Imaging a non-classmate

Our classmate was lost when our school was doing some renovations, so we are going to use a windows 7 laptop as our drive computer. We were going through the Getting Started With 2015 Control System, and in the Imaging Your Classmate section https://wpilib.screenstepslive.com/s...image-download one of the prerequisites is a "E09, E11, E12, E14, or NL4 Classmate computer". However, I have seen other teams using non-classmates as their main computer.

So would it work to just image our Windows 7 laptop? Because the E12 Classmate was the latest with Windows 7, we were thinking that we should just follow the directions and image it with the E12 image. Would that work? Or do we need to do something special in order to image our laptop?

Thanks,

Adam

Re: Imaging a non-classmate

You can install the Driver Station on Windows machines - this is probably what you saw other teams using. The Classmate image is only supposed to be used on Classmate computers AFAIK.

You can find more information about installing the driver station on this WPILib ScreenSteps Live page - It's called the "update" but installs Driver Station and other things.

Don't image a non-Classmate. (Actually, if it's running okay, don't image a Classmate either.) Just install the Driver Station.

Unfortunately, our laptop was imaged yesterday. It did log on to the windows screen, and I don't remember anyone reporting problems. What kind of problems would imaging cause? Will it still work? If not, could we just do a system restore?

Re: Imaging a non-classmate

Using a Classmate image on a different PC or even a different model Classmate can end up with incorrect or missing drivers for the specific hardware.
For instance, the wrong video driver, so you can't get the full resolution your screen is capable of.
