2015 MRI

As MRI is just around the corner, I was wondering who is in this year? FireBears do you have a list that you could post?

Thanks!

2052 Knightkrawler will be in attendance as well. We may even be entering a second robot that we've been working on as a summer project :)

4536 will be coming to MRI 2014. I hope that we will be coming to MRI 2015 as well, but I think that a thread about it now might be a little premature. ;)

I think it already passed. Check their site or email the team to make sure though.

I heard the event was completely full, with 30 teams and possibly even a wait list! It should be a good time! 2177 will, of course, be there!

Re: 2015 MRI

Well, we are attending - but we are in a bit of a pickle. Our robot is severely damaged and not certain if we can get it up and running on time.

We used our robot in our Becker Freedom Days parade and set our tension (speargun tubing) as high as we ever had it to fire off Tee Shirts, candy, etc. We ended up destroying the catapult and in the process may have damaged some of our electrical components.

Since we graduated most of our shop detail and much of our leadership from the last two years, it will be a struggle to get this up and going. Time for the newbies to step up I guess!

I hope your robot gets up and running before then. It was one of my favorite MN robots from last year.

Best of luck to you guys!

Bring it, even if it's broken. We'll get it fixed one way or another, and it'll give your new students a taste of what it really means to be in FIRST! If you identify any control system components that need to be replaced ahead of time, let me know and I'll find replacements for you. We probably have them sitting around our shop collecting dust anyways :)

3883 is in a similar pickle. I have no idea what the specifics are, but I do know our catapult is faulty right now. I really hope you guys get your robot up and running, it was great competining both with and against you. :D

Please let us know if it is still not working correctly on the 11th! We have lots of extra parts and would love to help get your robot up and running again! We actually damaged our robot severely during our regional competition (bent the catapult shaft) so I know it can be stressful, but try not to worry too much. I'm confident you will have a working robot to compete with.

CyBears 4859 from Byron will be there, but as of Saturday, there are major issues with the control system. We are looking to borrow replacement cRio, modules, and/or DSC prior to arriving to see if the problem can be resolved. The DSC status light flickers wildly when we enable and motors generally don't turn when commanded to do so... but sometimes they do..

silverD 06-10-2014 11:23

Re: 2015 MRI

Sorry to hear your team is having troubles. Was there an incident that caused these issues or did they just show up? I'm sure you have checked already, but here are some suggestions:
Make sure the 3 lights on the PDB are green as well as the 3 lights on the DSC. Make sure the cRio is isolated from the chassis and that the ribbon cable to the sidecar is not damaged and seated properly. Verify that the modules are seated in the correct cRio slots and that there are no bent pins. Try systematically unhooking components until normal operation occurs.
The next step would be to swap out components. Please PM me in regards to this.
Nate

Man, with all these teams with problems, I'm gonna have a busy day at MRI!

For all teams - if you know you have problems and need help fixing them, please find me! I'll be the guy with the yellow hat and black vest... basically, wearing the same getup that I've had on every other time you've seen me the past few years :p Even if you're getting another team to help and don't specifically need my help, let me know - I'll help coordinate things with the field so you don't have people from queueing over there bugging you every 10 minutes!

Any progress? Is this wireless or tethered? If wireless, it could be a communication issue with the radio/driver station.

Re: 2015 MRI

I checked your website, but there doesn't appear to be a list of attending teams. Echoing the OP, does anyone happen to have a list?

I have:

4607
4778
2052
2175 (and practice bot possibly)
3883
2177 (?)
2531 (?)
2220 (not in this thread, but I know they'll be there)
and of course Firebears.

A question mark just means I'm assuming based on the thread you'll be there, even if it hasn't been explicitly stated.

Anyone else?

A new DSC and ribbon cable is scheduled to arrive Thursday. I think we can borrow a bench setup to help diagnose from 2530, and it has been tethered throughout. There were two DSCs, and one's board has what looks like a fried FET (I'm no expert here, but there was a brown spot and someone more informed than I said it was a FET.

Does anyone know how to dump any cRio internal logging files ? Where are they?

I've also seen a 4-slot cRio freeze up because it ran out of logging space and needed some type of hard reset (we've re-imaged it, not helping)

I'm not sure which logs you are looking for (or where they would be), but you can FTP into your cRIO at ftp://10.XX.YY.2, or use netconsole at the same address to access the console.

I don't have a cRIO handy, but if you open up either of those and there's a /var/log directory, I would start there.

Got a new DSC, RSL is better looking now, but still no motor movement. I could not find any useful logs on the cRio when I FTP'd to it.

Working on it right now....

Partial success ! Current best guess is that we have three bad victor 888's (out of 8).

silverD 10-10-2014 10:27

Re: 2015 MRI

Progress, nice :) Try swapping the PWMs for the victors before removing them. Since you have a new DSC, we need to track it down to the PWM cable, victor, wiring, or motor. Keep swapping out pieces of the puzzle. Don't toss out the victors that you swap out quite yet. Most of the time when you are swapping motor controllers you are under a time crunch (prepping for or at a competition). Hang on to and test the controllers when you have adequate time to fully test and possibly fix them (for off-season use only) ;)
It's surprising how many speed controllers over the years I have found to be operational that were initially deemed "bad".

