No word back yet but I may have to wait until after auditions :(
Good luck to everyone else out there applying!!

SUNY Potsdam is a fantastic school for music ed, and there is a ton of FIRST in the community as well, just down the road at Clarkson. Lots of volunteering opportunities should you so desire to stay involved. It's the middle of nowhere, that's very true - but just wanted to drop you a note not to worry about being away from FIRST if you don't want to be.

To those with Clarkson on the list - happy to answer any questions about the university or FIRST involvement there, including the scholarship program and FIRST-alumni housing.

Assuming I get accepted, you can probably expect a message from me in the future.

Hi Cory! Im a 2014 Deans List finalist from Holland Michigan team 141, and I recently was accepted by WPI , I've never been to WPI ,but at Worlds this last year, I met with a rep and I really appreciated what WPI had to offer. I wondered if you could please give me me a perspective on what the robotics labs are like and how easy it is to find co-op opportunities through WPI. I'm interested in majoring in bio-medical engineering. Thank You!

The robotics labs are awesome. The labs for undergraduate classes are open 24/7 and have all of the parts and tools you will need. Usually a TA is around for help too. The projects themselves are in groups, are very intense and have a tight deadline. Every project I have done so far has had a direct application that I have used in my previous internship.

WPI has several research robotics labs. I am a member of the DRC lab (DARPA's/Boston Dynamic's Atlas robot). We have several undergrads that are contributing directly to the project. One of the sophomores already has had his work on Atlas published! Check out the website for more detail:
http://robot.wpi.edu/drc/

Co-ops and internships are easy to find. The career fair is huge for the size of our school. The CDC is extremely helpful during the whole process, from making a resume to comparing offers from companies.

As for bio-medical engineering, you should check out the Life Sciences and Bioengineering center at Gateway Park. We recently recieved a couple of grants from the NSF for robots in the fight against Ebola.

As a current Lake State student, I can personally attest to how good LSSU's engineering and robotics program is. The university's small size allows you to truly get to know the faculty, and they're all super cool people and really willing to help when you need it.

I recently went to the AUTOMATE industrial robotics conference in Chicago to represent LSSU, and I was shocked at how many employees of big robotics companies recognized us and/or admitting to being an alumni! Companies like Staubli, Fanuc, Kuka, Universal Robotics, ABB, Comau, etc. There were Lakers everywhere! :ahh: Even while we're here as students, we get emailed dozens of job opportunities and internships every year because these companies are seeking us out for the experience we get in our academic program...

Anyway, if you have any questions about Lake State, I'm certainly willing to answer. :)

Magical things happen when you have tons of free time.
Seriously.
I took a gap year because I wanted to go to Olin and was wait-listed, so I had no plan at all going in. I was pretty sure I was going to spend the whole thing watching netflix.
I somehow managed to get an engineering internship at a local firm last summer designing, building , and programming a machine to measure break-pads autonomously and non destructively.
In the spare time I had, I built a quadcopter and a CNC router and helped 3061 run an outreach program building quads with middleschoolers. I got to help 3 teams - 5125 , 4979, and 3061- with preseason training.
After I left that internship, I learned the basics of web design and applied to internships for this coming summer before FRC season started.
During the season I wasn't able to mentor 5125 because they're an hour away, but managed to help out with 4979 and 3061. I got to go to rock city with 3061 and midwest with both teams.
Due to a connection I made at Olin I flew out to california for a few days to game announce the ventura regional. I met MC blair and had dinner with Woodie flowers (He's AWESOME!)
This summer I'll be at JPL working on a 100 meter occulting disk in space.

None of that would have happened if I hadn't taken a gap year. You also get time to think and gain an intangible perspective. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

http://blogs.olin.edu/olinformer/ has a lot of blog posts by myself and fellow gappies talking about our years. Please feel free to PM me or find me on facebook (Arpan Rau) if you have any questions.

For those you that are attending Virginia Tech next year or are interested in the school, feel free to private message me with any questions you might have. There are an incredible number of clubs and design teams include the TREC lab, the Unmanned Systems Lab, DREAMS lab, and a whole building dedicated to undergraduate research projects. Additionally, Tech has the largest engineering residence hall in the nation and the only one with a machine shop in the building.

Looking forward to meeting other FIRSTers at WPI!! Is it common for freshman (or WPI students in general) to mentor on 190? They seem like an awesome team.
