thank 341 for picking us and 4930 for joining our alliance. After our disappointing performance at Tech Valley, no one had any idea where we would end up getting picked at Finger Lakes. Our goal was to play our truss shooting and assist game as much as possible, hoping a smart finisher would take notice, and that's exactly what happened. The entire alliance needed to play at the absolute top of their game to beat the powerhouse alliance of 1507 / 20 / 378, and while we couldn't quite get past them we still put up a valiant, exciting effort. Thanks again for the opportunity to play with you guys in elims; I hope we get the chance to do that again someday.

Special mention goes to 1592 and 2340 for helping us out with parts when we broke our bumpers Friday afternoon. Right after playing a match against us, we noticed one of our bumper corners was dangling off the robot, and we only had two matches to fix it. 1592 quickly got us some aluminum angle to make a quick reinforcement. After the next match, we used more aluminum angle and plate to strengthen all of our bumper corners. Thanks to 2340 for getting us as many wood screws as we could possibly need in exactly the right size!

The winning alliance of 1507, 20 and 378 was incredible. These are some of the smartest teams in FIRST in terms of strategy and it showed on the field. Who else would use their alliance partner as a stand in for a low goal??? Incredible strategy If we can't win it all, it's always great to watch 20, undoubtedly our best friends in FRC, win as usual. There's no doubt in my mind at this point that 20 is a powerhouse team - they have won 4 of the last 5 regionals they have attended, with their only regional loss being the result of having to play with the shakiest team in the region :). If 20 and 1507 aren't on your radar going into Champs, watch out - there's a good chance one of these great machines will be on Einstein.

I'll wrap things up now (something about "a test in 4 hours..."), but I did want to give special mention to 3044. They didn't have quite the smooth start they had at RPI, but this team is learning more and more how to find a way to win on any alliance. This is their third Finals appearance in 3 years, and certainly not the last. We look forward to playing with you guys again soon.

This event is the end of 2791's regular season, but we are hoping to get in to IRI this year. If we're really lucky, we'll see some of you guys there, if not, the Ruckus is just six short months away...

I can't believe the only footage of Finals-3 on YouTube misses the shot where 1507 uses 378 as their hard stop. I only got to see it from behind the driver station.

Team 20 has FINALLY uploaded eliminations from FLR on our YouTube channel. We also have all of Tech Valley Elims and most of Tech Valley Quals.

We're TeamTwentyRocketeers on YouTube.

For those of you doing pre-scouting for championships, you might want to check out Finals 1-3. That's definitely our best match of eliminations.

Since then, we've made some interesting changes and practiced both our forward and trussing game.
We're ready to make Archimedes interesting (along with our alliance partners in FLR eliminations, 378!)
