Registration 2015

Time again for that wonderful pastime of watching the election results as folks click through TIMS voting for their most popular FRC events.

107 events - 11% growth (at least to start with)
56 Regionals (+2)
45 Districts (+8)
5 District Championships (+1)
1 World Championship (greatly enlarged)

Ladies and Gentlemen, exercise your clicking fingers...

P.S.
1st rookie team # is 5400

772 teams registered within the first 3 minutes (4.3 teams per second)
838 at 4 minutes (66 teams per minute-just for this time period)
887 at 5 minutes (49 teams per minute)
926 at 6 minutes (39 teams/min)
946 at 7 minutes (20 teams/min)
972 at 8 minutes (26 teams/min)
1007 at 10 minutes (17.5 teams/min)
1067 at 15 minutes (12 teams/min)
1109 at 20 minutes (8.4 teams/min)
1180 at 30 minutes (7.1 teams/min)
1300 at 60 minutes (4 teams/min)
1397 at 90 minutes (3.2 teams/min)
1443 at 2 hours (1.5 teams/min)
1482 at 2.5 hours (1.3 teams/min)
1513 at 3 hours (1 team/min)

1604 at 5 hours (41 teams/hr)
1700 at 9 hours 42 minutes (20 teams/hr)
1794 at 24 hours (6.5 teams/hr)

1796 at 12 hours (includes ~ 75 waitlisted teams (mostly MI I imagine), from the FRC Blog, which are not visible in the numbers above) translates to an overall ~149 teams /hr

It must be so slow because people are actually reading the legal pages...

P.S. 1st Rookie number is 5400

24 hours to edit this post have expired so no more updates to these here numbers.

This was the easiest and fastest this has ever gone. Registered for Long Beach at 12:00:15 EDT, and that was taking 5 seconds to skim what I was clicking.

But OMG! By 12:00:50 EDT, there were 25 teams registered! 25 teams in 50 seconds! This is getting ridiculously competitive. By 12:03:00, 30 teams.

All I can say is in future years, you better have a fast computer, on a fast network, and a really precise mouse. And forget trying to read anything on the screen.

Oh, and you better cancel everything and take off work that morning, and if you're a teacher, cancel class.

All you web ninjas out there, does anyone want to whip up a quick reference page that pulls in the following data in a pretty table:

1. Regional Name {And link to registered teams}
2. Regional Location
3. Regional Dates
4. Number of Registered Teams
5. Number of Spots Available

FIRST used to have a page like this that made for a great quick reference for those of us who like to follow registration season. It hasn't been around for a while, but it seems like this would be easy enough to create by someone who has a little bit of time.

Well the Southern Indiana teams really have no other choice and most of the Indy area teams like the idea of not traveling. The event will be in the Indianapolis area one way or another.

It's a combination of travel distance and event timing. With only Week 1, 3, and 4 events, if you want any break between tournament weekends, you have to pick week 1. Also, the week 3 and 4 events are both an hour+ north of indy, so it really is the closest event for teams in the city and the southern half of the state.

In future years we need to do something different - like a registration period and a lottery system:
Teams indicate a 1st and 2nd choice within the registration period (say a week).
70% of spaces go in the first round - first choice by lottery.
Those that didn't get their first choice go into a lottery for their 2nd choice (the next 20% of spaces).
Should a team not get their first or 2nd choice, they get to register for the last few open spaces in what is presumably their 3rd choice.
Wash, rinse repeat for 2nd regional registration.

Hey, it could work...

- Mr. Van
Coach, Robodox

PS - Registration was indeed really smooth, but I'm glad that I didn't have class today!

Yep, both 10K and North Star are filled up. It really is a shame, but there are always a handful of Twin City area teams that can't get in to the Minneapolis events, and then have to travel to Duluth, Milwaukee, or Chicago instead.

Remember that right now registration is capped at around 30 teams for each. Last year there were 60 teams at each (well, 63 at 10K Lakes). If a Twin Cities team wants to be at North Star/10K Lakes, they still have a pretty good shot at being there.

Edit: Well, Evan beat me to it :)

I've created a Google Docs with this information. I'll edit it as teams register but if someone knows how to set up a spreadsheet that pulls the data automatically, go for it because I'm unsure how to do it. Remember, I'm updating this manually so before you register for an event, check USFIRST.org to make sure you have the most updated slot count. This is meant to just be a reference page.

I am aware of this, but some teams still manage to slip through the cracks. I trust the Planning Committee to do their best to accommodate as many teams as they can, but the fact is that there are just more teams that want to get in than slots available.

