New info on 2016 Game
First makes a game that requires robots to pick up pool noodles to represent "litter". But litter is very rarely in the shape of pool noodles.
So why pool noodles? Well, say some pool company sponsors First. This company needs some way to optimize the cleaning of pool noodles from its pools. Therefore, it asks First to make pool noodles as a game element in 2015. But now, First has a pool company sponsoring it. What's in pools I ask? Water. Water is in pools. TL;DR Water game 2016 confirmed. -P.N. Larry #livinglikelarry |

Wait a second! Look at it! "Change is Coming.
If you rearrange the letters, remove a few, add a few more and stick the square root of 4,064,256 on the end you get: "Water Game Confirmed 2016!" Genius! |
Re: New info on 2016 Game
I would really prefer to see a flying game (drones) before FIRST attempted to do a water based one. I also think that a flying game is more likely, as they are in the news right now due to their popularity and use by Domino's and Amazon. Matter of fact, I figure that it will be a game within the decade.

Water game > drone game and that's coming from someone who has built his own drone.

The 2016 game will be synchronized dancing robots:
http://mashable.com/2015/01/20/human...s-dance-tokyo/ A future water version, synchronized swimming robots, is anticipated shortly therafter. Yet to be determined is whether there will be a 3 judge panel, similar to Dancing With the Stars, or an 11 judge panel, similar to Olympic scoring. |

Re: New info on 2016 Game
It is a forgotten fact that a water game was actually played by accident in the Summer of 2000(?) at JPL. An outdoor scrimmage was held. Though it hadn't rained on that date in Pasadena in 120 years of recorded history, the sky opened up and soaked the carpet. There actually were puddles. The robots were spraying rooster tails that went up at least 10 feet. A couple shorted out. Don't remember who was there, but I'm pretty sure the Beach Bots were the hosts.
It was spectacular. In 2001 or 2002 Nats at Epcot a thunderstorm flooded some of the tents where the pits were, causing a bit of a problem as the AC power was under water for a while. The FOPs stayed dry though. Sorry for these reminiscences - but it is throwback Thursday! |
Re: New info on 2016 Game
At the new Woodhaven District Event, in order to get your robot between the pits and the field, you have to walk next to the school's pool (in the same room as the pool).
Water game confirmed??? |
Re: New info on 2016 Game
As far as I know, regional are held at colleges and other venues where pools are either present, or the venue is large enough to set one up. Not to mention that First built a new field in St. Louis this year...
Perhaps with aquatic capabilities? #WaterGame2016 |
Re: New info on 2016 Game
Has anyone considered that we might be in an Ender's Game scenario?
Considering we found a salty ocean on Ganymede, I expect us to go to war with it's inhabitants soon. |
Re: New info on 2016 Game
New in 2016:
Teams will build robots controlled by regional's volunteers, each team submits a commander (like ender) to wage all out warfare on a game surface similar to lunacy... but with icy water like ganymede! |
Re: New info on 2016 Game
I also think there would be a flying game before a water game; however, I think that the robot wouldn't be a drone but rather an end piece would. Like in Lunancy.

Re: New info on 2016 Game
Water games are already old news elsewhere.
http://www.marinetech.org/rov-competition/ It is hard to say if some people are actually serious about this but the strain of building a robot plus making it waterproof would be too much for some teams, even though it has been done elsewhere. Also, just imagine the nightmare of having a water arena for regionals, there are so many accidents there just waiting to happen... |

Honestly, I doubt it willl be water, ever year people say it will be a water game, even when the preview for the new George Lopez movie about the water game people thought it was water. If I had to guess, it will be something like a sport, maybe competitive lumber-jacking?

Re: New info on 2016 Game
Here's my take on the current situation.
What was one of the game pieces this year? Pool noodles. What were they doing? Flying around the feild. What is the primary material used to create the bumpers? Pool noodles... So essentially this year, the robot bumpers were flying around the feild, and not being in the robot. What does this mean? To compensate for the flying bumpers in 2015, in 2016 there MUST be flying robots. :P |
Re: New info on 2016 Game
Hey guys, I see a lot of people thinking a flying game would be cool. The thing is, college kids are already competing with flying robots and FIRST is debating annexing the program.

Re: New info on 2016 Game
2016 is the 100th running of the Indy 500. Maybe some sort of 3 on 3 race over obstacles and/or manipulating pieces. Time penalties for avoiding obstacles or missing pieces. All teams in alliance get same score like Recycle Rush. Maybe add a pit stop for the human player to change a battery or a wheel. End game is a series of donuts.
