On a completely different topic but the same sort of issue... WE NEED MORE COMPETITIONS!! This is happening in FLL and Vex (maybe FTC as well?). We are hosting a dual FLL event (32 teams - sharing it with 2085) because not enough folks are hosting events to meet demand. We are hosting multiple Vex events (sharing it with a middle school vex team), and I am flooded with emails from teams that are begging to participate. I am so tempted to start charging extra $$ because the demand is so high!! (I won't do that.)

What you want is districts. Districts in California is what is how we solve the population problem and get more matches.

Since on of our mentors organizes and runs the CO regional I have a little insight into how difficult this is. Regionals are very expensive and it is hard to find a space that is big enough and cheap enough and then staff it with volunteers. It is also challenging to convince people to take 2 days off to volunteer at the regional (thank you, thank you, thank you to those who do every year). And that is just part of what happens locally. Since the field ships on multiple big rig trucks the movement of the fields is no small effort (travelling salesman optimization anyone?). Great job FIRST HQ for making this happen every year!

Agreed; in some ways it's amazing that we have as many events as we do. The volunteers give a ton to make it happen.

I was struggling just to get two!

I know registration fills in a matter of seconds for some events. As soon as it opened, I waitlisted for San Diego, thinking maybe they just hadn't added the spots yet. Then I checked and Ventura showed openings. So I went to register there, and after I had, it confirmed me on the waitlist. At risk of jeopardizing a second regional at all, I registered for Vegas which still had spots open. I called FRC Team support, and they indicated the waitlists were short, and that if I waitlisted for San Diego, I'd likely get in once additional spots were added, because the rookies are not showing up in the quantities expected. So, I went back into TIMS and tried to switch the registration for Vegas back to wait list for San Diego. Can't do it. Can't re-join a waitlist you've previously dropped and FIRST confirms, that's by design. You get one chance to decide where to go. In 13 years of doing FRC, I've never known about this "feature" in TIMS.

They really need to do a preference and lottery system, like FIRST Choice. Or at least something different.

Absolutely! What's the latest on that front... 2016-2017? It is a problem though does span outside of FRC though.

I agree. Boy how things are different these days. I used to have our students and parents plan for where we wanted to go, now I just tell them we will have to see what's available and go from there.

How can someone possibly take a gamble on a waitlist of unknown position and unknown additional capacity forthcoming, and miss out on registering for something that's open now. This system "inhales audibly." Not happy. Vegas it is for now. Our school administration and parents are going to throw a fit.

And also, why did FIRST ever remove that single page that showed all event capacities, number of registered teams, and open spots? We REALLY need that back.

The best way to find out what your chances are of getting in off of the waitlist is to contact someone from your event's planning committee. They can see exactly who is on the waitlist and they have a pretty good idea of which teams they will be adding and in what order.

During the 2013 season, we noticed also that you couldnt resign up for a regional you previously registered for. We were lucky that we didnt have to. We dropped one event to get the other since we noticed the other regional was filling up fast. In fact, we got the very last spot at Boilermaker 2013 1 hour into the registration initial regional sign up. Lucky for us it all worked out.:)

Re: Registration 2015

Seems like finding a second regional this year is tougher for the NYS teams. Any events that had openings filled up quickly in the second registration cycle. Also, with the NE and MAR Districts, attending events in that area is not an option. Just tried to register for our second regional event and got waitlisted not too long after registration opened. I am hoping that we can work with the regional planning committee to see if there are spaces available. It just makes it hard to plan when you don't know if you are going to an event, and the school needs to know where you are going.
I'm hoping the schedule will work out better next year where more events in our area will be available for us to attend.

How soon do the waitlists get cleared so that I will know whether or not we will be attending an event?

Contact your regional director. There is no set date for when they will add how many teams.

Re: Registration 2015

2607 teams - 100 shy of last year's total teams (2707).

No way it's coming in the 2016 season. 2017 seems like it could be doubtful too.

That's slightly depressing...
