2015 MAR Season

I made a spreadsheet showing what District/Regional events MAR teams are attending. I'll try to update it regularly.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AizgHBYEeVnwdFVDSDcyRlJ3M1FNa050YWk3bjlrN 3c&usp=sharing

I'll probably make the district standings spreadsheet again like I did last year unless MAR uses the website that PNW used last year to automatically keep track of district points. Does anybody have any information on that?

Anyway, in the first hour of registration we already have 69 MAR teams signed up, including 8 new teams.
Team 2095 appears to be a spinoff of 2234.

Re: 2015 MAR Season

Is 265 coming back this year? Considering 223 has already registered and no sign of 265, I would assume not.

Also, Mt. Olive has already hit its initial capacity at 31 teams.

265 is more than likely not continuing this year

Over the past year, Team 316 has been working with Cumberland County College and the local high schools to launch a new FRC team in Bridgeton. I'm really excited to see Team #5420 Velocity starting in my hometown, and the opportunities it will bring to our students. Velocity will operate under our parent organization South Jersey Robotics, Inc., but is otherwise reaching a new group of students/mentors.

This is fantastic news! South Jersey has so many schools without FIRST in them. How did you manage to secure funding for the new team? That seems to be sort of an issue down there.

Thanks for this, Antonio. I was wondering this morning if you guys would publish one of these again this year, and you pulled through yet again. I always appreciate the hard work you (and Scott Meredith) have done keeping track of all the MAR data, and I'm sure many others in the region feel the same.

Given the current economy in the area, funding can definitely be an issue. I've been away at college for a month now, so my information may be a bit out of date, but here's what I do know. Cumberland County College is partnering with the city of Bridgeton to place a satellite campus/makerspace downtown (see this press release). The college will be giving the team a workshop at this location, access to the equipment, and some additional funding. South Jersey Robotics will also be assisting with the initial costs, and we'll apply our existing business model and fundraisers to the new team. I believe there was discussion of applying for the Rookie and/or NASA grants, as well as some local grant money.

Sounds like a solid plan teaming up with the local college! Let me know if you need any help or advice with any rookie-oriented fundraisers or want to try to hit up some of the local establishments for donations. Best of luck!

Re: 2015 MAR Season

It's been about 12 hours after registration has opened and we're already at 95 teams signed up, (MAR had 110 in total last year). With 8 new teams we've beat last year's growth.

It looks like rookie team 5435, from Hamilton, NJ, is home schooled; does anybody have any information about them? Is there a history of FRC teams that are home schooled?

The last one I recall from 2009-2010 is 2753, Team Overdrive.

I'm curious as to why this team wasn't able to figure out how to work with the local FRC teams in the Hamilton area, or if anyone even let them know how many teams were near them.

Well, one of the reasons MAR chose Lehigh to host the DCMP was to promote team growth in the region. Looks like it's finally working.

Also, I'm a big fan of 5435's team name, the 'RoboMomoTrufflez'

It certainly surprised me when I saw a new Hamilton team registered. They haven't reached out to us at least, as far as I know.

Re: 2015 MAR Season

Second district registration opens in an half an hour, so here's the numbers from first event registration.

HH 31
MO 31
SCH 13
LEN 16
BR 9
UD 5
NB 2

Total 107

We had 110 teams signed up at the end of last year, so we're already pretty close. 12 teams from last year have not registered again this year, although I suspect that a few of them are on wait-lists for Mount Olive or Hatboro-Horsham.

It seems like this year MAR wants all events to have about the same number of teams (+/-4 teams). Last year's smallest event (that's still continuing this year) was SCH with 34 teams. If that event doesn't get bigger then we should expect the other events to be capped at 38 teams. Last year Hatboro-Horsham (40), Lenape-Seneca (39) and Bridgewater-Raritan (46) all had over this amount.

To achieve this balance in attendance, any team that attempts to register for a MAR event that has reached its initial capacity of 31 teams will be placed on the waitlist for that event. We will not begin admitting teams from waitlists until all events have filled to minimum capacity, and we reserve the right 1) to limit the number of waitlisted teams for any event, and 2) to achieve these limits, if necessary, by dropping teams from event waitlists (in reverse order of sign-up).

If MAR ends up with 110 teams like last year the average event size, assuming everyone plays two districts, would be 32 teams. If we add in growth, third plays and teams from other district regions then the event size grows a little bit. I'd expect event sizes to be smaller this year than last year. It'll probably end up around 34 or 35 teams/event.

