Robot Crates at the CMP
I found myself in the Pits on Wednesday morning before the action began.
http://imgur.com/a/v9TcU Thought of maybe having a contest or poll about which Robot Crates people found most appealing.....but TMW, still recovering from this wonder filled season. So, if you don't mind perusing the pics (some dupes, some blurry) Pick your five favorite crates, and your favorite rookie (>4900) Or just enjoy another creative aspect of all of our fol-de-rol. |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
The team 1640 crate (blue with the handprints on it) is from 2010. The hand prints are from team members. Had you go to the side, you would have seen the famous "Hope is not an engineering strategy"
And it was easy to pick out Rolling Thunder (1511) camo-crate! |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
Well obviously the first one is the best (sarcasm). I think it needs some LEDs though, any idea about the legality of that?

My personal favorite is Waffle's Crate. It's just so... delicious. The rest of my top 5 (in no particular order) is The Children Swamp's Crate, Makeshift's Crate, Exploding Bacon's Crate and D-Bug's Crate. They all embody their team logo in an aesthetically pleasing manner in my opinion. |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
I find 1714's crate to be humorous due to their lack of metal and heavy use of plastics on their robots.
|
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
Behind the obvious superior first crate in the album, 987, 4499, 4476, 3937, 67, 126, 1687, 1592, 1986, 811, 910, and 254 had the best looking crates imo. Maybe just because they look newer/less junky lol, although some were very well designed (4476)
|
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
My favorites, in no particular order, were:
4488 (I thought the wave was really cool-looking) 987 (Gorgeous lettering) 4499 (Pretty circuits!) 5125 (The lettering was neat) 111 (The rainbow letters and the wood were cool) 1678 (I just really love their logo) 910 (Also their logo too) 25 (Pretty turtle!) 1241 (Cute lettering!) |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
I don't know why, but the 111 crate looks familiar...
I like the Poof's crate, it stands out, especially with their logo Winnovation's crate is slick, orange/black tie-die with their logo |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
The robot crate is a lost art lost in the switch to bagging. Team's used to do some incredible things with their crates back in the day. You can't converI a bag into a pit.
love Waffle's crate. |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
Team 2444 used one of our old crates.
We told them to cover up our 359 number so that the shippers wouldnt confuse it with ours. Looks like they did a nice job and listened.:) |

Waffle Crate really affected me too. I have made my list, but I am waiting to see what other viewers think. I'll give you one: http://i.imgur.com/5hvwT2i.jpg Whoever did this knows something about the visual arts. |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
254 and 2175 (the calculator) had really nice crates. Also, the really blurry one with Party Goat as well as team 25.
And of course, the Companion Cube. |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
A great collection!
I look more for cool paint and theme rather than a cool crate (aka made of fancy materials). I have a special biased love of our crate (1511) for the camo and the 10th anniversary logo. And for Rookie Team 4930 who packed their robot in the traveling Finger Lake Regional Rookie All-Star Crate. It was built to be used each year by the new FLR Rookie All-Star and has a list of all of the Regional RAS winners painted on the inside of the door. My other favorite paint jobs! 4707, 4488 (WAFFLE!), 1592 (Bionic Tigers), 1640 (Sab-BOT-age), 2283 (Panteras), 25 (I love the turtle!) and 1902 (Exploding Bacon). |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
Love the Waffle crate! And I think 179's is cool too - swampthing inside, DO NOT FEED!
Also, how long have some older teams had their crates? Just curious. |

Who's crate has over 100,000 miles on it? http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...9&postcount=20

I love 3504 's tardis crate, 4039's rainbow crate, 1692's tiger crate (wow that is vibrant!), 25's flying turtle crate, and I think it's super cute that 4645 put pictures of their team members on theirs <3

My Five Favorites:
W.A.F.F.L.E.S. Team 4476. Trompe L'oeil rules http://i.imgur.com/igAbrxk.jpg Party Goat Team 190 Gompei and the Herd. The blurry Photo adds to the art. http://i.imgur.com/FjLklh7.jpg Team 4039 Makeshift Great Palette and geometry. http://i.imgur.com/iKc5ABh.jpg Team 2016, Mighty Monkey Wrenches. Very Piet Mondrian http://i.imgur.com/rXc6qYM.jpg My Grand Prize Winner: 4707 TEAM FORCE from the Dominican Republic. http://i.imgur.com/0QZyB3a.jpg Structural Greek Revival references http://i.imgur.com/5hvwT2i.jpg Dreaming Robots. This team's crate has a real art vibe going on. The best Rookie Team crate: 4930 Electric Mayhem http://i.imgur.com/UPPiumL.jpg Which I have heard was made for them by 1511 Rolling Thunder after their Rookie All-Star Award at FLR. With Bag and Tag, I fear that this art form may eventually pass, but for now.... |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
So why wait for FIRST to start a new award? CD community can vote and give out an award "CD Popular Award" for championship crate. If any of you work for U-Line or any other company dealing with packing/shipping (no, not FedEx, they are already supporting), get their sponsorship for duct tapes and zip ties and send to the winning team.

EDIT: I've added it up, and if we have used the same crate since our rookie year (2006) then it will have travelled close to 70,000 miles by the time it returns to us this year. So not quite there yet (although it has gone over 100,000 kilometres!). I also didn't take into consideration the fact that it normally goes to somewhere like Memphis first and then gets driven to its final destination. Maybe we have hit it. |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
Any suggestions for crates to be photographed at this years CMP?

Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
Since we are a international team we need to ship our entire robot and pit in one crate.
The first two years we’ve had a home made crate which we donated to Impossible Robotics this year. For ourselves we had a bigger plan in mind. 6 Months ago we got in touch with Faes Cases. They are professionals in making custom flightcases and together with their engineers and our students we’ve designed a multifunctional flightcase which will be extremely useful during not only competitions but also business fairs and other demo’s throughout the years. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Faes Cases BV. for this wonderful collaboration! Here are some pictures :) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...82720& type=1 |

Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
Get 1296! Our orange camo crate may be difficult to find though ;P
|
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
649 will be going for the first time in 5 years, and I'd say our crate (assuming it didnt get destroyed in shipping) looks really nice. Some lasercutting and hours with a tiny paintbrush were involved :)
|
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
4595! (the team wants to see it safely arrived as its our first time to CMP)

Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
967, it is the same crate we have been using for the past 13 years (we also want to make sure it is all in one piece).
|
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
We never use the same crate, mostly because the robots we've built in the past haven't been as big as our 5-6 foot tall robot this year.
I have to say, ours isn't the best, and I wouldn't be surprised if it got banged up. Personally, I like team pink's crate, I got to see it up close in person the day before it shipped as we shipped it, along with our crate, and a crate from a team in Mexico. |
Re: Robot Crates at the CMP
2015 CMP Robot Crate pictures
2015 CMP Robot Crates Part 2 It was interesting to see how many teams had to augment the height of their crates this year. See 3309. Also surprised by the number of small crates. (900, 5692) Team 999 wrote an appropriate phrase on the front of their crate. 2836 had the classiest crate. Let me know if there are any errors. |
