Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
Hey guys, I have spent a lot of time on TBA just pre scouting for champs and have yet to find a truly fantastic match where one alliance works together around heavy defense and plays the game how the GDC wanted it to be played. If you know of any fantastic matches could we collect them in this thread?

Waterloo Semis 2 Match 1
254, 2056, and 865 play the game how I believe the GDC wanted it to be played. They also played well even though they had defense on them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94UGXIq6jUA#t=331 |

Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
For us, the moments you don't have the ball, you should be playing "smart" defense on your alliance. There are several of these moments for us, a quick nudge on a blue robot, getting in between the robot and ball. Not only was defense being played on us, but we dished out defense too. Finding partners that are good in each position are key in the game for sure. But one of the matches I enjoy watching is the Quarters 1 in St. Louis. Being the "Truss" robot, I feel like we play the role of "big brother", able to help both our inbounding partners and scoring partners. If the trussing didn't work, foregoing the truss and passing on the ground still works for 40 points...

PNW Champs semi finals or finals.
Auburn District semi finals or Finals 1983 and 1318 worked beautifully together at both auburn and champs to come out with two wins. The duo got lots of practice together at auburn which was for our scouting team to justify picking the ?34? seed as our 1st pick even though they had been plagued with technical problems all weekend and were on nobody else's radar |

I'll throw in the Inland Empire finals. 399 and 1678 and their third partner put on an absolute clinic, including two truss-and-catch in the same cycle.

If you're looking for heavy defense and good strategy, look at the NECMP from week 7. I doubt any other region has more defense than NE.

Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
We (2485) worked extremely well throughout eliminations at both San Diego and Las Vegas with 987. I'd point you specifically to the final match at NVLV, in which our shooter broke (as you can see in autonomous) and we had to play as essentially an assisting and blocking robot when we had been acting as the final shooter throughout elims. 987 picked up the ball (no pun intended) flawlessly, navigating around incredibly tough defense and at throwing an inbound halfway across the court over two opposing robots with 10 seconds left, then navigating more defense and scoring to clinch the match.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dYBfBvya9w EDIT: I'd like to add a shout-out to 2478; without their brilliant inbounding, we'd never have had the level of success we did in elims. |

Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
One of my favorite matches so far was Semifinal 1 - 2 at the Lone Star Regional. 3847, 4587, and 2881 worked great together, alternating from offense to defense and all around playing the game well to take one match off of the number one seed of 148, 118, and 2585. I believe there was one regular foul, but regardless it wouldn't have changed the outcome of the match. The last second truss also helped :) Both alliances were great to watch.

Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
Here is a good example, in my opinion (though biased...) of an alliance working through heavy defense and incorporating all three alliance members. Both 16 and us (447) saw double teams while either attempting to score or truss and was able to successfully push through the defense. On the similar thought to Chris' we would also go into defense mode once we no longer had the ball. By either getting between the ball and robot or forcing an opponent out of position.

Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
1629, 2363, 623, all played really well together at the Chesapeake Regional. Each team complimented each other very well. When one was being defended the other picked up the assists or scoring or defense. It was really fun to watch. You can find all the match videos on Triple Helix's YouTube channel.

Not necessarily the best alliance, but 1625 shows how to play offense (inbound and truss) and defense (setting picks, or clearing a path).

Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
Windsor Essex Regional - SF 1-2
This set of matches shows how an alliance of underdogs (blue - 4525, 4917, 4519) up against the powerhouse alliance (red - 2056, 1114, 5288) can hold their own, given good strategy and smart drive teams. While blue was significantly out-matched offensively, all three robots on the blue alliance were able to dynamically switch roles throughout the match when 1114 and 2056 were laying down some big defence. Blue took 1 match off of red, and the other two matches were both extremely tight matches - one of which was lost due to a 20pt foul. |
Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
Here's part of a match where we managed to do a 60-point cycle, under a bit of defense on the final pass. It looks like we cooperated pretty well in that match (as well as in many others, by the way!)

Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
Match 68 on Archimedes was a really consistent cycle with 2056 inbounding the ball and shooting over the truss to the human player. 329 would get the ball from the human player and use their catapult to give it back to the human player who would give it to 399 which put it in the low goal.

Re: Best examples of a match where robots work together against defense.
Qual 109 on Archimedes was really fun to be a part of.
33 would inbound and truss to the HP. 1671 immediately received and shot the ball across the white zone. And 1625 did a quick 10 point shot from the red alliance line. 310 points no penalties. |

Michigan Qualification match 110. Red alliance pulls the "900 strategy", as I call it, with 107 shooting the ball from the feeder station, over the truss, to the far HP. The HP then feeds the ball to 1506 in the middle zone, which outtakes to 67 for quick 3 ball assist cycles. Thought it was interesting, just because in the past I saw 2 assist cycles with that strategy the majority of the time, and a defensive bot. |

There was quarterfinals 3-1 on curie. There was some defense on both sides, but the most interesting part was the ability for each robot to swap roles on the fly.