AGPapa 10-10-2014 12:12

Re: 2015 MAR Season

So far 82 MAR teams have registered for two events, while 26 have only registered for one.

The breakdown by event is:

HH 31
MO 31
SCH 30
LEN 27
BR 31
UD 30
NB 10

Bridgewater-Raritan has no more open spots, while Lenape-Seneca, Springside-Chesnut Hill and Upper Darby are all close to capacity.

Very few teams have signed up for North Brunswick. I'm not sure why, but I'm guessing that teams want to avoid week 6. Brunswick will have to fill up before they allow more teams into the other events.

Could it have to do with Easter weekend? Also, it seems that some teams have been pushed into a situation of doing Bridgewater and NB, which, if they were to qualify for MAR CMP, would be 3 back to back events

Edit: SCH is now full as well

We are debating using it for a 3rd event, pending funding and event capacity. Easter is a detractor too, but not necessarily a deal-breaker.

So now Upper Darby is full as well.

There are 22 initial spots left between Seneca and North Brunswick, and coincidentally, 23 teams that have so far only registered for one district

Re: 2015 MAR Season

As of right now, we have 9 new rookies in MAR for the 2015 Season, but 10 teams from last year that have not yet registered for any districts for next year. Has anyone heard any word from these teams about registration?

The missing teams are:
  • 1257 from Scotch Plains, NJ
  • 4285 from Honesdale, PA
  • 4460 from West Vincent, PA
  • 4650 from Newark, NJ
  • 423 from Wyncote, PA
  • 2070 from Ridgefield, NJ
  • 265 from Wanaque, NJ
  • 752 from Newark, NJ
  • 4128 from Holmdel, NJ
  • 136 from Plainfield, NJ

I know that 265 (which was 223's "beta" team last year) will not be returning for the 2015 season, and I thought I saw someone from 1257 posting on Chief Delphi a few days ago sounding like they would be participating.

I know of a handful of teams that are looking to attend North Brunswick as a third play (us included). Although it is a Thursday-Saturday event, most schools do have that Friday off due to the holiday.

A new rookie team, 5624, from South Plainfield NJ has registered for the North Brunswick Event. We now have 10 new teams this year. Eight teams that participated last year are not currently signed up for a district. Twenty-one teams have only signed up for one district,; I suspect that many of those teams are on waitlists at other events. So far 112 teams have signed up (compared to 110 last year).

North Brunswick is still significantly less full than other events with only 18 teams. The next lowest is Lenape with 29. All others have 31, except for Upper Darby with 32. I'm not sure why MAR let this extra team into UD before NB filled up.

Seneca is now at capacity with 31 teams. 13 spots left in North Brunswick before waitlists open up

Currently there are 4 MAR teams signed up for the South Florida regional: 87, 2016, 2234 and 3314.
I don't see any more MAR teams registered for regionals, but I'm sure that some teams are on waitlists.

Team 2234 and their sister team 2095 switched out of Hatboro and into North Brunswick, so now there are 30 teams at HH and 24 at NB.

Changes thus far today:

Hatboro-Horsham down to 30 from 32.
Seneca down to 30 from 31.
North Brunswick up to 25 from 18.

4 Teams Registered for regionals (87, 1676, 2016, 2234)
At least one team wait listed for a regional (1923 - NYC)

AGPapa 04-11-2014 16:49

Re: 2015 MAR Season

11 has gotten off of the waitlist at South Florida; there are now 4 MAR teams at that regional.

Another rookie, 5684, has registered; there are 13 new teams this year. 11.11% of all current MAR teams are from 2015, more than any other year (the next highest is 1999 with 9.40% of all MAR teams).

With 117 teams MAR has ~4% of all currently registered teams. If this stays constant we should get 24 or 25 spots at the Championship. (With all of the waitlist and reverse-wildcard madness last year MAR sent 23 teams).

Why doesn't any team in MAR register for 3 district events, is it not worth? I know that only the first two count, but the third is cheap and prepares your team for MAR championship if they are going, or just a fun last event for your team. Team 33, did 3 last years and, team 125 even did 4. Can anyone enlighten me on the downfalls of doing a third.

3rd district event registration doesn't open until 12/9.

