What have the game rules encryption passwords been for the past few years?

This is just out of curiosity.

Normally an 4lph4-numer1c, mUlti-CAse combo that has something to do with the game... Ultimate Ascent was 'saucersflyrobotsclimb' but with variations.

See, only an idiot would put their password as "password123", but once you add the 4 it's a whole new tier of encryption. It'd take any espionage agency /YEARS/ to unlock the treasures that lay behind such a key phrase.

Not quite. You've GOT to go to 6, because 1-2-3-4-5 is the kind of thing an idiot would use for his luggage.

So as soon as Frank says Hawaiian pizzas are bad everyone loves them. I wonder if when frank says not to jump off the Empire State Building there will be a spike in the number of dead bodies found at its foot.

Well that escalated quickly.

Re: What have the game rules encryption passwords been for the past few years?

One thing I have noticed. As Computer processing speeds have gotten faster, the lead time that the encrypted file is out there has shortened.
Though I have never attempted to hack the password, I have a very good understanding of process and the time that it would take to hack one of the last five passowrds.

I have the feeling (IMHO) that the GDC runs the password through a good algorithm, once hacked, they add 10-12 hrs to determine the release of the encrypted file. Basically, the math is you can't decrypt the file before kick off, they've tested and ensured that.

Have fun and just wait for the password on the 3rd. It will save you from headaches.

But the main reason they do this, as most of us know, is to keep their server from crashing on kick-off. If we have the file downloaded, we don't have to access the server, just decrypt. Faster, Easier, done.

How long was that one up on the screen during kickoff? About 5 seconds?

Re: What have the game rules encryption passwords been for the past few years?

I don't know, but it was up long enough for me to take a picture of it. I brought a camera just for that reason.

Re: What have the game rules encryption passwords been for the past few years?

I remember that year. I was standing on the field, turned to look up at the screen, and thought -- I better get a picture of that. It did stay up for a long while.

I was wondering, though...what would happen if someone managed to decrypt it with significant enough lead time to give them an advantage? Even a couple extra days before kickoff would make a difference, so what would FIRST do? Would they disqualify the team?

Then that person should apply to the CIA, FBI, and NSA. Immediately. With that all the documentation of the decryption. Let those three figure out who gets first crack at employing the person.

And whether FIRST would DQ the team... Nobody's ever done it. Therefore, there is no precedent. However, I would anticipate both some form of penalty (bag 2 days earlier?) and some form of change in later seasons to prevent it from happening again.

Now Frank is going to change it!!!

Well it looks like we won't even have worry about it getting cracked as FIRST is not going to post the game manual but rather have it as an APP or did I miss read something?

A similar solution has been used by FIRST in previous years; i would still expect a downloadable pdf before kickoff this year to lessen their servers being overwhelmed once the game has been released.

I guess I don't remember 2007 -- here's my picture from the 2006 Kickoff. It got even longer.

It is also available in PDF form. From this blog post:

Quote:

For now, there are two ways you can get the 2015 Administrative Manual, by downloading the PDF or by downloading the “FIRST Official” app available on both iOS and Android.
It's also worth noting that we have had an app for the last two years as well (maybe longer). The first year it was bad, last year it was a little better. They keep changing the developer, and it appears that's what they've done again this year.
