roboRIO shipped today
I got an email today, 15 minutes before the FirstChoice ordering closed, that our roboRIO and ancillary parts shipped today.

Re: roboRIO shipped today
Mine left Kokomo yesterday.
It arrives here on Friday :-) |

Based on social media posts, I understand they got shipments of roboRIOs, but not the PDP, PCM, or VRM. |
Re: roboRIO shipped today
I just got ours. They appear to need imaging. I can get to a configuration website that says something like "safe mode: (no software installed)" There is button to upload a *.cfg firmware image. no ssh or telnet or ftp.

Re: roboRIO shipped today
I got a ship notification yesterday. The other components are from Cross the Road so it make sense that they have a different ship date.
Unfortunately, mere mortals are probably going to have to wait for kick off to get the 1s & 0s to make it work. :( |
Re: roboRIO shipped today
Does anyone know a valid username+password combo? I got the ssh server started on ours, but can't seem to find a valid login.
|
Re: roboRIO shipped today
I'd imagine admin/<blank> should be the default.

Re: roboRIO shipped today
check out our beta test website for some quick answers to some of the RoboRio related questions.
http://controls.team2168.org Its still in development, but has a lot of useful information none the less. As for the image and firmware. That will be provided when you get the FIRST software. As for now, if you get the safemode, no software message, that means it just has a firmware loaded, and the safemode is a clean default system for debugging purposes. you can still ssh into the safemode, and all periperials (Ethernet, USB etc. should still work (USB device port driver are on the NI software). Login should be: admin with blank password (just hit enter) hope this helps. |
Re: roboRIO shipped today
Correction: You have to check "Enable secure shell server (sshd)" to get ssh access. I missed that.

Re: roboRIO shipped today
Ours just shipped today also.
When we get it, where do we get to software to start developing for it? Does any distribution media ship with the roboRIO? Will the previously restricted beta software like the roboRIO Eclipse environment be available for download? |
Re: roboRIO shipped today
The FRC software will be released at Kickoff.
It is still under Beta testing at the moment. |

Re: roboRIO shipped today
Just a note to everyone. The account your program runs in is not ADMIN. LabView will run in LVUSER. I'll have to check to see what C++/Java run in. Please remember LVUSER is a standard user account and ADMIN has root/elevated privileges.

Re: roboRIO shipped today
So what's the point in letting us order this early?
We were hoping to set this up and at least load a simple drive program on a spare chassis to get some experience before kickoff. |

It may also be convenient for teams to have the hardware in hand on kick-off instead of waiting for shipping after kick-off. Perhaps work with a beta team to gain experience before kick-off. That is part of their mission. |

Even without the ability to do much with them, getting them in hands and paid for well before season is nice. |

I'm still kind of in disbelief...can we really do nothing with it until kickoff? |

You can ssh into it and play around with the OS and filesystem. You can devise and test out 3d-printable accessories. You just won't be able to run a robot with it until you get the development software in the Kit of Parts. |
Re: roboRIO shipped today
If you let me borrow your time machine, there are various ways to fix this. But mine is on the fritz.

You get the time machine or the week expander. But not both. :) I am a little disappointed not to get the software, but the more I think about the more I understand the logic. Releasing it without the support structure in place would do more harm than good. The support structure should be eating, getting lots of rest, for when kick off comes... Anyway we are going to have the new stuff built up on an old robot so when kick off comes, the programmers can get right to work. It will keep them from getting underfoot. I am starting to like this plan. :] |

Also, the biggest benefit for us and National Instruments to allow advance orders is to accurately determine the number of extra units produced in addition to the units given to the teams in the kits. We really had no idea how many extra units would be purchased as extras, so allowing advance sales helped us determine that number. Andy B. |

Sorry, couldn't help myself. I'm not associated with an FRC team this year, but am very glad that the RoboRIO hardware is out in the wild well before kickoff. I've had some idea for accessories that I've been meaning to test out... |
Re: roboRIO shipped today
The people that decide when the roboRIO ships and the people that decide when the software is available are not the same people.

Re: roboRIO shipped today
We got ours this weekend as well. I, too, was disappointed about not getting the software tools, but we knew when we ordered it we wouldn't get them until kickoff.
This controller is very slick. It will be much easier to work with mechanically than the cRIO. I can't speak to the software yet, though. It will be nice to work with a dedicated control system like the old IFI controller again. |
