1678/368/4171 played excellent defense and forced our alliance to drop points on our cycles throughout the match. On the first cycle we lose out on 20 points when 4171 blocks 1662 from inbounding. On the second cycle we lost out on 10 points because 1678 and 368 played excellent defense on 971 and prevented them from trussing. For the third cycle, the stellar counter defense from 1678 dragged both 254 and 971 into a corner to try to stop 368, causing us to miss another 20 point assist. The most amazing thing is that 1678/368/4171 remained patient and continued to gather 3 assist cycles while playing defense, allowing them to catch up over the course of the whole match. There were amazing plays from the blue alliance in this close match. The fluid transitions from offense to defense and back from both 1678 and 368 were a scary sight to see.

I'll throw in the Inland Empire finals. 399 and 1678 and their third partner put on an absolute clinic, including two truss-and-catch in the same cycle.

MSC QF1-1 Replay 2.

#1 seeded alliance 1718, 67, 74 falls to the #8 seeded alliance 910, 548, 4362. Final score of 210 - 275, no fouls.

Good defense played on both sides. Good offense played by the shooters of both alliances. Quick inbounding on both sides. Differing strategies for both sides. Great match to watch.

Wow that was an incredible match. And to think I hadn't watched MSC quarters yet. Time to start!

If you're looking for heavy defense and good strategy, look at the NECMP from week 7. I doubt any other region has more defense than NE.

Im amazed that no one had mentioned this yet. Prior to this match, there were two matches played, both won by the 8th seed. However, both were declared to have a field fault. Then, they won again. So the 8 seed actually went 3-2 in their quarters, but two of their wins didn't count. And the wins were by very large margins - not just a few points.

The previous two matches had pretty glaring field faults in autonomous mode that caused the #1 alliance to miss nearly all their balls and spend time clearing them. The #8 seed did a fantastic job but you shouldn't make it seems like the replays weren't warranted or that the #1 seed didn't deserve to win. The field faults clearly contributed to the very large margins in the first two matches.

And the red alliance missed all three balls in auto due to the field fault, which is death in this game.

The blue alliance knows the first two "wins" weren't legitimate. The third was very much so.

We (2485) worked extremely well throughout eliminations at both San Diego and Las Vegas with 987. I'd point you specifically to the final match at NVLV, in which our shooter broke (as you can see in autonomous) and we had to play as essentially an assisting and blocking robot when we had been acting as the final shooter throughout elims. 987 picked up the ball (no pun intended) flawlessly, navigating around incredibly tough defense and at throwing an inbound halfway across the court over two opposing robots with 10 seconds left, then navigating more defense and scoring to clinch the match.

EDIT: I'd like to add a shout-out to 2478; without their brilliant inbounding, we'd never have had the level of success we did in elims.

Indeed NECMP had some of the best defensive matches of the year it was awsome to be part of that

One of my favorite matches so far was Semifinal 1 - 2 at the Lone Star Regional. 3847, 4587, and 2881 worked great together, alternating from offense to defense and all around playing the game well to take one match off of the number one seed of 148, 118, and 2585. I believe there was one regular foul, but regardless it wouldn't have changed the outcome of the match. The last second truss also helped :) Both alliances were great to watch.

Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.

Here is a good example, in my opinion (though biased...) of an alliance working through heavy defense and incorporating all three alliance members. Both 16 and us (447) saw double teams while either attempting to score or truss and was able to successfully push through the defense. On the similar thought to Chris' we would also go into defense mode once we no longer had the ball. By either getting between the ball and robot or forcing an opponent out of position.

Teams:
16, 447, 2665 v. 868, 3494, 3506
Queen City Regional Finals 3

1629, 2363, 623, all played really well together at the Chesapeake Regional. Each team complimented each other very well. When one was being defended the other picked up the assists or scoring or defense. It was really fun to watch. You can find all the match videos on Triple Helix's YouTube channel.

This is entirely correct, although the #1 alliance DID get to see the #8 alliance's strategy on three occasions, developing a counter-strategy for QF1-2 and QF1-3. I feel like the #8 seed got the short end of the stick here.
