Multi-Ball Autonomous Club

As the season is coming to a close, many of us have seen teams score more than one ball while in autonomous mode. I noticed the thread for double-sided intakes, but didn’t see one for multi-ball autos (forgive me if I simply missed it).

What teams have you seen that have completed a two ball auto in competition? Three ball?

Zealii 10-04-2014 14:54

Team 16 was able to do a two ball both hot autonomous at the Queen City Regional almost every time.

I know at Arizona us 842 as well as 1492 and 1212 had successful 2 ball autonomous modes. 4183 were close but weren't quite able to do it.

Our alliance partners the RoboBees were able to hit their two hot ball auto everytime durring ellims, but a few times the hot goal switching of the feild was off so only one ball was counted as hot.

2363 has used our 2 ball extensively this season. We were also able to use our 2+ ball in Chesapeake twice. What I mean by that is we shoot 2 balls and pick up a third to score immediately after teleop starts.

846 had multiple successful 2 ball autonomous modes during qualification matches at Buckeye and qualification/elimination matches at Silicon Valley.

Other multiple ball autonomous modes that I didn't see mentioned earlier at Silicon Valley included:
971 (2)
368 (2)
1678 (2 and 3, not sure if the 3 worked during any matches)
1323 (2)
192 (2)

At Buckeye:
910 (2)

I honestly can't remember all the ones I saw, but this is what I can remember.

Team 3310 can do 2! We did it at Colorado and didn't have a problem all regular matches until they introduced new balls in eliminations.... The air pressure is different between Dallas and Denver (It really threw our shot off).

Yup, We had a consistent one at Dallas, but didn't get the time we needed to tune it again with the robot changes at LSR. We will be making sure it works at the championship.

4678 had a 2-ball hot working, and I think they're a rookie team. It was pretty consistent, too.

We did our two-ball a couple times at Windsor-Essex and successfully got both in once, but changes to our shooter didn't leave us enough time to do it for the rest of the regional.

I've got a video we recorded at our home town, too, but the we only have one game ball and the other was a deflated exercise ball (so it just missed on the low side, it likely would have gone in if it was a game piece).

2607 has been using their 2 ball auto over all three events we've competed in. It has been more useful than we could ever have imagined, as we have agreed to/been asked to use it in the vast majority of matches we've been in. If memory serves me, we have been about 90% accurate with it, but if it misses, its only ever misses one.

3824 and 2393 both had excellent 2 ball autonomous routines at Smoky Mountains this year! It was really unfortunate that 2393 was unable to qualify for championships this year as they built a very interesting and pretty different robot this year and managed to seed first at SMR. I am sure 3824 will have perfected their already great 2 ball by championships this year!

We did one at Finger Lakes, although they weren't both in the top goal. We just ran our normal top goal routine, but placed a second ball in front of our robot (partner started in the goalie zone). Bulldoze one ball into low goal, score other ball into top goal. Probably not what you were looking for, but I guess it still counts.

Not silly at all. In fact a very good idea too as you still scored a fair amount of points. I like teams that take on programming challenges such as that in their first year.

This definitely counts for something. In fact it was my backup plan in case we encountered a team that had no auto and the programming of the 2-high goal auto wasn't working quite right. Nice thinking.

86 and ourselves only ran 2 ball auto it 1 time. We did not use it after match 40 as there was a 50/50 chance of us having to do a 2 ball clean up and no time to tweak it.

I suspect 233 will have it for off season. I forgot after 11 straight years they wont be going to championships.

We discovered a setting for an 18 foot shot so we may program a 2 ball that is similar to 1421's and should take less than 5 seconds.

1266 can do a 2 ball autonomas, we have to be sorta weird about the way we set it up sometimes but it works. We came really close to winning this match before they had to replay it, and a big reason why was because we made our autonomas shots.

In addition to some other southwest teams, 3476 has a really good 2 ball. Their auto can actually catch and rescore their 1 ball if it misses and lands back into their robot.

Nick, All of elims can be found here. I find myself watching them over and over again, lol.

As far as our 2 ball is concerned... We found by the end of quals in Midwest, it got so much match time, that it was more dialed in then our single ball hot. So After missing the single ball hot in the first quarter, we switched to running the two (and 2451 running one) and didn't miss the rest of the weekend! :D

I apologize if I didn't see others at NECMP.

Team 230 used our 2 ball autonomous in many/most of our qualification matches at NECMP and hit 100% of them.

We ran our 2 ball auto a couple times at MSC and 3 times at lansing district.

Re: Multi-Ball Autonomous Club

Team 2614 took forever to get it but we got 2 ball working for Smoky Mountain Regional. The shots are timed so we shoot 1 in hot and 1 in not regardless of hot goal state at the beginning.

On a side note, was that you who did 2 ball in Michigan Championships in the finals, 314? What made the alliance decide to go 1 2 ball, 1 1 ball, and one mobility-only?

No, it was rush who was shooting the 2 ball at MSC. They had 100% 2-ball stats and guaranteed 1 hot plus bees 1 hot auto ball. Where our 1 ball was not hot detectable so it was worth more points for us to have them run theirs rather than everyone run a 1 ball.

Re: Multi-Ball Autonomous Club

It seemed like perfect autonomous was really rare, though. I watched the finals and I think it was 70-70 coming out of auto both matches (correct me if I'm wrong). Was rush's 2 ball supposed to be 2 in hot? I know at SMR we had issues with the hot target trigger actuating down with enough force to cause the target to oscillate, which caused our robot to see a hot goal when it wasn't really there. Were you guys also deathly afraid of a dead albatross (missed autonomous balls)?

