Yes and no.

The link doesn't work directly unless you've established a session with the FIRST server. The session actually lasts forever after you've established it.
https://my.usfirst.org/myarea/index.lasso probably returns a blank screen for you.

I'm trying to find an easy (though odd) way that anyone can use.

That's why it doesn't fit that list.

I'll change the phrasing a little.

Here's one way that seems to work consistently.
  1. Go to the Regional & District Events webpage: http://www3.usfirst.org/roboticsprog...egional-events
  2. Leave the page alone for a good while to let the page session expire.
  3. Refresh the page and you should see it switch to the old style page.
  4. Optional, some browsers let you open just that part in it's own tab or window.

That's only the Michigan teams that opted into their home event, correct? Because you'd have no way to tell if a team registered but opted out?

I believe you are correct. Right now only the close-to-home opt-in teams seem to be listed.

Correlating with the 1st Event Registration – How Boring Was That? FRC Blog post, it appears that at midnight ~70 to 75 teams were waitlisted.
Some of these must have been due to MI teams opting out of the home event, but there were also 10 full events that were accumulating waitlists by that time.

I gotta say, nearly 24 hours after registration opened, FIRST really rocked it. No issues with getting registered so far. As someone who characterized HQ's web presence as something

I'm very pleased with how event registration went, but I'm still a tad skeptical about FIRST Choice....I'd hope HQ and AndyMark are planning on running a series of test runs before the madness ensues.

In the end 1st choice worked pretty well. I expect issues with it helped to make this years registration better. I don't think anybody wants a repeat of last years debacle. :]

In case anyone's still curious about this...

The query expressions appended to index.lasso only work if you have an active session with the server and if you send the http request with the appropriate headers. These headers should include both a cookie with your session ID, as well as the headers:
Code:

host: my.usfirst.org
referer: https://my.usfirst.org/myarea/index.lasso?event_type=FRC&year=2015

or some variation of these (I didn't rigorously test for what is required, I just mimicked the headers in Chrome's logs until it worked).

Then you can send a request to:
Code:

https://my.usfirst.org/myarea/index.lasso?page=event_details&eid=[Event ID]
with your Event ID. Or you can request any other data. A list of Event IDs that I scraped from the event listing can be found at:
https://netfiles.umn.edu/users/siekm...Cdata/eids.csv

I wrote a python script that scrapes all the event details and builds a table in html. For example, this was scraped at ~11:00am EST on Friday, 9/26:
https://netfiles.umn.edu/users/siekm...ata/table.html

If I can find access to a webserver, I could put up a page that updates this table a few times every hour. However, processing 100+ separate https requests takes nearly a minute, so it's obviously a better idea for usfirst.org to aggregate this data for us and make it available with a single request...

Re: Registration 2015

Yes, the event pages now require a Referer header that contains the string "usfirst.org", otherwise they show up blank.

FRCLinks gets around this by adding an intermediate redirect to another frclinks.com URL that happens to contain "usfirst.org".

If you're getting data programmatically instead of in the browser, it's pretty easy to get around this. E.g:
Code:

curl -H "Referer: usfirst.org" "https://my.usfirst.org/myarea/index.lasso?page=teamlist&event_type=FRC&sort_teams=number&year=2015&event=casj"

It appears even with the Referer header, the event_details page always reads eid as invalid, until a different page (such as another frclinks request or a request directly to my.usfirst.org) establishes a cookie. This cookie also needs to be supplied to the event_details page, while it's not needed for other requests.

It would also be nice if they allowed you to search by region/district. Being in a district with 6 states requires a lot of clicking to get information on our area for teams and events. If there is an easier way its not easy to find.

North Carolina just added in 10 teams from the waitlist.
Kevin noted awhile back that NC had added 8 more reserved slots the day before registration opened. Well, they have been assigned.

An hour later,
MN 10K Lakes added 23
MN North Star added 15

2000 teams just after noon today.

Followed by a smattering of minor waitlist changes at:
Los Angeles
Kansas City
Arizona East
Long Island
San Diego

plus
Dallas

So, being so early these must be local teams being brought into the fold.
It seems that the waitlist doesn't appear to include any Michigan non-home teams after all, as they are being drawn into Regional events.

NC should still have at least 13 reserved slots remaining to use up on any other wait-listed teams from the 1st event registration (15+8-10=13). Do not think there will be many reserved slots left in NC for the upcoming 2nd event registration.

EDIT: By the end of the day NC added in a total of 12 teams from the wait-list. NC should still have at least 11 reserved slots remaining (15+8-12=11).

Just to comment on this... 10,000 is at full capacity, based on previous year's numbers and the limitations of the venue for pit size. The wait list there is just people hoping someone drops out at this point!

That looks like it happened for one team already.
The 10K event total dropped to 62 on Oct 7 and came right back up to 63 the next day, so somebody got in.

Could anyone possibly explain why these were zero'd out? Is it just to help with site traffic?

