Just beware that ATX supplies can be rather noisy (electrically speaking)

Dell broke the color code with a number of models. Not all of them are like this, but many models are. I don't know the extent of the changes, but with some research you could use them.

yeah, but I'm sure they still stuck with an ATX compliant motherboard meaning the pinouts should still be the same even if the colors are wrong. A DMM would be a true test.

Years ago I did a dell power supply in this fashion w/ the wrong color codes and your logic. Worked out just fine, as you suspect.
