Can anyone win engineering excellence at worlds or does your team have to have won the award at a regional?

I believe the answer is anyone is eligible, especially because all the Regional level winners aren't at Championship. As far as I'm aware, Chairman's, Dean's List and Woodie Flowers are the only Championship awards that require winning at a lower level competition.

You don't have to win one at regionals or districts. We won it in 2011 at the championship and had not received that award in districts or MSC that year.
We were stunned to say the least.

Engineering Inspiration has to have been won previously to qualify at the World Championship.

Can you specify a rule to back this up? I don't believe this is true, even if it generally applies as a rule of thumb.

Team 1629 won Engineering Inspiration in 2012 without winning at the Regional Level.

It's typically easier to win an award you have previously won (at a district or regional level). But as far as I know, the only awards that you need prerequisite wins for are Chairman's and WFA.

I would have thought that this would be easy to find. Like in the competition manual or on First's web site under award descriptions. It is amazing how little is written down about EI. Any of the awards for that matter. This is more of an observation than a criticism. ::rtm::

And this goes for other submission only awards like entrepreneurship? I can't seem to find out if they only look at submissions from teams who have already won this award.

Just a comment.
There is the Engineering Inspiration award.
There is also the Excellence in Engineering award.

They have different definitions and criteria.

We were the 2013 Excellence in Engineering Award winners at Championships, but did not win the award previously at any regional event.

Since 2010, everyone that won Engineering Excellence at the championship did not win it at a regional.

I was talking to a student on a rookie team in PNW a few days back and they were shocked when I told them that Rookie All Star and Engineering Inspiration winners compete with their robots at Champs regardless of their performance qualifications, and that you didn't have to win an award at the District Championship to qualify for it at St. Louis. It's amazing what gets around.

To be fair that's how districts and DCMPs work.

If you win RAS or EI at a district you only compete for the award without your robot at DCMP, unless your robot also qualified via points or Chairman's.

However if you win EI or RAS at your DCMP, you compete with your robot at Worlds.

It's still possible to win entrepreneurship even if you didn't win it at an event earlier this season. They will most likely start with the teams that HAVE won it, and you will have to really woo the judges to overcome their advantage, but it is possible.

Of the 4 division Engineering Excellence winners in 2014, only 868 won it at a regional.
