Engineering Awards Quinfecta
At the LA regional this year, 330 won the Leadership in Control Award for the first time in team history. We've now won at least one of each of the 5 technical awards (Creativity, Engineering Excellence, Industrial Design, Leadership in Control, Quality) This made me want to look at how many other teams have won at least one of each. I used Team 358's award database
Through the end of the 2013 season, there are 35 teams that have completed the Engineering Awards Quinfecta. Code:

Is the Excellence in Engineering Award equivalent to Delphi's other awards they offered in the past (Driving Tomorrow's Technology, for instance)?

It looks like Team 696 is missing the creativity award. We still need to win that award to get the Quinfecta.

Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
Hi Joe,
We got our first Industrial Design award at Gull Lake this year so by my research we have all five now but the one I am most proud of is the Engineering Excelence award we got in 2011 at Champs. The same year we met the BeachBots and were alliance partners in Archimedes. Good Luck and I hope to see you guys in St Louis again!! |

Hey Joe,
Your friend Dave decided that we had to be on that list. So.. with my ancient memory and Dave's persistence we managed to find the trophies in our lab to make the quinfecta. Until this year we were short a Quality award. So with that win, it looks like Team 294 gets to join the elite quinfecta list. Awesome! |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
308 joined the club this year! We won Engineering Excellence at Howell in Week 3 this year. Previously we won Creativity in '03 & '06, Imagery in '09, Industrial Design in '01, Leadership in Controls in '00 (x2) and '11, and Quality in '10 & '12.

Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
Joe,
Team Tators 2122 was honored to receive the Innovation in Control award at Utah in week 3, thus completing the quinfecta. |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
1058 got up to four of the 5 this year. We have won Innovation in Control, Creativity, Quality and Excellence in Engineering.

Very cool thread Joe!
It looks like 1678 has joined the Quinfecta Club this year! With the Creativity Award at Inland Empire and the Engineering Excellence Award at Sacramento, we now have exactly one of each of the Engineering Awards Quinfecta! Also, interesting point, each one of our 5 Engineering Awards is associated with one of our 5 Regional Wins in 1678's history. frclinks.com/t/1678 -Mike |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
I am proud to say that Team 271 is also in the Quintfecta Club! Our first award in each category are as follows:
GM Industrial Design - 2003 - SBPLI Long Island Regional Delphi Driving Tomorrow's Technology - 2007 - SBPLI Regional Rockwell Innovation in Control - 2008 - NYC Regional Xerox Creativity - 2009 - NYC Regional Delphi Engineering Excellence - 2010 - SBPLI Regional Motorola Quality - 2014 - SBPLI Regional It's an honor to be in a category with such great names in FIRST. |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
Looks like 20 joined the club this past weekend with our Industrial Design Award at the Finger Lakes Regional!
Our awards: Delphi "Driving Tomorrow's Technology" Award (New England/CT Regionals '06, '07) Quality Award (Boston Regional '08, WPI Regional '13, CT Regional '13) Creativity Award (WPI Regional 2010) Innovation in Control Award (Tech Valley Regional '14) Industrial Design Award (Finger Lakes Regional '14) |

I'm not going to name names or point fingers, but IMHO, there have been bots that won creativity that weren't all that great... not "bad", but to the point where the creativity almost or sometimes did hamper performance. I've also seen winning bots that were very good performers (such as 469 in 2010). It's like patents... practicality and performance don't necessarily count, it's originality (which pretty much requires creativity) that is the criteria. Good luck on getting the award in the future! |

Thinking about this further, I think the issue is more on own end. I believe our students talking with the judges are stressing the specific points of the design related to the Egineering Excellence, Industrial Design, Quality, Controls aspects...and not the Creativity side of the equation. I might try to discuss this with our pit team to see if we can stress some of the more creative aspects of the robot to see if we can achieve the Creativity Award. |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
177 is only missing "Leadership in Controls"
We recieved the Delphi "Power to Simplify" award at the Championship in 1999 so you probably missed it. This begs the question does anyone have the Championship Quinfecta? We are 3/5 missing Leadership in Control" and Creativity. |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta

As for championship: 233 is only missing Creativity at Championship. 33 is missing Creativity and Controls 1717 is missing Engineering Excellence and Industrial Design 2056 is missing Creativity and Industrial Design 126 is missing Engineering Excellence and Industrial Design 233 has the most Championship Engineering awards, at 5, 33 and 1717 have 4. |

Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
33 has also won the Imagery Award twice at CMP.
I am not sure if any other team has won 6 judged awards at CMP. One thing I will say about the Quinfecta, The Creativity and Controls award are often given to call attention to one unique robot feature or function. Industrial Design, Quality, and Engineering Excellence seem to be better indicator of overall awesomeness. These awards also correlate to high OPR, and are better indicators of greatness. So while 67 has not won Creativity, it is probably because they always have lots of great things on their machine. |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
125 looks to be missing quality.
Creativity (2010 Boston) Engineering Excellence (2014 Rhode Island) Industrial Design (2011 Boston, 2013 Pine Tree, 2014 Northeastern) Innovation in Control (2011 Bayou) Hopefully our robot won't spontaneously combust at Events 4 and 5 of the season. |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
I'm exited to say that team 2471 won the industrial safety award and the innovation in control award at the Wilsonville district competition.
That adds us to the list!:D |

157 still has yet to win the Industrial Design Award. That's the only one keeping us from the "Quinfecta" (Neat word :) )
Hopefully next year we can join the Group! |

One of these years we can hopefully stand out better in Creativity/Control. 2x Quality and 2x Industrial in one season isn't bad though.

Our Creativity and Programming get wrapped up in the descriptions of other awards but maybe we should stress those words a little better. I lost track how many times we had the word "Quality" in our 2012 technical documents for the judges and we figured out why it may have been a bad idea. :p |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
1714 MORE Robotics joined the quinfecta club by winning the Creativity Award at Lake Superior this year. Way to Learn MORE, Give MORE, Be MORE!
I always joke that its hard to tell what their robot does because its invisible :D |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
1058 is still searching for Industrial Design to finish our quinfecta. Hopefully it comes soon!
|
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
I was expecting to see 1519 on the list of 'have 4, searching for the 5th' teams but was surprised we weren't... turns out we only have 2!!
I feel like we usually win a technical award, but turns out we've been getting a fair number of non-technical awards (EI, Entrepreneurship, Gracious Professionalism, Chairmans) in recent events... of which I'm also very (very!) proud, but I admit I'd like to further our suite of tech awards... So far only: Engineering Excellence: 3x (2014 NE CMP, 2013 NCR, 2010 NCR) Innovation in Control: 2x (2015 GSD, 2010 GSR) I admit we usually lack something highly creative, but I feel like our quality and industrial design are usually there... although probably smaller than our controls and 'engineering' elements. Back to the technical-award-drawing-board... :-/ |

As of this week, 2791 just needs Innovation in Control to complete the quinfecta. I'm pretty psyched about that. 1 Creativity - 2012 Connecticut 1 Engineering Excellence - 2013 WPI 3 Quality - 2013 BAE, 2014 FLR, 2015 Tech Valley 1 Industrial Design - 2015 FLR |
Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
After reading this thread I'm even more enthused about 3481's surprise, at least to us, first-time wins this season of Quality at Alamo and Industrial Design at Hub City.
These two awards in Texas are usually won by a group of 4-5 teams that we admire and look up to and winning them as a garage-based team with zero mechanical engineer mentors has been an awesome and rewarding experience for our students. Well... two down and three to go and maybe we can join the club in the near future.... ;-) --Michael Blake |

Bringing back this thread, 868 just joined the club, winning the quality award at Walker Warren, anyone else join it this year?

Re: Engineering Awards Quinfecta
3419 is proud to have entered this club this weekend, I believe as it's youngest member. And we've accomplished it all in a 3-year span:
2016 Tech Valley - Creativity 2016 NYC - Quality 2015 Greater DC - Quality 2015 NYC - Innovation in Control 2014 NYC - Industrial Design 2014 Greater DC - Excellence in Engineering (also 2013 NYC - Innovation in Control) I'm very proud of our student's achievements. In describing the Creativity Award at Tech Valley, the MC said something along the lines of "They said a pneumatic swerve couldn't survive Stronghold, but 3419 proved them wrong." That brought a large smile to our faces! |