Last year MAR had 10 teams register for a 3rd district event (41, 193, 223, 303, 1279, 1676, 2180, 3314, 4637, 4653). We had 11 teams attend outside regional events (11, 56, 204, 225, 303, 341, 555, 1218, 2016, 2234, 2607).

We have 8 teams (so far) attending outside regional events this year (11, 87, 103, 341, 1676, 2016, 2234, 2590).

It all depends on the # of open slots that remain after teams register for their 2 events. It's likely that North Brunswick will have >5 slots available, past that it depends on some combination of FIRST, the MAR board, and the venue. If we're going based on history, it looks like Hatboro, Lenape, and Bridgewater have the ability to support additional teams. No idea about Upper Darby since it's new this year.

If we're going based on history, it looks like Hatboro, Lenape, and Bridgewater have the ability to support additional teams. No idea about Upper Darby since it's new this year.

Thank you for clarifying this for me, I didn't know this fact before. Next time I will make sure to check my facts before posting, sorry.

Re: 2015 MAR Season

That being said, it seems all registered MAR teams are now registered for two events. Three veterans did not register for any events (265, 4128, 4650).

Also, team 11 is now registered for the Hawaii regional, bringing the total regional slots up to 9 (11 (2), 87, 103, 341, 1676, 2016, 2234, 2590)

This number may increase as more teams get off the waitlists

Re: 2015 MAR Season

Props to the MAR board for doing a much better job load-balancing district events this year. No idea about capacity for NB, but looks like there should be a handful of slots there for teams looking to do a 3rd district event (6-8 slots possibly?). That would give us an average of 36 teams/event, with MO and BR +2 and SCH and UD -2. Pretty ideal.

Numbers on 3rd registration eve:

HH 36
MO 38
SCH 34
LEN 36
BR 38
UD 34
NB 28

Team 33, did 3 last years and, team 125 even did 4. Can anyone enlighten me on the downfalls of doing a third.

1. Money
2. Time
3. Burnout - mentors especially
4. Need to catch up on sleep, homework, etc.
5. Travel - not all events - most for some teams - are within good commuting distance
6. Money - it's not just the registration fee, but travel costs, food, etc.

So far two teams have signed up for a 3rd District at North Brunswick, 193 and 2180.

EDIT: 714 is registered for the South Florida Regional

  • Team 303 is now registered for the Tech Valley Regional
  • Team 11 is no longer registered for South Florida or North Brunswick

So the number of regional slots taken is still at eleven.

Interesting, 11 is now the only MAR team registered for just one district, which is their own.

From what I've heard, the school district changed the dates that they were doing state testing, and it messed with 11's travel plans. I believe they are aiming to do Hatboro-Horsham, Mount Olive, and Hawaii now if space allows.

Really hope I can make it down there this year. Looks like it's going to be one heck of an event (as usual).

Also, I believe that 11 is tentatively planning to attend a Week 3 NE event as well

I saw in the Week 0 thread that 303 was tentatively planning to host one on their practice field, though I don't know any of the details. I would imagine that 41 will host one again this year, they've been doing it for a while now.

Also, 3 more teams have registered for North Brunswick as a third event:

Re: 2015 MAR Season

According to MORT's facebook page they're going to the Pine Tree District in New England for week 3.

Currently there are twelve teams signed up for three MAR districts (There were 10 last year). Ten of those teams will be going to North Brunswick for their third event.

Additionally, we lost a rookie. The homeschool team (5435) from Hamilton, NJ has dropped out of both of their districts.

It seems like CD moved us from a MAR specific subforum to a District event subforum. This thread wasn't showing up in my portal so I was missing it for a few weeks.

That's A LOT of teams leaving the district

Congratulations to 2016 on their EI win in South Florida. That means the first points slot at MAR Champs will be consumed, unless they qualify again through MAR.

In light of the issues with reporting Week 1 event data, I created a rankings spreadsheet with the event data from Horsham and an overall rankings display for Week 1. While the rankings should be roughly accurate, I did the math for determining qualification ranking points by hand so take the exact numbers with a grain of salt (or if somebody else has more exact numbers, let me know)

Link to Rankings

EDIT: Updated with more accurate point values (Thanks Antonio). It seems like the official event data is already starting to come in anyway.

Most of the teams competing at regionals are done, with only 341 (Vegas), 11 (Hawaii) and 4575 (Queen City) still having to compete. Currently 2016 (South Florida EI), 1923 (Tech Valley EI) and 2590 (Montreal Winner) have claimed spots in St.Louis, but I expect one of 11, 341 and 4575 to qualify in the next two weeks.

