Team Websites?

What sneaky things have you found when making a team website? My team is using Wordpress for our website.

Re: Team Websites?

Not sure what you mean by "sneaky", but I know our team has used Weebly for our website for the last several years and it's served us pretty well for a free host.

Mostly we've stuck with it because it requires zero HTML knowledge to manage.

We use squarespace and it's really annoying to use, blocks get formatted strangely and it takes a while to figure out how to fix it.
However, it does look pretty good when done.
Here is our team's website:

A couple of our new programmers snuck a game onto our team's website.

Be careful not to lose yourself in the endzone. :D

Our web designer has made a really well-designed and -programmed "meet the robots" section with highlights of each individual robot since our first year in 2008.

Team 1002 uses WordPress for our website. It's pretty simple, and we can have logins for each team lead to add on to their section.

We use WikiMedia for our website. The concept was that this would enable a more collaborative site. Not so sure that worked entirely as planned, but it works a little.

Re: Team Websites?

My team's never been that big on social media, including website. We had a cheap GoDaddy one (that is still sadly our main site) which I believe is basic package. I'm currently working on a new one through Wix because it's free unless you ant and specific designs or a custom domain, but there's a lot of freedoms to creating and designing it. It also comes with a mobile website that you can edit online at the same time which is a pretty cool option.

Re: Team Websites?

We just created a website this year. We ended up using Joomla and found a free hosting website-- a basic template was downloaded and all the css, layout, bottons/menus, and animations were coded to suit the team. It doesn't look the best, in my opinion, but it suits our purposes. :p

I'd say the biggest thing is typography-- changing the text font/size can make the whole website look different without completely redoing previous work. :)

Weebly seems to be a favorite among teams. I have to go try it out sometime. How much will it cost to remove the (.weebly)?

It ranges from $3-$6 per month

Re: Team Websites?

Timeline:
  1. Once upon a time, we used e107 (with a few plugins) for a dual-purpose internal and external website: about us and history pages, forums, image gallery, document repository.
  2. Over time, that started getting punched through with security holes, so we ported the whole thing to vBulletin (with lots of plugins).
  3. We eventually decided that we aught to provide a formal front-end site separate from our internal back-end, so one of the students then developed a full-featured CMS completely from scratch.
  4. When the student in question graduated, we evaluated the custom CMS for long-term maintainability, and discovered that he had installed a backdoor and obfuscated a lot of the key internals. This led to us swapping out the custom front-end site in favor of Joomla.
  5. The Joomla front-end lasted about as long as the custom CMS before we got tired of the mismatch between what we wanted to do with it and the features it offered, so now we're running Wordpress for the front end. This one's still new as of the 2015 season, however, so there's plenty more work to be done.
.

Thoughts about our current setup:
  • Internal forums are a good format for planning & collaboration during the off hours
  • The internal image gallery is internal, so no privacy concerns even though any member can contribute
  • Social media presence: Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, YouTube
  • We use Instagram as an external photo gallery; these pics are curated by mentors, and are automatically echoed across multiple social media platforms
  • All videos are curated by mentors and hosted on YouTube
  • The internal document repository (custom code) was nice, but we ended up pushing it to Google Docs and making it public instead
  • External front-end is all business
  • Forums have had problems with misuse / inappropriate conduct in the past, so only mentors have control there, and all registrations require individual approval
  • Front-end is entirely student-run; mentors' only role there is to sign off on changes

Re: Team Websites?

Team 2614 used to use wordpress until switching to squarespace last year. From a web design point of view, our new website is leaps and bounds ahead from what it used to be. Also, we'll be doing another major update to our website that I don't think we could have done without the squarespace development engine.

We use WIX, it works well for us (although I personally prefer SquareSpace). The main reason we're using it now is because of the browser editor and how well it handles HTML 5. Check it out at www.theflyingtoasters.org

Re: Team Websites?

Our current website team3467.org uses concrete5 but we haven't had all that much success making it customized (using themes and etc.) and looking nice, but it's updated frequently by our team. However if you go to the Robots page of this site, you can interact with 3D models of our 2014 and 2013 robots!

Our "prototype" weebly website team3467.weebly.com looks much nicer but we haven't gotten it linked up with our "professional-looking" domain name.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me as I have worked on both sites.

Team 5418 uses wix; our site is currently hhsrobotics5418.wix.com/home. It's a ridiculous address, and I actually really like the site, but getting a custom domain has been an issue, since we want to set up a host and a domain- this gets pretty expensive. Any questions anoyt the site, feel free to ask! I designed it.

You said that you are using WIX, if that is the case, having a host is not necessary. Also, if you would like to do a domain name, it is about $12 a year for just a standalone domain name. I can not remember if WIX charges to add a domain name to the site.

You have to pay foe premium which is like $13 a month and then the pay the normal yearly domain fee.

Here's our website again

It's not bad even though I know html and css among a few other languages and could have made a good site from scratch, something like wix allows non technical teammates to update it.

A very positive aspect of using Wikimedia is that we have an extremely content-rich website. I had no so much appreciated this when I made the earlier post. The structure is flexible and adding content is fast and painless.

A down-side is lack of "flash". But in the balance, I generally prefer substance over "flash", so I am okay with this decision.

Our school prefers we have a host. Why? I don't know. I personally do not think it's necessary..

I think weebly is a nice platform to use... It's simple to use and can give nice results :) And if you modify the base HTML / CSS code, you can remove all their logos without paying :) Here's our website as an example (work in progress... It's far from being complete...) http://frci.weebly.com

The website people in our team changed/updated our website last season. I don't know what it went from or to, but weebly rings a bell, but I may be wrong. It's a lot simpler and easier to navigate than the old one, with more relevant content.