They had a one hot and one not. Anyone correct me if I am wrong but I believe 1718 was the only team with a 2 ball auto with both hot.

Our 2-ball is currently 1 hot, 1 not hot..something we're working on for worlds with improved vision code and timing. We decided to do the 1 2ball, 1 1ball just for accuracy reasons. 314 had a great auton shot % but we knew our 2 ball was 100% and didn't want to have any risk in missing a shot..ever. If they had hot goal detection we would have likely taken the small risk for the the additional 5 points each match. So no, we weren't concerned about a missed shot much.

You are correct, 1718 decided not to use it in elims due to reliability though. (5 pts is not worth the risk of losing 15 and precious time)

C.O.R.E. 2062 is in the club. We had 100% 2 ball auto at Midwest during qualifiers up to semi's when we kept bands stretched too long.

Re: Multi-Ball Autonomous Club

1918 has been using a two ball auto since our first competition. It has worked great and has only missed 2 or three times during our four competitions so far this season. When the hot goal timing on the field is correct, one of the two is in the hot goal. By the time we got to MSC the need to do more than a one ball auto was all but gone, though we did use is a couple of times there.

Re: Multi-Ball Autonomous Club

Team 1810 has completed our two ball autonomous after perfecting it and our pickup mechanisms at the Arkansas Regional. I know we have video footage of it somewhere, we had ours running as well as catching videos running in our pit. Titanium, 1986, had two ball I know. At Arkansas Bomb Squad also has a well developed 2 ball as well as a work in progress on three ball, but one of the balls would end up going over the goals entirely.

Found this example of some 2 ball autonomous action at Queen City Regional. This is the only time 16 missed the 2nd shot but it is still quite amazing. We (3494) also used our 2 ball auto. Congratulations to 16, 447, and 2665 for coming out on top in the end. Best of luck at the Championships! Thank you to 868 and 3506 for a great Saturday afternoon!

Add Sparky 384 to the list, I know the saying just because it worked in the shop doesn't mean it works at the regional - after some tweaking it works. We will continue to work on it at Champs.

It was actually developed earlier, but was inconsistent. We used it at Bridgewater with some success. At MAR Champs we were much better. It was a 1 hot 1 cold autonomous.

I would agree with previous posts, 2590 is the best autonomous in MAR.

We've been running 2-ball both hot since our first event. Our first event we were hit and miss on hot goal detection since our delay for determining the hot goal wasn't dialed in yet. Since the start of Waterford we've only misidentified the hot goal twice: once when our pit crew covered the camera lens with a tie wrap (oops) and on Saturday at MSC when the hot goal didn't illuminate until 1.5 sec into autonomous.

Re: Multi-Ball Autonomous Club

While this is an extensive list of teams that have a multi ball autonomous, there has been one team with one of the most consistent 2 ball autonomous out there. Team 1987 deserves some recognition for their accomplishments in this department. I was at Colorado, and personally I believe that they had the best 2 ball autonomous there. 1619 and 3310 both deserve recognition for having decent 2 ball autonomous at Colorado as well. I look forward to champs when there will be some many great 2 ball autonomous robots and who to choose who will do 2 ball and who will not. Or everyone may go 1 ball. 1987, 1619, and 4153 all did 1 ball at Colorado during eliminations, and of the 4 matches they played, had 2 perfect autonomous periods. It could be a viable strategy for Alliances to consider.

Team 78 AIR Strike has a two ball working. We Shoot from the line and drop our arm, pick up the second and the drive forward for half a second shoot again and then drive all the way forward.

Team 135 is able to do 2 ball in the same goal (1 hot, 1 not) and 2 ball from middle (both hot)

Re: Multi-Ball Autonomous Club

Team 1318 has a two ball autonomous that scores in the second half of autonomous in the same side of the high goal. The best part about it is that it is about 92.3% accurate, as we have missed less than 10 balls in autonomous, out of 130 total. I figure this because we have use our two ball for about 65 out of 69 matches played, and have hardly missed any. Here is a list of the following teams that I've seen who have multi-ball autonomous modes:
16 (3)
488 (2)
610 (2)
254 (3)
1318 (2)
1986 (2) - I think?
4488 (2)

Please add TechFire 225 to the 2 ball hot goal autonomous club!

Spurred on by the success of 2590 and their awesome 2 ball hot goal auton our lead programmer (Andrew Lobos) programmed a Cheesy Poofs (thanks 254) style two ball hot auton. Dialed it in during practice day. Only missing one shot late in the SF's at the Mid Atlantic Regionals.

Re: Multi-Ball Autonomous Club

Team 2168 - Aluminum Falcons, had a 1-ball hot for their first event (Groton District), had a two ball (1/hot, 1/not) in their second event (RI District), and had multiple varients of a 2 ball/2 hot at NE Championship (we shoot two balls in the same hot goal under 5 seconds from the 18ft line).

We predominently shot the 2-ball auto at NE Champs with pretty good accuracy. We made the second ball 100% of the time, and I think we only missed the 1st ball twice. The first miss was due to an epic block by Redshift goalie bot in Quarter Finals (We scored the second ball around their blocker), and the second 1st ball miss was due to our own misalignment in the first Semifinals match (but we still scored the second ball).