You can use an frclinks.com short URL of the form frclinks.com/e/[eventcode] to easily access the registered team list for each event.

Cool, I'll throw those up in a bit.

There are teams that just shoot themselves in the foot, you mean. For example, 2169 registered for Northern Lights today... that gives them a very low chance of getting into one of the Minneapolis events for second event registration, as Minneapolis fills (final capacity) before Duluth! If a veteran team from the cities waits until second event registration to register for the local regional, all bets are off.

My contacts say that several teams did try to get in to 10k Lakes also. If my information is correct, there are likely 4 rookie Chinese teams on the wait list at 10k Lakes and another rookie on the wait list at North Star. However, the other rookie team that I was told would try to register at North Star is showing up on the team list at New York City.

The goal was to have the Chinese teams join the four US based teams that were at the scrimmage in Shenzhen in August. So, there are 4 teams at the Las Vegas Regional with 987, 5 teams currently showing at the New York City Regional with 694, one team planning on a Canadian Regional, and one team that is still making plans. They checked into having some teams join 1595, but since they are in the PNW district, that did not work out.

I don't disagree that some teams can "shoot themselves in the foot", but there are still many teams that just can't get into the Minneapolis regional. For 2014, I count seven metro area (within ~1 hour of Minneapolis) rookie/second year teams that attended a Duluth event instead of a Minneapolis event:
4511
4663
4693
5278
5290
5299
5340
I doubt that very many of them just really wanted to get out of the cities. Additionally, I'm sure that there are nearby veteran teams that try to get in but just can't.

Edit: trouble counting

Some teams (like 4215) are forbidden by their schools from attending regionals over Easter weekend so Duluth is our closest option. As for second regionals, probably Milwaukee would be the next closest

All you web ninjas out there, does anyone want to whip up a quick reference page that pulls in the following data in a pretty table:

1. Regional Name {And link to registered teams}

This looks like it would be an easy addition to the existing frclinks interface. Right now you can enter queries to frclinks that are shortcuts to certain pages on usfirst.org. For example (see URLs below), entering 1 will redirect to 2, which redirects to 3. Or you can enter 2, which redirects to 3. 3 is the team list for MNDU2 (Northern Lights Regional).

Code:

1. http://frclinks.frclinks.com/e/mndu2

2. http://frclinks.frclinks.com/usfirst.org?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmy.usfirst.org%2Fmyarea%2Findex.lasso%3Fpage%3Dteamlist%26event_type%3DFRC%26sort_teams%3Dnumber%26year%3D2015%26event%3Dmndu2

3. https://my.usfirst.org/myarea/index.lasso?page=teamlist&event_type=FRC&sort_teams=number&year=2015&event=mndu2

For some reason, loading 3 directly always returns a blank page (literally a single newline). This has something to do with usfirst.org manages its sessions, but the frclinks redirect somehow takes care of this.

So we should be able to put any valid usfirst.org/.../index.lasso query in the url field of frclinks above. Right now frclinks has the shortcuts for team lists (/e/), awards (/e/a/), schedules (/e/s/), rankings (/e/r/), etc. but not for the details page (not sure why).

EDIT: So apparently what I did the first time worked because of the session I already had active... I still don't fully understand how usfirst.org sends data, but it appears that what I posted doesn't work. The event details query does not respond to event code, but rather to event id (eid) which I had to scrape from the event listing HTML. Also, you have to have an active session before making the request, or it says the event id is invalid. Anyone have a better idea how this all works?

But we can get this ourselves by using the stub

Code:

http://frclinks.frclinks.com/usfirst.org?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmy.usfirst.org%2Fmyarea%2Findex.lasso%3Fpage%3Devent_details%26event%3D
and putting our desired event code at the end (for example MNDU2) which will give the event details page for that event (including working links to the team list, awards, etc. pages).

So if you're curious about a particular events capacity, you can run that single http request instead of navigating through usfirst.org. Perhaps frclinks can add this as a shortcut option (such as /e/d/).

Perhaps I will build a site that queries all events and shows all the capacities in one table.

Forgive my ignorance on this, but how are you pulling all this data?
Do you have the ability to see who the very first team to register was?

There is one District event in each of the district systems, except for Indiana, that has only a single team registered so far.
  • FiM Lansing
  • MAR North Brunswick
  • NE UMass-Dartmouth
  • PNW Philomath Peak
For total teams I'm just using the old team list page that gives the total teams assigned to an event, rather than the newer page that lists all the team hopefuls.
