2015 Greater Kansas City Regional

The Greater Kansas City Regional continues to be a popular event, filling their 39 open slots faster than usual this year. Looking forward to many more teams joining the party, including more than a dozen teams (*see spoiler) who normally play in KC but have yet to register for their first event.

Last year the venue was "cozy" in the stands. With so many Kansas City based teams participating there was a lot of local spectator support. I've heard the committee has some great plans to remedy that situation as well as upgrade the webcast. Looking forward to seeing the improvements to our home town regional.

In 2014 Kansas City hosted:
  • 3 Teams who won an RCA (1939, 1986 & 3528)
  • 3 Teams who won an EI (932, 1730, and 3928), and
  • 5 teams who played in the semi-finals in their divison at champs. (118, 1730, 1806, 1986, and 3928).
Much of that talent is coming back again this year along with a host of other great teams. This has traditionally been one of the earliest events where wild cards are also up for grabs. It's going to be great. Looking forward to volunteering at this event.

1847 and 3485 are now registered for GKC. Those are currently the only two teams with confirmed lists that were previously unconfirmed on your list.

We've had 3 teams came off the wait-list since this thread started, bringing us up to 42. 1737 was the other one. I'm confident our regional leadership is tracking down the other local teams and helping them through the process. Kansas City has a great track record for retaining teams.

It seems like with 1986, 118, 3928, and 3612 gone, GKC will be slightly less competitive than last year, but you never know. Maybe some 2014 rookies will fill their shoes. I am particularly interested in seeing 5098 and 5013 in their second year.

Rookie Team 5476, Y Bridge 4H Robotics from Galena, MO is thrilled to be able to attend GKC as our 1st FIRST regional!

After 2 years out of the game, I look forward to bringing a new bunch of kids & parents into the FIRST community.

The KC regional teams and independent volunteers made my experience with Team 3784 four years ago so amazing that I know members of 5476 will feel welcome no matter what happens.

Thank you all for working so hard to make GKC happen.

2015 Greater Kansas City Regional

The 2015 Greater Kansas City Regional is now only 1 build season away from being in the middle of Qualifying Matches! Returning to the same location as last year (MCC Business and Technology Campus), it promises to be yet another highly competitive GKC event!

Entry List as of 1/30/2015 53 Teams, 0 Open Capacity:
  • 937
  • 938
  • 1288
  • 1710
  • 1723

  • 1825
  • 1827
  • 1847
  • 1939
  • 1982
  • 1984
  • 1987
  • 1994
  • 1997
  • 2001
  • 2164

  • 2335
  • 2345

  • 2560
  • 2874
  • 3485
  • 3528

  • 4455
  • 4522
  • 4646
  • 4809
  • 4959
  • 5013
  • 5082
  • 5098
  • 5119
  • 5126
  • 5141
  • 5268
  • 5476 **Rookie**

Notes:
  • Tri-State Throwdown: The entry list features a myriad of teams from both Missouri and Kansas, and a lone Iowan entry of team 4646.
  • Up For Grabs: Of the 2014 Regional Winners, only 1723 will be returning to the event this year. Both 118 and more surprisingly 1986 have elected to compete elsewhere in 2015. Word from Team Titanium is that many members from their team will be present and/or volunteering at the event regardless of their non-entry.
  • All Tied Up: "What team has won the most Greater Kansas City Regionals?" Is currently a trick question, as with back-to-back-to-back victories Team 1986(2012,2013,2014) has found themselves in a tie with team 1806(2008,2009,2013) for the most GKC Regional Wins.
  • Relatively Fresh Blood: While there may only be 1 rookie team attending this year, there will be 8 teams who are entering their sophomore seasons in FRC at the event.
  • Time for a breakthrough?: No team entered in the Greater Kansas City Regional in 2014 made it past devisional Semis at Champs last year.
After Ranking 3rd on Galileo, 1730's dreams of Einstein were dashed by the 2 seed in a semifinals rubber match.
118's hopes also met their demise in the semifinals, this time on the Curie field, losing a tiebreaker with the eventual World Champion alliance.
1986 and 1806 also lost a decisive match in the semifinals. This time, it was to the eventual Einstein finalists from Galileo, after having to sub in 3928 due to a failed drive gear on the Team Titanium entry.
While I don't have any hard stats for Kansas and Iowa at the moment, the success rate for teams from Missouri getting to Einstein is much like the success rate for teams with Mecanum drive wheels getting to Einstein (0%). Though, of course many teams are working tirelessly trying to fix that.

Re: 2015 Greater Kansas City Regional

Well then, what a regional this was. A very long set of congratulations to go around after such an amazing event.

