We store ours upside down when not in use because of this

Is this a shared build space, or did you do that intentionally?

Not sure if problem, or grander scale goal...

Does that sign say aluminum only? Was this intentional?

We work in a shared community build space so there are others who work there that don't know about our competition's game this year

I'd suggest taping a piece of paper inside the lid (to cover the hole) and writing "NOT FOR TRASH! - FIRST Robotics Game Piece" on there. 1923 has their build space to themselves and we still have students accidentally put empty water bottles in our game piece. It's just instinct - see the closest can, put your trash/recycling in it. Having a visual reminder will help people.

Wow, your students actually put the empties in the containers?
Sometimes after a long build day, we spend time collecting the empties (or half-drank waters) from around the shop.
Or even worse.. find them in the TRASH and not in the returnable bin.
We do allot of fundraising (as I'm sure you all do), and bottle drives are one of our biggest! And to see a 5 cent bottle in the trash makes me cringe, and so we say something like "Hey Students, have you NOT been at a BERT bottle drive??!!"

(lol)

It's not the students that are the issue, the robotics build space we work at is a community workspace that the public sometimes uses, so we in our infinite lazydom simply left our recycling container on the floor next to the aluminum can recycling bin and came in the next day to see that someone had dumped all of the aluminum cans in the previous bin into our bin and added a sign saying that it was for aluminum recycling. So it's not an issue with preventing anyone from doing so, if anything it is our own fault this happened, but we just thought it was funny and wanted to share it with the FIRST community!