How is everyone coming along in getting their bots up and running?

2052 has never actually built a practice robot before. This is a completely new robot that we built as a summer project. Since we generally do mecanum we decided to do a 6 CIM shifting WCD robot for the summer project to get some experience with that. We did use our spare pickup arm though so our method of ball pickup is the same as our competition bot. We are entering it as a separate robot so yes, it will be in matches.

Yes, we did try swapping around pwm cables and ports and determined that the PWM was most likely bad. It was reading 0 volts on the output side as well, and blinking instead of solid.

I think we are getting some borrowed Victors today, but I won't be able to be present tonight.

feverittm 10-10-2014 14:40

Re: 2015 MRI

Do you have a spare servo that you could connect to the suspect PWM? (after adding the required sidecar 6V jumper of course)

This could help you determine if the PWM is sending out the correct data and identify the victor as an issue.

If you swapped PWMs with another victor on your board already, then this should have determined this already.

Just my $0.02.

Enjoy!

Thank You Firebears for such a great event. You were great hosts at a great venue!

I love how Aerial Assist shapes up over the course of the qualification rounds and then really comes to life during eliminations! You can feel the excitement build as the competitors play the quals and really feel out the competition and then come into the elims like prize fighters as the alliances battle every second of the matches.

Thank you 1816 for choosing us, it was the first time we were able to play alongside you in an elim situation and my kids were excited to play with you, 2052, and 2472.

3883 played the elims like a beast. I would hate to be on the receiving end of their charges - awesome drive train!

I loved the fact that the 5 remaining teams from the MSHSL State Tourney all made it into the elims - you could feel the energy in the air during each of the rounds.

This was 4607's first off-season event and we were bit by the bug. Hopefully we are able to make it to Minne-Mini (I registered our team as we were driving back to Becker).

HELP! I just realized that we left our gamepiece at MRI:yikes: ! It is pretty unmistakable - it is blue and has our CIS 4607 logo plastered on it. If you grabbed it, please PM me and I will figure out how to get it back.

Thanks!

Good luck!!! I'm sure someone already has it.

All in all, MRI was crazy in a good way, especially that final match. Awesome. I'd like to congratulate the two scolarship winners on 2175 and all teams for attending and participating! Also, sorry our lead scout walked off the field. She was too nervous to focus on the fact that you stay on the field.

I wanted to ask, how many teams switched out drive teams for matches, and how did that go? I know when I was Human Player it was slightly chaotic and I have a newfound respect for human players now. (I also noticed about 3/4 through matches a team was looking for their drive team... Hopefully they were found in time)

Does anybody know if MRI was recorded and if so where the videos can be found?

4536 planned to have 4 new drivers, but none of them showed up, so we used last year's drivers for all but one of our matches. We did switch up our HP almost every match though.

Re: 2015 MRI

2220 was running an 3/4 new drive team. Last year's driver was coaching and the three new members were switching places throughout the day.

Re: 2015 MRI

4778 rotated rookie drivers for the majority of qualifications and a rookie human player through quals & elims. Good way for new members to feel involved straight away!

Re: 2015 MRI

We had all new drivers and human players, and 4 of our coaches we rotated were new.

I recorded a few of the final matches 3883 was in but it was mainly focused on our bot. I could ask my mentor for them (they were on his fancy camera) if you're still interested.

We graduated our entire drive team last year. The 4 we had on the drive team at MRI never had been in the station before.

I suggested to Tom that for next year, it would be easy to rig up a wide angle video camera (e.g. GoPro) with power and signal cable. Suspend it from the divider curtain which was positioned directly over mid-field--- running cables over to the balcony. The curtain could be lifted to a height that results in the camera just capturing the field and driver stations. Somebody with equipment and who lives geographically closer than me could volunteer to make that happen next year on Friday before the tournament !?

Also would be nice to get a GoPro on a stick at the regionals... This is Minnesota, we like everything on a stick (deep frying it might be a bad idea though)!

We have been upgrading all of our webcasting stuff for at least North Star this coming year which includes an HD wide angle camera mounted on a stick.

And possibly some custom overlays

At a few events where 2175 ran the webcast, we have run either a GoPro or a cheaper wide angle web cam off the side of the side of the field. This only requires a ~10ft pole for the camera (plus cables), and can be set up at any field, regardless of venue (even outside...).

2014 Gitchi Gummi Get Together

We're working on all the different aspects of this setup, including pole construction and positioning and the software package to capture the feed(s), run the stream, and archive and upload matches. With more testing this off-season, hopefully it's something that can be rolled out at more and more events at very low cost (<$100).

Great shot as our robot "Gumdrop" launched our own game piece https://www.facebook.com/BeckerRobot...type=1&theater...