Congratulations to 1810, Mary Beth Mattingly, on becoming the 2015 Greater KC Woodie Flowers Finalist Award Winner!

Congratulations to Alliance 1700, or as I heard that they dubbed themselves, Team 10 Year. 1785, 1723, and 1710 What an incredible finals y'all put on, and I'm still trying to figure out how such an amazing alliance managed to be put together! Consistently putting up over a 100 points throughout all of the Playoffs is no small feat, yet your alliance made it look like an art form. Your spots at Championships were well earned, and I look forward to seeing each of your teams in St. Louis. (P.S, the "tradition" of a team from the previous winning alliance winning the next year is kept alive. 1710 and 1785, looks like it's up to you two to win GKC next year!)

Congratulations to the Finalists, 1730 1806 and 1777. You were a fearsome alliance and made incredibly tall stacks with such grace and ease. The Finals matches were amazing matches and the rate that the score flipped between favoring the Red Alliance and Blue Alliance was something I hadn't seen before. Incredible matches and incredible robots.

To the #3 Seeded Alliance:
2410 You all never fail to impress me year in and year out. You never dropped out of the top 10 all competition, and put on one of the most amazing years we've ever had. It's incredible to think that just 2 years ago, we had won the unofficial "Machine Shop Award" for excessive use of the machine shop, and today you won a Motorola Quality Award. I'm incredibly proud to continue to go to competitions wearing my Silver Hat and proclaim that I am a Metal Mustang.
1987 What an incredible robot. Such a complex design, yet executed with the simplicity that is always found within the robots that you all design. It's unfortunate that we couldn't continue on wards with your team. Seeing the robot create the stacks with such fluid motion was inspiring. Good luck at Buckeye! (By the way, congratulations Austin Ahern on becoming a Dean's List Finalist!)
2357 You were a steal in Alliance Selections! Your team did incredible during the playoffs, and I suspect that your team is going to do big things in the future. I met your head mentor during the Mentor Parade, and combined with the level of competitiveness that you brought to our Alliance, your team will be a force to be reckoned with.

1710 Congratulations on a well deserved Chairman's Award. Your team never fails to impress me each year with the improvement you make to your already incredible program. Good luck on chasing down the Championship Chairman's Award in St. Louis.

All in all, congratulations to everyone who won an award this year, and to all of the teams that competed at the Greater Kansas City Regional! For two years I've been coming back after graduating, and I always look forward to this regional! Good luck to anyone with regionals coming up, and I hope to see you in St. Louis for Championships this year!

Wouldn't the tradition of returning winners also be satisfied if 1723 won again? :)

Hats off to the Finalists, 1730, 1806, and 1777. You had some amazing robots, and I fully expected to take home red ribbons instead of blue. I'm very glad all Finalists will be making the trip to St. Louis; you deserve it. All six teams were "Kaufmann babies" that started in 2006. It's gratifying to see how far we've come. (It took some of us longer than others...)

See you in St. Looey!

I really have to give it up for the head scouts on both 1785 and 1723; they took a gamble picking a 43rd seed (1710). It's obvious that they had done their homework. Thanks for the great experience!

GKC was a great event this year. We (1825) were up and down the rankings all day. We say a huge thank you to Team scream (4522) for drafting us so early, they knew we were having some problems with our robot and picked us anyway. Even though it's a little disappointing that our robot never worked at full capacity until the last match of semi's it was still a great event.
Also, a HUGE congratulation to 1785, 1723, and 1710. When I saw the alliance you built I didn't think it would be that successful. You guys must have done much better scouting than our team though because you were a great team.
(Also, it was a little stressful when we had two field faults called in the same match, then a field timeout, and then our alliance timeout, and we got back from fixing our robot with basically no time to spare.)

Not sure where video is stored right now, but believe me, as one of our two drivers, both of which we're focused on only our robot in the final matches, I am looking to get my hands on some event footage. Ill make sure that information is posted when we know.

Yes, huge shoutout to 1785 and 1723 for picking all the way down to the 43rd seed. Just goes to show how ranking isn't always the best indicator. Our teams fit together so well. It was an honor to play with 1730, 1806, and 1777, and we're glad that you all will be at champs as well. See you there!

Given that ONW's team won the Regional Chairman's Award, I would hazard a guess as to say that they had the foresight to not allow students that were't of the best of health attend the event.

Funny you should bring this up actually. According to what they are saying, those who had been "diagnosed", for lack of a better term, are not able to transmit their virus. It's not yet active.
Also, I am fairly certain that none of the students that were brought to the regional were a part of the initial group of 300 that were tested.

So there shouldn't be anything to be concerned about...
