Hello Colleagues,

A question that arose in one of our meetings today was whether teams could ship the robot sideways in the crate. We were not certain how to answer this. Any information on this matter would be most appreciated. Kind regards ...

are you talking about shipping for championship? if so then yes as long as it fits in the required box size. correct me if iim wrong?

There are no rules concerning the robots orientation inside the create while shipping. That said, you'll want to make sure the robot is stable and well supported, so you show up with a functioning robot and not a pile of twisted scrap!

Footprint has to be 4' x4' by 70" high max

The key with this size is this height includes 4 inch risers on the bottom of the crate for a forklift to be able to lift it. Then you add about 2 inches to that and you are left with 64 inches. So teams just want to make sure their robot is shorter then that or can be taken apart in some way to fit.

Luckily you can bag your robot in two bags this year.

You can put your robot in essentially however you want to as long as it fits in the crate size.

One thing I would say though is to make sure that it will be stable when you pack it. Putting it on its side may make it more likely to tip and have things bang together. As long as you do it right though, should be fine.

On a similar note, can a team meet the transport size requirement (28" X 42" X 78") by turning the robot on its side? I am anticipating future concerns after we complete the building of the robot. Thanks, again, for your help !

There's no orientation requirement for the robot during transport configuration, so long as all of your parts fit into said box and can be assembled within ~60 seconds by the 4 members of your driveteam.

Please note that the TRANSPORT CONFIGURATION listed in R3 B specify length, width, and height. If part of your robot is 78", that part needs to be oriented vertically while transporting the robot - you can't lay it down in the cart so you have a short, 78" long robot moving through the pits. In other words, the robot needs to stand upright while transporting, not laying flat on a stretcher.

The practical implications for this mean that teams with extremely tall robots that have to pass through doorways need to build carts that allow them to do so, or they need to remove the robot from the cart every doorway they encounter in order to fit it through. At the 10,000 Lakes regional, for example, there are 7 doorways between the pit and the field, one of which is on a ramp. Teams with tall robots and carts more than a few inches tall will need to remove the robot from the cart 7 times in each round trip in order to fit through the doorways, and the doorway on the ramp may pose unique challenges even when a robot is off the cart.