By my count we are missing 44 teams that competed in 2014 in Michigan. 21 of those were rookies in 2014. I'd guess that they are reserving spots for younger teams and yet-to-register 2015 rookies, and they expect that those areas will have a higher concentration of young teams than the others.

Tangent - At this point in time MI teams make up approximately 11.53% of all FRC teams.

It comes of the season calendar for one place. It is for the second regional. 10/30 is for 3rd & more.

Maxed out FiM districts (30 is maxed out, event capacity is usually 40):

Howell
West Michigan
Center Line
Livonia
Kettering*
Traverse City*
Great Lakes Bay*

*These events have less than 30 teams

For TC specifically (IMO), I think it is because last year, basically all the teams were from northern Michigan or the UP, and zeroing it out now means that FiM can sort through later to make sure that those teams make it in before, say, someone from Detroit signs up and someone has to drive >9 hours for a district event.

FiM is holding spots for rookie home teams till they decide not to compete in their home event. Once the rookie teams sign up for two events in other locations, the spots will be open to non-home teams... this is my understanding.

Also coaches received an email stating that there will likely need to be another district event added for week two. So more teams are definitely in the works, even if they haven't gotten registered just yet.

Re: Registration 2015

I am surprised that the Pioneer Valley event in the New England District is so undersubscribed.

This is an outstanding venue in a cool small city.

Compared to events that are held in high schools, this venue is a great space that can handle many teams with aplomb.

I am hoping that more teams will choose this as their third district.
If not, MAR, FiM, and Indiana are welcome. (PNW, a long ride :yikes: )
A great travel "regional".
The airport (BDL) is close and there are many hotels right next to the venue.

Inter-districts, let's make this like the old days. Miscegenation rocks!

In all honesty I would guess no. There's only 10 and 11 spots left at Howell and Southfield, respectively. However there is always a chance.

Also since there's talk (per an earlier post) of adding another event Week 2, that could lead to some available spots that week if your scheduling allows for a trip to Michigan then.

I would recommend coming to a week 2 ;)

Side note: I have noticed that the listed capacity is down from what some of them ended up being last year, so they could always bump up the number of teams aloud in.

If this year follows last year and the year before at this particular date, then that'd extrapolate into a team total of 2860 for this year, but registration shows up a little differently this year because of the longer waitlists hiding teams a bit more than usual.
If overall growth is the same as last year, then that'd be about 2903 total teams for this year.

The daily registration tally is available at:
Open Registration Year-to-Year Comparison
It's only updated every once in a while for the current registration period.

Note that the dates in the chart have been normalized to bring registration schedule openings/closings differences over the years into alignment for comparison purposes.
The vertical markers represent the opening of registration for: 2nd District, 2nd Regional, Unrestricted Regional, Closing, and Kickoff.

Thank you again for organizing FRC data Mark, it serves as another reminder that Texas is being left behind in the FRC registration curves. I've discussed Texas registration in 2014 and i will jump into it again for Texas 2015.

Thank you.

Andrew Lawrence, I was aware that they were not registered (through http://www.usfirst.org/whats-going-o...rogramCode=FRC), I was curious to know who the other team was, as googling "Colombia FRC" got me only the Space Stars. (Sorry, I don't know how to quote multiple posts.)

For some reason, googling "FRC 5521" does get me to http://www.usfirst.org/whats-going-o...rogramCode=FRC, which seems inaccessible through any other means, as Colombia continues to be absent from the drop-down menu for countries in the search page. Is this the only way to reach this page?

PS My name is Elizabeth, not Violet. (I just like the color purple.)

Does ANYONE know why no one can sign up for a third district until December 11th? Actually District 3rd plays have a window of December 11th until December 30th. Given the fact that District teams have priority for extra slots over inter District teams... an inter District team might have to wait until after Christmas to know that they are going to be let in.

I don't understand why 3rd District Event registration is SIX WEEKS after open registration for regionals.(October 30)

Does anyone have any idea why this is? Was it this way last year too?

Just wondering

Perhaps they are waiting until after the payment deadline to make sure that no more rookie teams (or late registering veteran teams) pop up before they give those spots away? That's what I'd guess for FiM. The past two years they've ended up adding an event (or two) pretty late in the fall (or even not until build season started I think) so I'd guess that managing total available event spots and getting everybody assigned is rather time consuming, thus necessitating a much later time period for 3rd event registration. The waiting is kind of a bummer though.

In my experience it is announced almost too late to make other plans. You would be wise to have the coach for the team email Gail and find out where on the list you are. Any further down than three or four and it is best to look elsewhere. Otherwise you just have to wait and hope.

We definitely preferred knowing for a fact that we would drive a few hours further over simply hoping to get in to an event.

In regards to the FRC Blog post: Helping Rookie Teams

Here is a chart comparing rookie registration over the same period to date in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
Note some of the data is interpolated and that's the unnaturally straight parts.
The start day for each year was one day off of the year before, so that was normalized to a common start date (this year's).
2014 had an unusually high initial registration for rookies for some reason.
