"Water Game" Posts

After reading this post, I decided to see for myself how quickly the infamous water game is usually brought up in a thread. To do so, I sorted through the 90 most recent threads (first 3 pages) in the Rumor Mill forum, excluding spam posts, and collected some data. This includes posts as of about 11:00PM EST 12/09/14. A relevancy measure was necessary since some threads are not about game hints, predictions, etc. per say. This was subject to my opinion. Also, I might have missed some posts. The results are as reliable as I and CTRL+F combined are. So here are the numbers:

Number of threads relevant to game hints, predictions, etc.: 62
Relevant threads that mention a water game: 46 (74%)

Number of irrelevant threads: 28
Irrelevant threads that mention a water game: 3 (11%)

For relevant threads:
Mean number of posts until a water game is mentioned: 13.98
Median number of posts until a water game is mentioned: 5

Considering the number of posts in a thread lets us see relatively how far in the first water game post occurs. A water game post occurs, on average, 24% of the way into a thread. The median "depth" of a water game post is 6% into a thread.

Cool.

Of course, the speculation of a water game is fun, mostly because it is so utterly absurd. Not the idea of robotics in water, but the idea of FRC sponsoring a game where robots interact closely with uncontained water.

So, anytime some smart@bb wants to be funny, they just call 'water game'.

Ha. Ha.

Compare this to the speculation surrounding game hints: Surely the hints offer entertainment and - particularly for those 'in the know' - the feeding frenzy surrounding it is a never-ending source of bemusement. Nevertheless, even if the first post got it absolutely accurate, how would you know it was correct, until kickoff?

Water game? Might as well call Moon or Mars game, just as likely in my lifetime.

Those figures are lower than I expected. Normally somebody would say it like the second post in the thread.

and there's another (bigger) movie about the same story, opening Jan 16th.

Some of us take water game seriously :)

You mean like in 2009? Funny, I don't remember there being an FRC game that year...

I vaguely remember a few people standing around playing basketball, though...

Honestly, I think water game would be kinda cool. Over the past few years it's sorta all been the same premise and it would be great if FIRST could be a tad more creative.

My question:
How did the water game meme start?
Also why does everyone hate Lunacy so much?

I've seen Lunacy, not well I was part of an FRC team, but all I can say is that it is pure lunacy that a game such as Lunacy was even crafted.

I like Lunacy. We made a pretty good robot that year, too. It was fun.
