2015 Arkansas Rock City Regional
 

The venue for the 2015 Arkansas Rock City Regional will be the Barton Coliseum in Little, AR. The new venue will have more room for teams and will be closer to the interstates in central AR. The event will have a much larger capacity than last year. The event dates are March 4-7, 2015. Please ask any questions here!

Little Rock has a newly renovated downtown with a market district, numerous restaurants, and a trolley system connecting downtown to the nearby Clinton Presidential Library. Little Rock is certainly the most fitting home for the Arkansas Rock City Regional event.

The move to a larger venue is going to allow a lot of growth. We are very excited about this opportunity. We currently have five different states competing at the Rock City Regional, and I know there will be more signing up now and second round. Team 3937 is pumped to be able to compete in this home regional again with some outstanding teams.

2015 Rock City Regional: Pre-Season Scouting Sheet

Over the past few weeks I've been slowly chipping away at making a pre-season scouting sheet for each event our team is attending. I've finally finished it up and figured I'd share it so others can use it as well.

Included in the sheet is basic team information (Team #, Name, Location, Years Experience), Attending Midwest (our other regional), 2014 Performance (Each regional seed and elimination finish, Championship seed and elimination finish with what division), and finally 4-Year Performance Statistics.

That last section is something I kind of created on my own. I know a lot of people have been using "BBQ" to look at a teams recent performance over a few years, but I didn't think that was a great way to look at it as that only accounts for regional championships and it also includes major awards, which don't always translate to performance on the field.

For these reasons I tried to make my own basic statistic. What I did was assigned point values for each finish in eliminations a team can have. They are as follows:

Regional Champion: 1.0
Regional Finalist: .75
Regional SF: .50
Regional QF: .25

Einstein Champion: 4.0
Einstein Finalist: 3.0
Einstein SF: 2.0 (also Division Champion)

Division Finalist: 1.5
Division SF: 1.0
Division QF: .50

Then, once you have a total for a season, you take the last four seasons and add them together. However, I gave multipliers for more recent seasons. This equation ends up looking as follows:

=(4*[2014 Total])+(3*[2013 Total])+(2*[2012 Total])+(1*[2011 Total])

I did this because I thought that recent performance is more important and pertinent to the current/coming season than say 3 years ago. However I still wanted to account for and look at long-term performance. I thought this provided a good balance.

Of course, this is not perfect, and it does not account for strength of event, where a team was picked (captain, 1st pick, 2nd pick, 3rd pick). I just wanted to be able to have a basic statistic that gave me a rough but reasonably accurate idea of how good a team has been over the past 4 years, and based on the trends of the past few years where they might be this year.

Let me know what everyone thinks of this. Also if you see anything that is wrong, let me know and I'll update the information. All of the data was pulled from TBA. Finally, if you think a piece of information should be added to the sheet that is easily and readily available, then let me know and I'll look into adding it.

Note: I thought about taking out the "Attending Midwest" section on this public version, but decided to leave it. I figured anyone who downloads it could change it and update the info for whatever their 2nd event is (and add more columns if they attend more than 2).

I have a venue question that I hope is easy to answer. What size doors (standard building doors, big loading dock doors, etc) are we going to need to move our robot through for load-in or between the pits and the field?

Our robot's fairly tall, so we're trying to plan ahead to make sure the robot's transport-configuration height plus the cart height don't add up to trouble. There's nothing like having to pause for couch-maneuvering to make sure you don't clothesline the robot on the top of the door frame ::ouch::.

Thanks for putting this together. With all the great teams in this event, I had totally missed that Hilltoppers (1732) is coming down and Scream (4522) is coming back. Super excited!

This should be a really competitive event.

FRC 3061 can't wait to attend arkansas this year! Driving 9 hours south is preferable to driving 9 hours north to Duluth. Brr.

Great group of teams! The pits and field are all together. It is a cavernous space. And over 7,000 very comfortable seats - not that most of us get to sit much!

Does anyone know if there will be a machine shop available at Rock City?

The last couple years, we have been at universities and have had to shuttle the parts to another building for machine work. Without a university this time, I'm wondering if we will be able to have a shop at the venue.

