Best mechanisms
CD community:
I am working on a project and I need to compile a list of good/excellent examples of different mechanisms. I am looking specifically at individual mechanisms, not necessarily whole robots. For example: in 2007 The Pink Team 233 had a great arm for handling inner tubes. It pivoted about the center of the chassis, telescoped and had a "C" shaped claw with rollers at the ends. Rollers were individually operated so the inner tube could be pivoted about the hold point. If you can reach in your collective memory and provide a description (or even better a picture of video) I would appreciate it. It does not matter how far back you have to go, a good mechanism is a good mechanism. Thanks in advance. |

Best mechanisms. Also, for FRC examples: -254's PTO in 2010 and 2013 -148's climber in 2013 -2451's cim-in-wheel swerve last year |
Re: Best mechanisms
To just give a few:
-148's lifting mechanism from 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XECmOwmYiu8 -148's/217's nono drive from 2010: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hTyXQUgYLE -1114's climber from 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMBTmfBnjsc#t=93 -67's accurate, quick, and reliable shooter from 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uubn20uxJQk -217's ball storage mechanism from 2009: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaKOwG9d82w |
Re: Best mechanisms
Here's a list of my favorites. I've tried to include mechanisms with pictures/videos you should be able to find by searching CD/youtube/blue alliance.
2014 118's Spring Puncher pullback/launcher 118's Shooter rotation lock/preset thing 2013 1334's Climber- didn't have to wait for hooks to reach up to grab the bar 254's Climber and gearbox- ridiculously compact/light 118's Climber - didn't work so well in practice, but a really cool idea 2012 Bridge "stingers" to help balance 16's catapult 2011 233's typical chain driven telescoping arm 148's four-bar linkage 2010 67's robot lift - lifted using only stored energy after end of match 254/33/148/1114's lift - curl up 148's shooter with cam 359's (??) pneumatic wheel climber (kind of like 118 2013) 469's entire robot 2008 1114's puncher/winch and arm. Their whole robot was amazing that year 148's swerve 118's linked swerve with rotating turret (like their 2007/2005 robots) |

Re: Best mechanisms
I thought Jared's list was pretty good so I linked some media:

Rolling Grabbers.

Re: Best mechanisms
2014 254's clapper popper/pinniped. A very simple mechanism that just worked. It aided as the mechanism to send the ball into the flywheel as well as pushing the ball out of the front or back of the robot for assists or low goal scoring.

Thanks folks, this is exactly what i was looking for.

Re: Best mechanisms
2014-254 wheeled shooter due to it high release point and double collectors
2013 others have given good examples. I would add floor pickups from that year (33, 469, 987, 2054, a few others) 2012, 67 collector bridge adjuster arm. Built in could only collect 3 balls thus no penalty. 2011-the roller collector with release jaw. There were several examples, but this was by far the best tube gather and release mechanism. 2010 pincher gripper. It was a game changer. 2009-1114 elevating ball sorter was very cool and prevented jams. 2008-1114 ball collector puncher. Though even better refinements of that design came back for 2014. |
Re: Best mechanisms
Great mechanisms here...
I can go a little further back... 1999 - our team, 157, had what we called an "outrigger" system that allowed us to climb onto the rolling puck without issue (for the most part, lookin at you 45 :D ). I can get some pictures of it for you at our next meeting. You can see video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0CDop_IwW8 (vid credit to Andy Baker) 2004 - I believe both 190 (Gompei) and 126 (Gael Force) had pretty awesome climbing mechanisms. 190's was simple yet effective, they could block the bar so it made it difficult to latch on. 126 could reach up and climb from the floor without having to climb the steps. 2002 - How we failed to mention 71 and their crazy but superb walking mechanism along with their ability to grab all 3 goals...if you haven't seen video of this yet, you are missing out... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eKvva_ZCHw I'll try to recall more... |

Here is the thunderchicken's 2002 continuously variable transmission, which was pretty cool |
Re: Best mechanisms
I personally was a huge fan of the 217 and 330 PVC claws from 2008.
