Disk brakes
 

My team is planning on using a disk brake on our elevator system. We have standardized on 1/2 in hex stock for any type of shaft. The problem is that i can not find any disk brakes that use 1/2 in hex. How have other teams used disk brakes in the past?

We used a disc brake last year on our shooter.

No you won't find them in hex profiles.

We made our own aluminum disc last year that doubled as the spool for our cable/winch assembly. You can make your own disc and bolt it to a versa hub.

An aluminum plate sprocket on a Versa-hub would do for a rotor in a pinch.

Funny, I have been having a hard time finding bike wheels with 1/2" hex too...

The sprocket idea has to be the most cots friendly solution.

That is actually a great idea. They fit the profile perfectly.
They sure would be better than what we can cnc plasma.

I know that 948 had an arm with brakes on it. This was a while ago though, maybe 2005. I think they did something based on bicycle brakes.

We did this on our shooter last year and it worked great, just don't paint the sprocket without masking the rotor area.

That is what we are planning to do. Use a disk brake caliper from a bike and now a plate sprocket to keep our elevator stationary.

Here are a couple of views of how we used a disk brake for our 2011 winch controlling the should joint of the our scoring arm. We used brake cable and short stroke pneumatic to actuate it. It is all mounted on an AndyMark toughbox.