The webcast for this regional will be hosted on Team 3937's USTREAM page. It will go live on Friday morning from open ceremonies through close as well as Saturday morning from opening to close. We will be running a beta test on Thursday after lunch for two hours to make sure the stream is consistent and audio levels are set. You will be able to see the stream from the field, but don't get upset if it drops from time to time on Thursday as we optimize the system so Friday and Saturday have no problems. Here is the link.

Hey Allen,

1. This is the feed that will be coming from the production team. It will include the field camera feeds, score overlay, etc. This is just your standard feed that you always see on webcasts.

2. As of right now, we plan on recording and archiving for scouting purposes. This is the plan. We want to have them up with as small a delay as possible, this will depend on the internet capabilities that we will be presented with at the regional. If this isn't possible, then we will upload them that night.

3. I will have to talk with Meredith to see what see worked out with the production team.

If at all possible during matches the full field view is going to be far better for this game. The multi-camera angles won't add much since there are going to be totes obstructing much of the field. I'm also always a proponent of single camera full field streams so I may be a bit bias.

Everybody traveling, especially from the north, be safe, take your time, and leave early if you can. Arkansas roads can be unpredictable in this kind of weather... mostly because we don't get a lot of it, especially in the central part of the state.

We are still planning on archiving the match videos for viewers and scouters on the Breakaway 3937 YouTube channel. As I mentioned in an earlier post, how fast they go up depends on the connection. I do not know what quality we will be streaming. We are merely a proxy, so we are at the mercy of whatever quality we are given from the av team.

Sorry to hijack this thread for a minute with a technical question, but I just got word back from our trailer crew who took everything to little rock last night.
It seems that we've had a leak in our trailer and we had water accumulate in our laptop crate. We have backups of production code, but we're worried it will be difficult to get running on a different laptop should it come to that.
Does anyone know if LabView hardcodes absolute paths into the project files?

In spite of horrific winter weather - freezing rain, then sleet, then snow, now sleet again all day long - we were able to load in 40 robots. There are still teams stuck on the highway in traffic and traveling all night to get here. I pray for their safety and am in awe of their tenacity. But that is what FIRST teams are all about.

We got in yesterday at 3pm, finished the tear down about 5pm, and started the new robot. We got though inspection at 9:15am this morning. We still aren't on the field but it should be soon. Thanks to everyone at the event for coming to check in on us and things.

4329 had a great time at the Arkansas Rock City Regional! The event ran smoothly and it was great to see everyone pitching in to help given the weather issues on Wednesday.

We got to play with and against some very good teams, this was one of the strongest regional events I've attended in some time in terms of team depth.

2481 and 2451 put together an incredible alliance. We especially took some cues on how 2451 and 4522 used the human loader effectively and hope to improve our performance for St. Louis. After some early encoder issues on our drive train and some new drive team learning, we got things going a little too slow & too late. We plan to come out swinging week 4 in St. Louis.

We were honored to receive the Engineering Inspiration award. With so many other deserving teams in attendance it was amazing to win this award and earn a spot at the championship.

Thanks again to the Arkansas planning committee and everyone involved!

Team Titanium (FRC 1986) had a fantastic time at the Arkansas Rocky City Regional this weekend. We loved the venue, the professionalism of all the volunteers and staff, and the opportunity to work with so many great teams. We are glad we made the trip.

Thank you 4330 for choosing us in alliance selection and to 4526 for helping us make all those stacks. What an incredible ride from the lowest score in the first half of the quarters all the way to the finals. This alliance had tremendous heart and a willingness to try anything in an effort to win. (By the way, noodle defense is for real.) We'll see you both at the St. Louis regional.

Congratulations to 2481, 2451, and 1625. That alliance averaged 173!!! in the semi-finals, and would be among the favorites to win any regional in the country. Beautiful machines, and great people too. We look forward to working with each of you again in the future.

Chairman's and EI contenders were everywhere in Little Rock, and hearing 3284 and 4329 awarded made tremendous sense for anybody that has spent time with these two teams. Well deserved, and a pleasure to share the state of Missouri with these exemplary programs.

I'm still recovering from the most intense weekend I've ever had in FRC.

Just getting there was a lot of effort. This was the first time we had ever attempted a full out rebuild of our robot and I'm very happy with results. We went all the way down to just drive rails and built it back up to a full robot.

