Using area of a sketch in a global variable

Does anyone know how to measure the area of selected contours in a sketch so that they can be referenced later on in a global variable? I need it to be a dynamic measurement that changes with the size of the part.

Manually determine the formula for the area, and use it to drive the global variable?