In other news, I absolutely love the new ranking website. It's so easy to use and having up to date numbers without all of the work I did last year is great.

A few additional MAR teams have registered for the championship via the wait list, those being teams 41, 203, and 223.

According to this blog post MAR will be sending 25 teams plus the pre-qualified teams and waitlist teams.

Does this mean that, in addition to the 8 slots taken up by the Winning Alliance, Chairmans*2, EI*2, and RAS, there will be 17 points slots (up from last year's 10)?

Well then here's the teams that are a mathematical lock for Lehigh. Everybody above 66 points is a lock.

Code:

225 - TechFire
2607 - The Fighting RoboVikings
1403 - Cougar Robotics
1640 - Sab-BOT-age
1676 - The Pascack PI-oneers
56 - R.O.B.B.E.
1647 - Iron Devils
1218 - Vulcan Robotics
219 - Team Impact
2016 - Mighty Monkey Wrenches
272 - Cyber-Crusaders
11 - MORT
75 - RoboRaiders
203 - One TUFF Team (Team United for...
316 - LuNaTeCs
365 - Miracle Workerz
1143 - Cruzin' Comets
5407 - Wolfpack Robotics
293 - Team S.P.I.K.E.
3974 - E=mCD
1228 - RoboTribe
1712 - Dawgma
321 - RoboLancers
25 - Raider Robotix
1811 - FRESH
222 - Tigertrons
2559 - Normality Zero
3142 - Aperture
2590 - Nemesis
2191 - Flux Core
1089 - Team Mercury
869 - Power Cord 869
87 - Red Devils

Only the 25 teams at NB are completing for points, so the top 33 (those teams) are in. That assumes that all CA teams are above the cutoff, which probably isn't true this year.

Interestingly enough, the points based approach I used in past years gives the exact same set of teams.

I expect the cutoff to be around 55-57 points.

I ran the numbers for the teams definitely qualified and definitely not qualified. The threshold will lie between 53 and 70 points, though much higher than 60 is very unlikely.
I've attached my analysis spreadsheet.

Re: 2015 MAR Season

Just got an email from MAR. I've attached the bits relative to the rankings and attendence:

Quote:

The roster will include the seven winners of the MAR District Chairman’s Award (DCA) as well as the 48 other teams that have earned the greatest number of ranking points as published on the MAR District Ranking page of the FRC District Ranking System Leaderboard.. As of Week 5, all but twenty-six MAR teams have completed two District events. Using the method described below, MAR has determined that teams ranked in positions 1 to 32 inclusive have clinched their eligibility for the championship event. The eligibility for remaining teams (other than previously notified DCA winners) is dependent on the outcome of the Week 6 North Brunswick event and cannot be determined at this time

The method used to determine which teams have clinched eligibility is an iterative process that tests whether the points earned by a team that has completed its season may be exceeded by teams that will earn points in the week 6 event. In descending order, each team’s present ranking is decremented by the number of teams who might earn higher point totals to create a worst-case final ranking. Teams whose worst-case final ranking remains within the 55-team eligibility limit (taking into account the automatic eligibility extended to DCA-winning teams) are determined to have clinched their eligibility. The result is an absolute determination, not a prediction.

As it now stands, the top 32 teams are:

Code:

Here's a question: If 4575 qualifies for World Championships at the Queen City Regional this weekend, would that take away a MAR points slot for STL? Or not since they have already gotten into STL via the waitlist?

Here's the relevant portion of the manual.

From my reading of it, the waitlist spot doesn't matter. If 4575 earns a spot at a Regional then MAR looses a point slot. This makes a little bit of (twisted) sense, as if worked otherwise then 4575's waitlist spot would essentially be transferred to another team.

If this is true, MAR is now down to 13 point slots for World Champs (due to 2016 winning EI at South Florida, 2590 winning Montreal, 1923 winning EI at Tech Valley, and 4575 winning Queen City).

We were invited off the waitlist but declined - we figured if we won our way in then we'd go but if we didn't earn the points to go from Lehigh, it didn't make sense to spend the money.

Odd though, we declined that waitlist invite several weeks ago.

Re: 2015 MAR Season

1089's and 1923's alliances both lost in the Semifinals on Einstein, but they both did a great job representing MAR on the big stage! Amazing job to them and everyone else this season; onto the next!