Thanks to the entire inspection crew, especially Andy Marts (16), and congrats on the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award, and Michael Hartwig (1986) you both put up with us constantly making changes and literally being reinspected before every single match we put the robot on the field. You went out of your way to make an incredibly difficult process a little easier. Thank You.

Thank you 2386 and 16 for selecting us to be on your alliance. There is a lot of risk in choosing a robot that had been build over the past 2 days and we thank you for taking a chance on us. There was a ton of potential on our alliance and I'd be happy to play with both of you again any time, anywhere.

Congratulations to 2481, 2451, & 1625 on winning the event. It was a pleasure getting to know all of you a little better and I wish you all the best the season. If people aren't paying attention to the teams from Illinois they better start.

This weekend was a good reminder of why I love FRC. I can't count the number of teams that offered us help this weekend, with what an entirely voluntary rebuild of our robot. Thank you all for your support and friendship, and we hope to see all again soon.

Thanks to the volunteers running the machine shop and 16 for bringing it down. We had a lot of strange requests and you all delivered every time.

Wow. What a weekend. Started with finding a way to navigate the winter weather conditions and survive a nerve wracking bus ride, to finding a way to navigate the incredibly competitive field of teams and improbably survive the Rock City Regional as champions with our fellow Team Illinois brethren from 2451 and 1625. Amazing. Huge thanks go out to the planning commitee and the plethora of amazing volunteers. The event was ran smoothly and the competition atmosphere was among the best I've experienced in my 7 years of FIRST.

As several people pointed out at various times, the field of teams competing in Arkansas this past weekend was quite possibly the most competitive regional on the 2015 schedule. The entire roster was full of amazing teams. We were thrilled to get to compete with many familiar faces again, as well as make many new friends from the fine crop of teams we had yet to have the pleasure of meeting. Huge thanks and congratulations go out to our fellow Robowinnage alliance partners from 2451 and 1625, as well as finalists 4330, 1986, and 4256. Its always an honor to play with or against all of you guys and thanks for some amazing finals matches! As Aaron pointed out, noodle defense is definitely real and the race to the center cans will become more and more critical as the season goes on and the robot performance curve inevitably goes up. Our goal was to make sure we got 1 of the remaining 2 off the step as soon as tele-op started because we knew 2 would be gone in the blink of an eye in autonomous. Come St. Louis, there won't be a race to be had in tele-op as it'll be complete autonomous warfare over those precious green containers.

Massive congratulations also go out to 3284 on a much deserved Chairman's award! As your video demonstrated, you guys fully represent what FIRST stands for. Absolutely inspiring. Best of luck and can't wait to see you guys in St. Louis, as well.

I knew the 1st seed alliance was going to pick 1625 no matter what if they were still available as soon as 2481 and 2451 teamed up. It's worth a lot to have a team you know you can work with and that you know the capabilities of.

I'm also really scared to see what 1625 comes out swinging with in week 6, because I can assure you they won't be happy with a 24th pick again by any means!

I wish to thank everyone involved in volunteering and organizing the Rock City Regionals! The Snow and Ice made it quite interesting to get there the first couple of mornings.
Team 5437 was thunderstruck and honored to be chosen as the All-Star Rookie Team for the Rock City Regionals. I do not think it has really settled in on the members what has happened. Most of the teams there had more members than we have members and mentors, together. :D
Thank you to TEAM 16 for all the help you have given us. Thank you to TEAM 3612 and TEAM 5006 for your help and continuing kindness AND for great BBQ! Without the help of these teams, we would not be where we are today.
Thank you TEAM 5454 and TEAM 5568 for the comradery that we had at the event and at the BBQ as well.
Thank you, FIRST FRC Teams for making us feel like we are one of you. See you in St. Louis!

Strange question: Did any other teams have multiple members get the flu at the regional? I know some of the illinois teams did.

I don't know about the flu, but almost everyone on our team came down with some kind of cold after the regional.
Remember people, wash your hands when you're at big events like this.
It'll help keep everyone healthy, not just yourself.

No flu but definitely colds for the Canadians.

On behalf of Team 2386, we just wanted to thank EVERYONE involved for putting on such a great regional. Meredith and her crew were awesome! We also hope everyone who managed to make the screening of "Spare Parts" enjoyed it! I know we sure did.
